Autocar rebuild

Sounds like you got a good selection of kits there. I just bought a bunch of trailers myself. I couldn't resist looking when I read that you were looking for one. -
Photo backdrop idea
SpreadAxle replied to mackinac359's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
I like the Pete factory backdrops you have. Good photography. If you get any ideas for any others, like a truckstop or an interstate, I can send some photos of my travels. What you have here is really good though. I'm going to try it myself. -

That will be a good way to be sure they operate properly. Thanks -
I'm not on eBay much( I know I'll go nuts spending on there, LOL) but I do get on when I'm home, or laid overnight or a weekend somewhere. My screenname is petercar2851. My last truck was a 379, and my truck #2851, hence the screenname. Sometimes it's cool just wtach the ebay dogfights that occur. They can be wild, but the sellers make out.

Autocar rebuild

Lee, the last post was meant for John(Ultraliner). sorry about that. As for your looking for the Autocar Dump, I see they are somewhat plentiful on ebay. I wish I knew it was reissued when it was. i would've stocked up! I guess like all good things, it was discontinued. I have two or three though, because that Montone box would look nice on a few different trucks. Good luck on getting one though. I will say this, if you get the most recent issue, the Montone decals are not on the sheet, but the stripes are. I don't know why they aren't there, I wonder if Montone went under or something. -
Autocar rebuild

Lee, considering the roads and the conditions under which a log trucks operate(no roads 1/2 the time), the float tires are a good choice. I chase these guys in and out of lumber mills all the time, and they do use regular tires as well as the high float. I used the High float on mine. As for the trubo, I wanted my logger to have some power. I knew if i ordered the real thing, I could use the extra power. that's why it has the Spicer Main and auxilary transmissions as well from the Alaskan Hauler kit. Then again, I love twin stick Autocars. never drove one though. The trailer was painted to match. Testors Light blue with black log bunks. -

that's true Lee. They are more of a pickup style. I've seen it done before, but you are right, they are a pain. I had a "practice cab", never could get it right. trying to get past this hurdle so I can continue. This truck will be what they call a "hot shot". It will have a sleeper, a detailed engine, and a dropdeck trailer. You would think in 12 yrs, I would finally have it done, but my career, plus the frustration got in the way. I even made a working steer axle, not bad for a 16 year old at the time, but the doors proved to be more than I expected, silly as it sounds, but I will keep the paper clip idea in mind. If i do end up with am accurate hinge, the problem becomes working with them since they are so small, and lining them up, since they are 2 separate hinges. Oh well, I shall press forward. I'm not going to let this truck make me look bad anymore. LOL. happy modeling!! -

Nice trucks you have there Crash. Tim, Thank you for the compliment. Working as hard as I can on it, and I will be taking some time this weekend to get ahead on its rebuild, although i have done a little more to clean up the frame. Thanks for looking. -

That's a good idea I never thought of. :!: i know this truck has two small hinges, I guess you could say piano style, but I can't seem to replicate them without trouble. So I will definately keep this in mind. thanks for the tip. I may use this on future projects, too. -
What's a good way to hinge the doors on the Amt/Ertl Ford Louisville cab? I have the doors cut off and the door panels, too, but not sure how to proceed. I can never seem to get them right. The frustration :x lead to me building my Autocar logger(under renovation now) just to get away from it. Any suggestions, please let me know. Thanks

My latest project
SpreadAxle replied to Rick's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
The start of my illustrious truck driving career was in one of these. A white and blue 1979 with an NTC 350 and a 13 spd pulling containers. One of the other drivers wrecked it. Since I was till working in the shop as well, I was one of two guys who salvaged it. Sad ending for a good truck, but yes, it was an 18 wheel oven!!!!!! -
Older build, Ford C-600
SpreadAxle replied to Southgate's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
I still have my very first truck model, built in 1991 when I was 13. It was the 1991 re issue of the Mack R model. I painted it dark blue and had a Fruehauf tanker behind it. the trailer is long gone, but I still have the Mack. It nose dived off a shelf more than once(at least mom always said she was sorry. She learned you don't dust models, just the furniture), so it is going to be rebuilt with the dump body from the Autocar dump truck. I was going to restore it, but it deserves new life, and the benefits of what I learned since then. your ford looks good though. briught my memories back. -
Mack R dumper
SpreadAxle replied to Mr. Can Am Garage's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
you just gave me a sense of what my restored R model will look like, as i was planning to use the same dump body. The white cab and hood caught my attention, as that was my plan, but with stripes. You will see it soon. Your truck is worthy by the way. -
Ultraliner with no Bull(dog)
SpreadAxle replied to mackinac359's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
It's your website that got me into modelling again, after 9 years of starting projects and never being able to finish them. Now my models rack up as many miles as my Kenworth does(during assembly anyway) thank you so very much for the inspiration that your website gives. I like this model. very well done. -
Looks good. Your tarp system is something I might add to my Autocar's dump trailer. there was an article in Car Modeler's Building model Trucks column that showed how to make one but I can't find that article. Any tips on making it?

AMT GMC Astro question
SpreadAxle replied to Mack_Mechanic's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Tim's right, the engine is a detroit Diesel 8V 71 in the Astro. the 8V 92 was in the Gmc General/Chevy Bison as well as amt's Kenworth K100 Aerodyne cabovers.
