1/25 Revell Ford Del Rio Ranch Wagon 2'n'1
niteowl7710 replied to Matt T.'s topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
OMIGHERD can we please get a Moderator Clean-Up on Aisle 17-20? Geebus guys...I've said before that people who don't belong to this forum, but read it in lurk mode think this place is the laughing stock of the hobby. I was roundly flame warred with "Who cares what they think?!?!?!" But really, this "gotta have the last word" crud is beyond the pale this time. For all the bickering over the Mustang that shall not be named, it was never a geopolitical religious debate with personal flaming. I do find it deliciously ironic that those of us who were branded "trouble makers" and whatnot stayed out of the most recent Revell kit gaffes leaving the pointing out of said gaffes to people more intimately familiar with the subject matter, but I see it's still the same half dozen or so members of the Universal Revell Defense Brigade doing all the running off at the mouth and pot stirring. Comforting that the more things change, the more they stay the same I guess. I can't even imagine what this must look like to someone who's never been to this forum before, or someone who visits infrequently. Do you guys not care about your reputations or is being right in your own fantasy-land more important? -
You can thank The General for that. This thing has been done since early Fall and been parked in licensing purgatory ever since.

That shrink wrap is what makes the cost go from $28.68 to $71.99. Yeah THAT'S the ticket! -
The next big hobby show in Japan is in Shizuoka in mid-May. That oughta be when Revell kicks out a flyer for the 3Q too. Beyond that Revell is still missing a couple of 4Q 2014 kits let alone the 1Q stuff (other than reissues) with that '29 Ford being the big deal for the "summer". I doubt Moebius is going to announce anything until they unclog the pipeline, which based on their FB page and reports of people getting their '53 Smoothside Rollup Door trailer kit shipped should finally dribble out 4 kits by June. Round2 has fallen asleep at the switch so to speak , since iHobby they haven't produced any further fliers for 2Q, and only the AMT part of their website is actually updated to reflect it's 2015. April kits are supposed to be the '53 Vette, '64 Impala and a non-Art box version of the Piranha "Spy" car.

FedEx is done by weight AND volume. So what might have been considered heavy for EMS slotted into a certain dimensional box size at FedEx. If you play with the shipping screen (and you'll need about 18-20 model kits *cough*) you can add them one at a time and watch FedEx be REALLY expensive and then SAL and EMS creep up to it - eventually you lose the ability to SAL after 3-4 kits and EMS will become more expensive until you hit the next dimensional size and FedEx leaps ahead by about $15 but keep adding more kits and the weight in the EMS box will make it catch up and then pass it again until the next volume price hike. My 24 items are idling out at Memphis after clearing USCBP and will arrive after a short plane flight to Pittsburgh tomorrow morning. The difference between EMS & FedEx was about $3 and working as a Postal Contractor I try to keep my stuff out of the hands of USPS Lockheed-Martin automated sorters whenever fiscally possible... -
They were supposed to have retooled a new three piece stock seat and stock tail lights. Along with added in upgraded tires (pad printed WW and drag slicks), and reproducing the original '67 decal sheet. It's an almost 50 year old model tool, so caveat emptor. I wouldn't expect it to be any worse, or better than any of the other 50ish year old tools they've reintroduced. But unless you stick to a very narrow window of tooling time from say '88-'98 (basically the last days of MPC pre-merger, and the Ertl era) you're gonna get "good ole day" quality models.

Sent mine along with the other 23 things in my Personal Warehouse over to process for FedEx shipping. $87.01 to ship 24 items - 2 P/E sets, 6 sets of decals and 16 kits works out to $3.62 per item and if they get it out tomorrow it'll probably be here by Friday. WORKS FOR ME! -

Yeah you gotta remember you're dealing with a 14 hour time difference (Eastern, do your own math to your own locale) between here and there. While 1999 (Hobby Search) listed it as "In Stock" at what would have been first thing in the morning for us here, it was close of business in Japan. Now it's 0610 in Japan, and the start of business on Tuesday over there. -

I got my Purchase Request from HLJ a few minutes ago (a few minutes before 4pm Eastern), which means so should everyone else who ordered it IMMEDIATELY after I posted the link to it (HLJ does all billing around 4pm Eastern - it's 6am tomorrow morning in Japan right now) - anyone who ordered it in the past few weeks, it will all depend on how much stock from Tamiya HLJ received today as Pre-Orders are filled in a FOFS (First Ordered, First Served) manner. Go check you e-mails guys, you might owe some Yen to Japan! Remember you only have THREE DAYS to make payment. EDIT - Make sure after processing your payment via PayPal you get taken back to HLJ's website (this SHOULD occur automatically) and you receive the message below We successfully received your payment! Thank you for shopping with HobbyLink Japan. You will receive confirmation of your payment shortly. To view the details of your order please log in. If you have any questions please visit our Help Center or email us at questions@hlj.com In a few minutes after that you'll get two more e-mails one saying it's being packed for shipping (if you didn't chose the Personal Warehouse feature) or that it's been added to your Personal Warehouse. Also another that's a receipt from HLJ that they processed your payment via PayPal. -
It is a straight reissue of the existing curbside 928S, the only difference are license plate decals specific to the anime series car.

Yeah it's called being a modeler, or are you just a kit assembler? I mean that is the standard answer for any of the rabid mob of Revell defenders is it not? Beyond that I asked you to provide a list of previous Tamiya kits with opening trunks that would lead to THIS particular trunk not being opened as an "omission". Of course you didn't make that list, but it was also a trick question as Tamiya has NEVER made a kit with an opening trunk (caveat - in 1/24 scale and not something that was an access hole for a motorized kit). I get it, you have an obsession about this car that some might call ridiculous, but also steeping your judgement against something based on the fact that a 50 year old AMT kit had one, so EVERY tooling of this kit must have one is equally ridiculous. With the inclusion of the full engine, the full space frame, and the see-through bottom (if that's your thing) in a kit that's going to cost $27 (which incidentally is a whole NICKEL more than Revell's MSRP on their new kits) who gives two flips if the trunk doesn't open? Heck I'd bet a solid 75% wouldn't care if the gullwing doors didn't open. If you want to fret every last detail might I point you towards Acu Stion who's got a complete detail set coming out that includes P/E, White Metal suspension parts, and even a turned TITANIUM exhaust tip all yours for an extra $123. -

Skip, just out of curiosities sakes I'd like you to list all the other kits that Tamiya has made with opening trunks that would make you inclined to believe THIS car, which has a lower price point than several recent super car kits, would include such a feature - OTHER than your bias towards the subject matter. -
FWIW Aoshima is reissuing the Initial D Series version of the Cappuccino next month, that's a factory stock kit with the addition of a front bumper "cover" like the MOLA one (as the stock bumper is molded to the body) along with racing seats and roll hoops for behind the seats. Pricing is about $15 if you import direct.
-
If you can find one from the mid 90s when American SATCO was Aoshima's distributor they punished their kit with a pound lump of resin that in the right moonlight with sufficient alcohol intake could be considered to resemble a LHD dash from 500 feet. Of course you don't get the other pesky stuff like LHD console/shifter or LHD wipers either.

When do you open your kits?
niteowl7710 replied to chunkypeanutbutter's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The story behind in the store goes to many Revell USA reboxed RevellAG Ferrari kits have usually more than one warped set of parts. The owner over heard me talking to the 2nd shift guy, who is also the model car guy, and insisted the next time I bought one I open it there so he could see. We opened all 6 458 Italias one afternoon, everyone with some level of warpage inside. That was also when I swore off buying reboxed kits, especially the exotics. -
Improved Lighting & Magnification Options?
niteowl7710 replied to nitrojunkie's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
I'm going against the OptiVisor advice and suggest instead the Carson Optical Magnivisor. http://www.amazon.com/Carson-MagniVisor-Head-Worn-Magnifier-CP-60/dp/B007CDJKM2 You have to be careful to get the REAL thing, not the Spanish - Made in China knockoff copy. The lenses are Optical grade, the light is bright and directionally manipulatable. It also detaches and can be used separately. After experiments with OptiVisors I wasn't happy with the total lack of peripheral vision. -

I'm curious as to the borderline paranoia that this little spat between the Union & Management is going to effect the availability of a kit there isn't even a release date on beyond "2Q". Considering the backlog of kits from the 4th and 1st quarter (which again has nothing to do with this problem) I wouldn't hold out hope that the '29 Ford was magically gonna drop out of the skies in April... Moreover someone is ALWAYS threatening a work shutdown at the Port of Long Beach and associated sites. If it's not the Longshoremen, it's the Union representing the Clerks, or it's the Port Drayage Drivers. The United States is in the unique position of having THREE coast lines with deep water ports. Stuff not yet on the water will be routed towards the East or Gulf Coasts, and the increased boat shipping costs will be offset by lower rail costs since those containers will not have to ride cross country to get to where 85% of the population resides. The truckers will lose money, the West Coast railroads (UP & BNSF) will lose money and in a week or two people are gonna force the two sides to be locked in an empty container until they deal with each other since above all principles, MONEY talks. -
When do you open your kits?
niteowl7710 replied to chunkypeanutbutter's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
All kits are inspected, in the store if possible, and ESPECIALLY eBay purchases. I'm dubious of any "vintage" factory sealed kit. Especially in the case of a foreign kit (Japanese which aren't sealed at all, or RevellAG which come with just the little clear circles sealing the end shut). Plus if you don't inspect things, a snafu like this mispacking of the Revell GTi kit with Cabriolet parts might end up being a serious issue 9 months down the line, rather than during yhe "campaign" to resolve the problem. I mean it's an entire BAG of parts, not just one runner... -

SAL is very similar to what anyone here in the U.S. who either served in the Military (or worked for the Government in a foreign country and had an APO/FPO address) or had family who did the same know as SAM - Space Available Mail. SAL/SAM has 0 priority and are never going to be delivered door to door Internationally in 2 days. There's a reason the SAM cutoff for mailing stuff overseas for Christmas is BEFORE Thanksgiving. There is such a thing as Tracked SAL, but you're just gonna watch your box sit around the Airport in Tokyo a lot. -
1/25 Revell '29 Model A Roadster 2'n'1

That would have been great except Moebius didn't have any either. I'm using one hobby shop as an example, however we have 6 of them in town and so I got the Chrysler from another. The reason it "irks" me is that someone says "x is sold out" and I say I know where you can get one - either from me getting it and reimbursing/trading for it or going through another source. Then someone else piles in and claims since THEY can't find it, never mind what I just said, there ARE NO MORE TO BE FOUND ANYWHERE. Note I never said I was irked at people HERE at any point. But if that feel it was directed at you or you need to faux defend the masses here then lace that sucker up and wear it proudly! -
Revell Golf GTi/Cabrio kit issues
niteowl7710 replied to martinfan5's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
An unknown amount GTi kits(there are 5 kits I'm personally aware of belonging to people here and elsewhere) were shipped with the Cabriolet bag of parts runners - stock engine, stock seats, convertible boot, up top, wheels, et al - rather than the GTi one. Someone in Poland wasn't paying attention, but for the record I know of at least 5 GTi kits (my own included) that DID have the correct parts. So not EVERY kit in the Export run was packed wrong. -

It just irks me personally when people have a perception of something that doesn't necessarily match reality. Everyone says the Mustang LX aold well, but my LHS still has the first one he ever put on the shelf still sitting there (his price tags have a date stamp), and the same for the Drag version. Lot of people claim they could never buy any of the Galaxie Limited Chevy kits, but they were available DIRECTLY through Galaxie the entire time until they finally sold out last year. Ironically AFTER the 2nd batch of factory Cudas were run in conjunction with the Sox & Martin Drag car he sold more than a half dozen of them at Christmas time. I also couldn't find a Moebius '56 Chrysler in stock there for like 6 months... regional sales must drive Corporate crazy sometimes. Back to the matter at hand, being the resident Japan "homer" and super car/hyper car/modern car lover...I still have to get one of these. It's too iconic a subject, and I will support Revell in projects I feel deserve my money. -

Actually some of the older and/or oddball tooling (of which a 1/20 van fits into both) were never shipped overseas. An example from Revell would be the recently reissued Nissan Pick-Up. That kit hadn't been run since the merger and being a SnapTite kit with "limited appeal" the tooling was never shipped to China. It says "Molded in the USA" right on the box. Granted the box was made in China and the decals in Italy, but that's the Global Supply Chain. -
