Nice story and a really nice build. I too love the look of these the last of the stock stock cars. Never again were NASCAR stockers built on factory cars from the frame up. Man that is just a good looking car!!!

Has Anyone Built The Tamiya '66 Volkswagen 1300 Beetle?
James W replied to MNRenegade's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
When I built mine I added a .25 inch block between the pan and the front suspension to lower it. At the rear I drilled the swing arm mounts, rounded the square tubes and pinned the swing amrs in place. I then cut the center of the rear axle, inside where it mounts to the trans, and glued in a piece of wire. This will retain the axle halves w/o gluing them to the trans. When you pick up the finished model the rear wheels will droop. When you set it down the wheels will swing up into the fenders. If this dose not make sense to you looking at the instructions, let me know. -
After reading all the input to this thread, I'm changing my answer. Check your references and paint it.

I use the same technique as Jairus, but mix Model Master silver and brass to achieve the coloring you are after. Follow up with a flat clear coat.

Can You Id This Engine
James W replied to Rick Schmidt's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Sorry I can't say for sure if the kits you mention have the OHC 6. Mine is a 1993 issue '1969 Pontiac Firebird 400', #6123. It has a red car on the box as well as a small picture of the T/A version on the side of the box. It also lists the OHC 6 as an option. I would think that later issue versions, after 1993, would have the parts. It was in the late 70's to early 80's that the model companies were blocking off parts of the molds and limiting peice counts. -
Those are nicely done! I was not sure if anyone had ever built the towncar. I've got one that I had started to convert to a tow truck many years ago. But now when I look at the nicely detailed caining on the body I wish I could build it stock.

Thanks John, I bought a shoebox full of old smelly tires and it had several sets of these slicks. They work very well on a vintage rods. (I get the smell off first.)
-
A nice mock-up. I like the length of the chassis. The body looks just right too, looks like you chopped it. From the side shot I would say try to keep the engine from getting too tall, it will unbalance the look. Maybe a crank drive blower is in your future.

Can You Id This Engine
James W replied to Rick Schmidt's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
You might want to nab an AMT 69 Firebird kit for some detail parts or even use the hot rod parts you have on the AMT engine. Cool find, now you have to build a model around it. -
Scratch Building A Gravel Crusher
James W replied to dptydawg's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
This is a great project. Thanks for the WIP pictures. I love the flywheel. -
Very nice, a tasty mix of off the shelf parts. Can you identify the rear tires. I have a few and use them, but supplies are limited. It would be nice to know who made them.

I drive in circles. Not that, a local delivery truck. But I still end up driving in circles.

What Car Do You Wish To Be A Model That Isn't?
James W replied to Clay's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
To answer your heading, I'd like to see a 50-52 Olds coupe As for everyday cars, there are still lots of 67-70 Ford pick ups on the road around here. -
Amt's Rides Magazine 1966 Chevy Nova Ss
James W replied to FenderMender's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Haven't you seen tractors that use this type of axle to raise the drive train above the crop? They must have tiny little drive gears in them to compensate for the larger rolling stock. -
I was eight. Now for the rest of the story. Dad and two older brothers had models. I played with them while they were at school. Not Dad, brothers. Dad built an Aurora or Lindberg small scale hot rod with me. A few months later he said 'It's time we got you a model.' Down to Sprous Reitz for to pick out a model. Revell 55 Chevy. I painted the body and seats blue. Built it stock 'cause that's what Dad said I should do. I built the 150 version 'cause I wasn't a good enough glue-er to build a BelAir. But the wheels could steer. I still have the body, broken and 8 or 9 layers of paint. When you can't afford a new model you rebuild the ones you've got.

There was a John Lucas in Oregon who owned a Chev dealership, but he has been dead for decades. Don't remember anyone by that name in the hobby, however.

Very nice! I've always considered the 68 Charger to be the best looking muscle car out there, and you've done them proud!!! I dig the over-spray on the chassis.

Amx Chassis Replacement
James W replied to James W's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
They're in the mail! -
Welcome to the forum. I've always thought the MustangII was a good looking ride. They were just slugs when they came out. No reason to shun them now. I even started a mid engine version using the AMT with a Olds transaxle back in the day. It was way beyond my abilities then and never saw daylight... Anyway welcome and enjoy.

Miss Printed Boxes
James W replied to Buddhascuda's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Hey Jairus, I've got one of those Lindberg 61 Impalas with the round windshield. They were recalled, LHS owner gave it to me rather then send it back. Nobody has been knocking at my door to buy it. These types of kits won't be worth much until the next golden age of modeling when the guys who have only heard of them want to get there hands on them. Right now nobody cares cause we all saw them on the shelf and they are "common" to us. -
Amx Chassis Replacement
James W replied to James W's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Thanks Andy, after looking over the pics in the suggested web sites, I think I will use the AMT Mustang for the front end. The American floor pan is a good possible sub for the floor pan area, but it looks a little flat in the detail department. I'll have to find some good pictures of the bottom of one of these babies and go from there. Maybe the mustang is a good compromise. If I can't find any good pics, nobody else is going to know that it is not an AMX frame either right? -
Nicely done! Now you need an old COP OUT to go with 'em.

And Another Newbie

Welcome to the forum. It's building season here in the northwest too, but the weeds never really stop growing. (I use the lawn mower as much in the winter as the summer.) -
Miss Printed Boxes

Someday those kit boxes will be worth something, but we will all be dead and Bob Paeth will have the market cornered. -

Thanks for the help guys. I would not have thought of the mustang as a donor.
