Model A Wrecker (Weathered)
SpreadAxle replied to RyanSilva's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Very good weathering skills. good work -
Considering all that's been done to it, the price isn't too horrible. nice tractor there. Of course, I love anything with an N14. As of OCT 2002, no more N14s have beeen made. Shame, because the basic design of that engine proved itself for decades. The older Cummins engines( like in the AMT kits) used the same 855 cid block same basic heads as the N14. The N14 was Air to air aftercooled and electronically controlled, but minus some very small things, no different than an NTC 350, or NTC 400, or 444 or any of their popular older models. All good things come to an end I guess. I like the ISX, but I need to turn this one up. Not much, uh, you know, guts. Thanks for looking though. This truck is my mobile work bench. lol. Almost all items on the passenger side of the sleeper relate to building model trucks. I will have those pix for reference soon. AMT's kit represents an 1990-1994 model.

i miss this truck. It just needed a little TLC. It went 1.1 million miles without an overhaul, and still ran strong when I sold it. I was starting to do some rebuilding already, but I have always liked Kenworths, and this T600 seemed like a good deal. Until 2 1/2 months after I bought it. I will be making my KW nicer, but This pete isn't bad for someone's first truck.

Ford LN 8000 "Hot Shot"
SpreadAxle replied to SpreadAxle's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
I think I will be doing some engine work for my two current projects tonight. I will have a pic of further progress on this 3208 posted before the night is thru. -
I need help.
SpreadAxle replied to SpreadAxle's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
thanks for the tips everybody. i haven't touched it in awhile, but I'm going to work the frame for now. Working on my Autocar along with this one. I hope to have the frame on this one plumbed in the next day or two. trying to get it to where I can Prime it at least. I'm still trying to decide on a paintjob for it. Maybe one color with scrolls/pinstripes. Not sure right now, but I do have some pretty colors I would like to try on it. Keep watching. 8) -
Autocar Rebuild Update
SpreadAxle replied to SpreadAxle's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
This is a combination of the info listed in Phil Jensen's "Building Model Trucks"(or as I call it the Bible) referring to detailing the lines on the Ford LN's, and a article that appeared in Car Modeler's detailing model trucks column. In Fact, It was that column's first article. The kit brakes are the wedge type brakes, like the Ford kits. I'll have some pix to post in a little bit. Think I'm going to hang the fuel tanks and install the engine tonight. thanks for looking -
It's been awhile since I've taken a min to work on this one. mainly been trying to keep my 1/1 scale Flatbed KW alive. To those who didn't see the original post, this is the Autocar Dump Truck chassis by AMT. I built it 10 years ago as a logger with an AMT Peerless log trailer to match. the cab was Model Master Classic Black with the kit stripes. I'm rebuilding it as it has suffered from moving several times. It will now be pulling a triaxle dump trailer. The details shown were here the first time around. Modifications include: rear fenders from Monogram Snap KW Aerodyne, air brake details, detailed Cummins NTA 370(turbo charger and aftercooler from Diamond Reo Kit), Main/aux trans setup from KW alaskan hauler, and will include a wet kit to operate the dump trailer. I had the fuel lines to the tanks including crossover, air brake lines, luberfiner lines were done, and power steering lines will be added. Today, the frame has been repainted, wheels installed, and fenders mounted. color of frame is testors #1208 Light blue. the weathering when I get to it will be modest. i want to appear to be a 3 or 4 yr old truck that gets washed and taken care of, but you can tell it is driven and worked.

New Backhoe

thanks Rocket -
Not sure if he did the 60" Mack sleepers. Remember they will have a notch in the front corner to make room for the stack. As for the sleeper from the revell rainbow truck, or the current superliner(box art shows a yellow truck) it has notches for dual stacks, and is an aerodyne type sleeper. You will have to square off the roof to make the sleeper a box shape. Remove the aerodyne window area in other words. Also, the notch for the driver's side stack will have to be filled in. AITM makes plenty of MACK related items including sleepers now that I think of it. If you have the old Ertl Rubber duck kit, it's very inaccurate. You will need to combine the sleepers from more than one of those kits to make it right. It needs to be stretched out to 60 scale inches, and made a little taller. Also, the truck itself in the kit is wrong. Uses the DM600, meanwhile the real thing is an R model. STS sold a mack sleeper too I think. good luck. i will help as best as I can. But off hand, those are the 2 ways to get the sleeper right, and remember to use an R model chassis. Hopefully you have the rubber duck kit as you can at least use the cowcatcher bumper he had on that truck. For decals, JBOT is your best bet. He has PIGPEN'S truck decals. AITM is definately the first place I would go, but I don't thnk they have the 60" stanup. I think they have a single bunk with dual exhaust cutouts. Go to White Fang for an accurate duck hood ornament.

SpreadAxle replied to 455 Rocket's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
I'll give it a peek for a future project. I wasn't sure if there would be any considering the military scale seems to be 1/35. thanks -
Tim, you're right about the doors. I didn't even notice til you said that. Decal placement would be easier. The rear of the trailer doesn't seem to be as long behind the wheels as the kit. I wonder if this is less than 40'. Big Truck, I certainly appreciate the offer. I will take you up on it, but I will need to learn how to make decals on my computer, as I have no clue, and I'm sure they all have the newer paint scheme and markings. I have the Testors setup, but everyone tells me it was a waste of money. Although I would like to scratchbuild a newer moving van. Thanks to both of you. I knew this project would be a hit. now I'm really excited. I'm examining my engine as I type this.

The St Louis dump truck site is closed. Shame, he had spec sheets for that truck, and interesting facts about the 5 Black Macks used during filming. I will list what I remember of it's specs. 1977 MackR700SL, 283 HP Tip Turbine Mack(not the 8V71 like it sounds like in the movie) which means the air cleaner will have the 2 tubes coming out, not just one, 10 spd fuller trans, high mount fifth wheel, the sleeper was 60"(the sleeper from revell AG's suprliner kits with some modification should do) and I can't remember much else off the top of my head. the reason Duck's truck sounds like it had a detroit was a combination of studio overdub, as well as one of the stunt double trucks having an 8v71. the site mentioned a detroit powered pull truck. I guess the closeups were filmed in the same manner as the Movin' on tv show. With the Mack being pulled by another truck while the actor pretended to drive. two of the stunt doubles had NTC 350 Cummins engines. I wish that site was still up. There was a lot of history on the truck, and the movie in general, listed there. I hope you find some pix, or have the movie. I'll put it tgis way, it showed which trucks were used when. One of the cummins powered Macks was converted to a mixer after filming was over. the Cruiseliner was sold to a guy in LA And a sad note, none of those trucks, nor Pigpen's truck, have survived. The mixer wrecked in 1988, and the Cruiseliner wrecked in 1978/79 on I 5. No word on what ever happened to Spider Mike's truck.
-
Tim, do you know that truck was 4 sale on ebay, as well as the trailer. I think he pulled the auctions, but they were being sold separately. I wish I knew. It was the best model I've ever seen of the Duck's Mack. I first saw it on your site, and then I found the site that you can click on JBOT's site, it's based in Germany, but his trucks are there. He also did Pigpen's truck, and the blue and gold 352, but I didn't see the flatbed it pulled in the movie.

I've been looking for construction equipment in this scale to load on lowboys and dropdecks. I would love to find some 1/25 Bobcats for a flatbed load. Also, I wonder if there are any military Hummers in 1/25 or 1/24. I hauled one last summer from Fort Bliss in El Paso Tx to Point Mugu Naval station near LA. It was attached to a radar trailer, and I had a generator at the tail of my trailer. I'm looking for stuff like this, as we have all loaded AMT's Cat D8H on a lowboy at least once. I have one myself waitng for assembly. thank you so much. yeah it's a little high, but the detail seems pretty good. -

How did you get the pete logo on the stack?? -
I notice that this truck has stacks, at least for the exhaust. the truck I saw didnt, but I will be doing this truck instead. It's the same truck as far as I'm concerned. I prefer stacks anyway. I drove weedburners for 4 years and that was the only thing I hated about my boss's trucks. Otherwise, his T600s were nice trucks. I will be doing my best to copy this truck. Maybe not the same moving and storage co., but this is exactly what it will be. Including this style drom box. I can't wait to get home and pick up my Freightliner kits so I can get started. I've been buying eBay junker cabs 4 this purpose. Getting the cab worked up shouldn't be too difficult. It will definately take 2. Just need to figure out the intake setup, but it will have the 6V92 like the one I originally saw. All that's with me is the drom box, and the engine. So I will probably start on that over the next few days. Stay cool. 8) I'm in New Braunfels(San Antonio), Tx 2day and summer's already here.

That sounds about right. It would make sense on some of these awful prices. I never saw the beer trucks get this bad, 4 example, but i have seen where a kit i tried to go for was sold, and then it's right back on, higher priced too. The 3 Revell auctions I posted yesterday were kits I would spend some money to get, but I would prefer not to take too much money from my real truck. after all, it pays for the models. lol. I just like to go and look just for fun, just to see how bad it gets. By the way, love the 351 you did..

Very, very nice. -
This is better than the pic I copied last night. Thanks for enlarging it. Now I can really see the details. This is the look I am going for. Perfect. And I have seen the aerodyne conversion kits on a handful of trucks. mostly Freightliner and International trucks. I maybe saw 1 or 2 Astros with it. thanks again for the bigger copy of the pic.

SpreadAxle replied to Old Albion's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
I love it. I am definately inspired. Time to put down my notebook and paper and start building. this is splendid work. -
Although this one has a different drom box, as this one drops down to cover the tanks. At least I can clearly more details in this pic because they are in color. As for the extendable moving van I mentioned in last reply, I think it was an 80's model trailer, I just can't remember who makes it. I'm just going to go with the Trailmobile I have rather than the extendable, so this really shows what I am trying to do. 8) This is much better than the two tiny black and whites I have. BigTruck, go look at this pic, is this what double bingo looked like?
-
I will check that pic out. As for Double Bingo, not sure if this truck had a name, but I know it was a 76, and the guy had it since new. It was repainted in the color scheme like your trailer when it was for sale. Interesting note about the trailer, according to the ad, this moving van was extendable, from 40 to something like 48/50 ft. Again, thanks for all the input everyone.
