1/16th Dukes Charger * 3/28/15* Update, **DAISY DUKE AUTOGRAPH**
Rdkingjay replied to Rdkingjay's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Thank you all again for your support and encouraging words. I am now in the final stages of wrapping up my previously mentioned life changing event. The house has sold! We close in a month. I have jumped back into my models with both feet, including this one. More on a Galaxie limted 46 Aerosedan Mass State cruiser and a '59 Impala convertible tribute build later. The General has been buzzed down and decaled in prep for clear. I am waiting for R/T, Charger and Charger R/T scripts to finish the decal detail. Then the BMF will go on. The scripts are not terribly accurate, but this is not an episode car, just a 1/16th verison of how I would want my 1:1. Still a ways to go after clearing it, but the end is near. Hope you are well. -
1/16th Dukes Charger * 3/28/15* Update, **DAISY DUKE AUTOGRAPH**
Rdkingjay replied to Rdkingjay's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Gentleman, I happy to report that at this time my general is out of storage and as we speak, the body is at a friends house while he scales some detail decals for it. I anticipate having it back after the new year. The body is painted but will be wet sanded, decaled and cleared, then subjected to a three stage polishing process that is norm for my builds. If you are new to this board, please feel free to review my posts and pics and ask questions if you wish, as this one has gone through extensiive changes to correct its many flaws. Thanks for looking. -
1/16th Dukes Charger * 3/28/15* Update, **DAISY DUKE AUTOGRAPH**
Rdkingjay replied to Rdkingjay's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Gentlemen, I am sorry to report that it is now in safe storage as I work my way through a divorce. Shouldn't be too long of a process, as we are 5 months into it. No kids, short term marriage (5 years) no debt to iron out. So I am hopeful that I should be up and running again sometime after the new year. Thank you all for your interest and positive comments. -
Fred, I'll send you a pm with my mailing info. You are my new hero!! Thank you.

Fred, You woudn't happen to have a decal sheet for that 1/16th General Lee, that you dont need, would you? I'd be interested in buying it if so. Thanks in advance. Jay C.

Very cool indeed!! It kind of looks like Cobra's car (stallone movie) after he rolled it into that boat.

Thats a fantastic kit and it looks like your off to a great start.

Inspired builds, next to restos are IMHO, the best ones out there. I'm a sucker for a good story and most inspired builds, like this one. have them. Great job. Any 1:1 pics of the real car??

1/16th Dukes Charger * 3/28/15* Update, **DAISY DUKE AUTOGRAPH**
Rdkingjay replied to Rdkingjay's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Push bar is painted and installed. As you look at these pics, keep in mind that the whole grill assembly is not mounted to the body yet, nor is the hood. So if you keen eyed types see something off kilter a bit, that is why. Pretty happy with the end result. Albeit a bit wider, I think I was able to capture the look of the pushbar on the early episode cars. Thanks for looking. -

Well, so much for a day or two . As some of you know, the grill inserts that are provided with the kit are, for lack of a better term, a waste of plastic. For starters, one set of them is chrome and has a louvered look to them and the other set are too small because they are meant for the 71 street charger. So, I hogged out the grill area and using two layers of brass mesh, one slightly off-set from the other, made my own grill. Off setting them made for smaller but still squared/rectangular openings. I then used thin sheet styrene for the headlight doors and built in a small gap in-between the headlight door grills and the stationary grills, towards the center of each opening. Finally, the thin chrome strip surrounding the grills is easily bendable wire that was a bear to get cut to the right length and get the correct bends into. The push bar is a mix of the two styles used on the real cars. The side profile, which pushes out towards the bumper was used on the first built cars and was not very wide. After they moved filming to CA. a wider, but thinner side profile type was used. I couldn't decide which one I liked better, so here is the end result. The uprights are sheet styrene and the cross bars are styrene tubing, while the bumper mounts are brass. Thanks for looking. -
Giada, or something like that. HOOOOTT!! Or so I hear

Nice pic, thanks. The reason I ask is the front wheel cutouts, but it looks like you don't have to change them. However, on my body, the passenger side wheel well was a bit smaller then the drivers and it made the tire look too far back, after I completed the front suspension. I noticed this prior to closing them up to a stock appearence. I rectified this by taking a small amount of material off from the back side of the wheel opening. Just used a coarse grit sand paper. Also the rear end housing is a bit too wide and will push the tires up against the inside of the rear wheel wells, unless you use the highest setting on the shackles. Hope this helps.

Ken do you have a pic of the actual car you are replicating, or at least the right type? Just curious...

Don't get the AMT '61 Ford Galaxie
Rdkingjay replied to '08SEAL's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The orginal car is pictured below. The sedan conversion is correct, but only part of the story. Simply accomplished by adding strips of styrene to replicate window frames and a "B" pillar. Making the frames for the rear windows curve at the "C" pillar was tricky, because it wanted to curl under heat. The only major discrepency is the different rear window, but I can live with it. If you go back and look at Mercman's original release car, there is more that I had to do. -

Thanks for that, I appreciate it. I'm now working on the filler panel for the area in between the back of the grill/headlights and the radiator support and I have already hogged out the headlight/grill buckets and made my own grill from brass mesh. The headlight doors should look a little more realistic then the ridiculous pieces that came in the kit. Pics in a day or two. -
Love those old Buicks. Chrome bumpers, brand identity, Great job.

Greg, I know the movie you are talking about, but I can't think of the name. I believe the explosion scene in it was taken from the climatic ending of "The Car", in which it too blows up while going over a cliff. Oddly, that same scene was also used in an episode of Knightrider" in the early 80's. Don't ask me why I remember this stuff.

Excellent job Brandon. I wish I had your skills when I was your age. Looking forward to seeing what you can do with that big street charger.

Keep us updated Brandon.

Very interesting project I will be watching closely, I am about 85% done with the same kit, albeit a non-nascar/tv version general lee. Good luck.

Don't get the AMT '61 Ford Galaxie
Rdkingjay replied to '08SEAL's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Original release kit, given to me by a friend who was thinning out his stash. Already shared this in "under glass". Not to beat a dead horse, but curbsides are a great way to learn modeling fundamentals if you are a new builder and also a great break for the "scale keys in the ignition types". And don't think you can't do anything with them either. This one has no engine, or trans and I spent a ton of time on it, just to make it authentic looking. See if you can pick out all the mods to the body, then tell me curbsides have nothing to offer. -
Love that car and movie. I just read in another thread that someone built one from a resin kit. Curbside kit with body, chassis, wheels/tires/metal axles, glass and metal bumpers. If one is out there, I WANT IT!!
