Here is my latest WIP, I am working on a '69 Super Bee, but stuff is drying on that so I turned my attention to this craziness! Last summer I picked up a built up '70 Rebel for $2.50 at a local flea market. I was going to restore it stock, but as it turns out it was a complete junker once I got it apart and stripped. I had this old Johan funny car chassis and blown AMC engine, so I figure why not make it a funny? I started the body this weekend. I fixed the holes in the hood, repaired the glue marks in the roof, filled in the gas cap,and removed the tail light panel because it was screwed up.I also fixed the driver side post which was all bent up. Once all that was done, I started the funny car process: removed the vent windows, opened up the rear wheel wells, moved the front ones forward, and filled in the remains of the door handles. There is a lot of body work to do yet, but this is a good start, I was inspired by the Grant Rebel SST F/C, but I know there never really was a '70 Rebel F/C (to my knowledge anyway). I am leaving the panel lines, because the Grant car has them and I want this to seem as real as possible. At this point I am leaning toward the typical red, white and blue paint scheme that nearly all AMC race cars had with the nose red a diagonal white middle section and a blue tail section, but I am not totally sure about that yet. Thanks for looking! -Larman

2nd and 3rd Builds of 2010: Double Dragster Fiat & FED
larman replied to larman's topic in Model Cars
Those are the early style Trophy Series slicks from AMT. They came with most of the original Trophy series cars. I painted the whitewalls on. -Larman -
These were built pretty much out of the box. I changed the rear wheels and tires, added Revell parts pack blower to the Fiat's engine and injectors made of brass on the dragster engine. Also I had to adapt a drive shaft from a '57 Ford for the Fiat. I added plug wires to both and minor weathering. Thanks for looking! -Larman

I just finished this truck, It is a rebuild of a 70's era AMT kit I got in a bunch of built ups from Ebay. Since I have a bunch of 34's, from the first Trophy series to the Lindberg issues, I decided to have fun and build this as a "Hillbilly" hot rod. The Flathead that is in the stake body was in the truck before I dismantled it and stripped the green and brown brush paint from the model. I swapped in the custom FE engine from another derelict'34 I had. The "load" in the back of the truck is various junk parts that I painted and weathered. They are all glued together on a piece of acetate so they can be removed from the bed if I want. This was built from 100% junk parts and aside from the detail stuff I added like the chain and exhaust stacks, is all AMT. Thanks for looking! -Larman

I am planning on making the fornt just a tick higher, it is just mocked up right now. -Larry

This is the junkyard gasser I am currently working on. It started out with the load of parts in the first pic. These were gathered from fleamarket finds. Both bodies were pretty screwed up so I decided to cut the best parts away, and rejoin them to make one good one.(pic 2 and 3). Since this was a nothing to lose situation, and I have several other AMT and Revell '49s to make custom and stock, I decided to go off the wall and make this a gasser. Highly unlikely I know, but I was kind of inspired by "The Flintstone Flyer Packard" which was also a big heavy bulbous body for drag racing. I figure this would probably be a D or E gas car, although I am not sure what engine I am using yet. I am thinking the 413 that came with the car. So far you can see the mock up in the last 2 pics, with the wheelwells radiused and the big satco slicks, which may be changed depending on what time period I am shooting for. Also I am making this a flipnose, so the front end was glued together and I am in the process of smoothing it all out and making it fit properly.I know it's a weirdo, but I think it will be cool when it's finished! -Larman

Here is a pic of the engine before it was wired and detailed. It is the kit smallblock, with tunnel ram from the '66 Nova, scratch built headers. Paint is GM Flame red. The rear tires were from my parts box, and are 2 piece. I don't know what the came with, but I am guessing they are Revell, possibly from the 70s era dragsters and funnys. The wheels were also from the parts box, and I have no idea what they were from. I stripped them and painted them with metalizer paints. I think they were 60s era AMT or MPC, but not sure what kit or kits they are from. -Larman

Some shots of my scale junkyard. All the models were built from previously built gluebombs or parts cars I had lying around. The "yard" was built from a piece of 1/4 inch plywood, and I used railroad turf and ballast for ground. AMT 57 Chevy, This was a started built up with terrible paint, so I made it into a junk gasser. This was the shell of an old AMT monster truck. Pieced together with stuff from the parts box. I bought this 69 Dart as an unpainted built up at a local fleamarket for .50 cents, it was missing the back bumper, but the 383 was in it and not screwed up, so I kept that. I put a junk 318 from a van in it. I made the tarp to cover up the missing parts on the back end. Another parts box queen, Monogram 70 GTX, this one was painted to represent faded super blue paint, I added a vynl top with masking tape, and opended the door area, and hinged the door to hang open. Revell '63 Chevy, This was missing the trunk lid and engine when I got it, I added a 283 engine from an AMT '57 Chevy, and filled the trunk area with various junk. Another shot of the GTX, you can see the hood hinges in this one, I think they came from an AMT superbee, but I don't remember for sure.

This is a small dio I built a while back. I used a wooden plaque from AC Moore as a base and foamcore for the walls. The car is a '36 Ford 5w by AMT. It is chopped, and has a jacked up straight axle front end. I used bits and pieces fro my parts box to finish it. The figures are from the Fujimi garage set. The ramps are scratch built. Thanks for looking. -Larman

You did a great job on your T! Love the color. Kee up the great work! -Larman

I saw a lot of your stuff there too, and I was really hoping to meet you actually. I really liked the Lindberg '32 Ford pu ( I remember seeing it posted in primer)! I think you also did that really cool old school chopper with the candy red tank ....It seems we build with a similar style, because a lot of the stuff that "struck" me at the NNL had your name on it! -Larman

BTW, I said the length was 40" in a previous post, that was a misprint, the actual length with base is approx. 32 ". The car itself is actually 2 ft. from front tire to end of turtle deck. The dimensions on my model are: T body- 9"wide and 9 1/2" long. T deck is 6" wide and just about 6" long. Rear slick is 5" in diameter and 1/12" wide. The Big T body is 5 1/2" wide and 6 1/2"long. T deck is 4" long and about that wide. Rear slick is 3 3/4" in diameter and 1" wide. You can certainly see the difference in the pictures.I just figured I would actually take a minute to do the measurements, since people seemed to be interested.....Thanks to everyone who has checked this model out, and for all the kind comments! -Larman

When compared to a Monogram Big T ,the body is significantly larger. Originally I was going to use one of those 1/6 Hemi dragster engines you can buy as a kit, but that turned out to be too small, so that is why I scratchbuilt the engine. It doesn't look that much bigger than a Big T, until you put them side by side. If I show it again, I think I will put a Big T with it so people will notice the difference. -Larman
-
I never actually scaled it, I eyeballed everything that was scratchbuilt, and because it is cartoony it probably didn't matter that much. The length with base is 40". It is a big model! That was part of the appeal of the project for me. Now that it is done, storage is a bit of a problem! -Larman
-
This was a long term project which features a scratchbuilt rat fink and engine. The model is not a Big T, but it is actually an old toy called the Big Red Rod, by Marx toys. I bought a severely damaged example on ebay, and that was the start of this project, which took about 1 1/2 years to finish. -Larman

The car is on the road frequently around here.....I took the shot at a local cruise night a couple months before it was in the magazine. -Larry -
