Truck motor colors
SpreadAxle replied to Aaronw's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
It's also my understanding, although I could be wrong and I hope someone corrects me if I am, but if you are building an older International or Kenworth, they painted all engines red. As for the N14, as the former owner of one, those are black. Some, like mine, had red valve covers. Some had black ones. The red valve covers indicated it was a CELECT PLUS. I hope this helps some. -

that is a great idea. I've been thinking of doing it to my Autocar that I'm rebuilding, hinging the hood. I'd like to see your 351 when you get it done -

Let me make sure everyone understands that I meant the truck in the pic, as well as other good looking trucks can be found at the website I gave, not my old truck. -

that truck was an inspiration for what i wanted to do with my 1:1 379, but I had to trade it in before my dreams came true. The truck will look sharp. ANyone wanting to see it can go to www.legacysleeper.com and click on the gallery. Anyway, good luck. that will be a sharp ride 8) -

thank you. I'm happy to see it coming together. I hope to have the doors on soon, I'm just trying to get a little further on the frame so I can get a coat of paint on it, and the engine installed. -
Cummins KTA600
SpreadAxle replied to Old Albion's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
possibly on some trucks snapper, but I'm not sure if all trucks with that engine have hefty front axles. I do know that you needed extended hoods for it. I've seen trucks with KTA 600's up close, and there isn't much room undre the hood after it's in there. -

Here is the 32088 Cat engine slightly modified. The injector pump is scratchbuilt, along with the lines(which was a night mare) and the fuel/water separator was added(above right side valve cover). I will post more as time goes on. The reason I left the valve covers chrome is that I wnat the appearance of an older truck that was rebuilt and dressed up a little bit by its new owner. you'll see what i mean. -

A stretched out Ford, now that would be different. After I get the doors working, I will be opening up the back wall on the cab for a sort "walk Thru" opening, so the driver doesn't have to crawl thru the window. Check tomorrow, I should have the engine most of the way done. These injector lines take awhile, a lot of patience. -

Aftermarket parts

Cobra, it's a sad(infuriating sometimes) fact, that the aftermarket parts guys go away too quick. Before you really get to buy anything from them. If the budget allows it, i stock up as much as possible. I'm gald I went on a Clint Freeman "shopping spree" before he left us. I was on a hiatus from modeling for a few years, and I came back to find he's not here anymore. He's the one I miss most. he had great stuff. I bought one of the 379 kits he had. It will built as a tribute to my last truck, which was the first rig I ever owned. Quite a few have left us, which is sad, but i hope they come back, or someone picks up where they left off. So, if you can, stock up on those "must have parts, headache racks, conversion kits, etc", because you may miss out. -
I have only been an eBay shopper since june. The only real dogfight I got into, and lost, was for A kenworth challenge mixer. I lost it at the VERY LAST second. I was ashamed of myself for getting caught up in it, but I held a good lead until the last day. Then it got ugly. I max bid $125, well, I guess I got mad, so I increased to $175. I can't remember who it was, but he paid close to $300 by the time it was all said and done. As for the others, the Autocar A64B is one, as well as the International Paystar and Logging trailer set. That one goes for obscene amounts of money as well. The AMT Tandem Vans, you will have to earn those in a fight, and then there are the Freightliner DD cabover kits. These are the kits that I see people go the craziest for. Oh, and don't forget the Peerless log trailer! I'm waiting for people to get out the dueling pistols on that KW mixer. I'm dying to see how bad they get over the torsion bar KW. It's comical, but then again it's sad AMT doesn't pay more attention here. We could have all of our beloved trucks back. I really want the trailers to stay longer. The main one I go for is the Fruehauf Flatbed. Lots of conversions you could do with that one.

Ford LN 8000 "Hot Shot"
SpreadAxle posted a topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
If you've been reading the topic "I need help", this is the truck in question. It was started a very long time ago, and the project was shelved while I tried to figure out how to construct the door hinges. There are 2 on each door, and they are small, so it's difficult. I made a promise to myself to finish it before I opened any new kits. It's the only model I never finished. There will be a dropdeck trailer behind it when finished. This is the first mock up, so I thought I would share it. Thanks for looking. 8) So far, I have the steer axle working, some of the air details started, and some engine detail started. I will post progress as I go. -

SpreadAxle replied to SpreadAxle's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
I started to try and tackle it. I wanted the hinges to be accurate, so I will be working them. I started to scratchbuild some hinges, just trying to get the sizes right. That is what i will be working on tonight. If anyone has a pic of a Louisville Ford with its door open, could you let me know? I will need to add a doorsill, and I want to see what it looks like. Thanks. Here is the cab with the doors removed. That was as far as I got. I don't know if you can see the four hinge pieces mounted to the cab just ahead of opening, plastic is so light colored. -
Cummins KTA600
SpreadAxle replied to Old Albion's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
It usually takes a special truck, meaning extended hoods or raised cabs for a cabover. The 352H peterbilt was made for engines such as this one in mind. In fact, pretty much all the H series 352's I've seen had KTA Cummins engines. Works for me, 'cause I'm a die hard Cummins fan. But if you change your mind about the 359, extended hoods/tall cabs on cabovers are where that engine goes. If you think the kit is huge, you should see the real thing in person. Not sure what it weighs, but I know it's over 1,100 cubic inches. good luck building it. looking good so far. -
