  1. I tried that without as much success as I'd hoped for. Haven't found an appropriate thickness standard in those woods as I need. I don't have a 4" Dremel table saw, just the small hand-held one. Didn't even realize there was one, but a quick search led to that and others. I knew there must be smaller, more accurate saws, but hadn't found them until the Dremel Table Saw search. Now I see there are a variety of Hobby - or 'mini' - saws on the market. Some of them can guage in the thousandths of an inch, but are around $500 to start. Fortunately, I only need hundredths, and they seem to be available for under $200. Really appreciate the help and getting me started in the right direction.
  2. I've had no luck finding true scale (1:24, 1:25) diorama lumber and have decided the best bet is to just cut my own. I realize lots of places offer something they call 'close,' but I really don't want a 2 x 4 that scales out to 3 x 6 or so in 1:1. Additionally, this will provide the opportunity to use a variety of different woods (more interested in correct lumber size than grain). I have a table saw, chop saw, circular, jig, and dremel, but obviously none of those would be suitable. I considered picking up a scroll saw, but not sure that will be fine enough. I need to get sizes down to at least .073 x .146. Any suggestions as to the proper piece of equipment would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
  3. Nice. I'm also a little curious about the stretch chassis. Any photo of the underside available? Thanks.
  4. Good job. I like this quite a bit.
  5. That's sort of the purpose - it allows one to look at those things he's interested in and not waste time on the ones he isn't. I would personally prefer more categories to fewer.
  6. You're right - at least for the areas we're in. I stop by 3 local locations for Hobby Lobby and all ran a 25% discount on kits for the 2 weeks before Christmas. I did check and found they would accept the 40% coupon in lieu of the sale price and probably purchased about half a dozen kits over the 2-week period. Only 1 sales clerk questioned it, but after checking with the manager said no problem. That is certainly one of the perks of Hobby Lobby - very few other stores will do that.
  7. Yes, that helps a great deal. I had no idea that it would contain that much material. Thank you.
  8. Yes, I agree on price and would also like to know just how comprehensive it is.
  9. I would generally tend to agree, especially in a post coming from a self-described 'graduate student.' However, in this instance, either spelling may be considered correct, albeit the double 'l's are more common to non-U.S. English-speaking countries such as the UK and Canada. While it looks odd and I do not really care for it, it should be considered correct within the confines of a multinational forum - even if the writer currently resides in Texas.
  10. That's an excellent point and one most people tend to overlook. I have no problem at all with that sort of thing and do expect it, particularly on the older builts. If you can't re-attach a mirror, bumper, header, or wheel, you probably shouldn't be buying built models.
  11. I usually try and comment on the most positive aspect of the deal - speed of shipping, great price or communication, and sometimes exceptional packaging. This time, however, poor packaging will certainly be mentioned. I really dislike leaving negative feedback, but I'm really not seeing much way around it in this instance.
  12. I recently purchased a large lot of '60's and '70's built models on eBay. I sent a note with payment asking that they be packaged well and mentioned that a lot of sellers lately are just tossing them in a box and mailing. I received the items in 2 boxes about a week later. One had a sheet of newspaper between layers of models; the other had them (you guessed it) tossed in a box and had newspaper wadding at the top to fill the empty space. Original issues on the bottom were crushed and in pieces. When I advised of the condition in which the models arrived, the seller stated that there was no way he could ship safely for the amount charged ($25 - his own listed price), and that if I had wanted them packaged well I should have offered to pay more. In point of fact, the models weighed 24 pounds and could have been safely shipped in one box USPS Parcel, for $19. I do a lot of shipping and checked to be sure. Waiting a few days to leave feedback to make sure it's not left out of annoyance, but I don't think it will be good. On the positive side, most sellers (and traders) do make some effort to package safely. It's rare that something actually arrives damaged.
  13. Really like what you did with those antennas. Great job all around.
  14. That's interesting. I wasn't aware of it, but just did a Google search (Adventures In Scale Modeling) and found several things - Amazon has a book of some of the projects, but YouTube has a couple of the segments available. As a matter of fact, the book sounded so good after reading the description, I just did a 'Buy It Now' on eBay for $4.99. There are still a couple others left.
  15. I've been considering a building similar, in that I was planning the same type siding application, so I was quite anxious to see how yours turned out. Looks good, but I'm wondering about the width-size slats (6" scale). They lend themselves quite well to either a vintage building that used the more narrow slats or a contemporary garage - would look fantastic whether weathered or painted. Still, did you at any point wonder if you should have gone a bit wider? Really nice job.
  16. One of the best kits out there for sheer potential. Looking forward to seeing another take on it.
  17. Very nice - could be mistaken for a Rockwell scene.
  18. That works pretty well - makes for scale 1 1/2" thick by 6" siding. Balsa sheets look like they make for good sheathing.
  19. Yes, nice start. Great deal of potential there.
  20. Very nice start - looking forward to seeing what you decide on for the siding.
  21. That's the danger with a thread like this - if specific sellers aren't named, or a link to the offending listing, then perhaps legitimate sellers are hurt in the witch hunt process. And that is a very unfortunate thing.
  22. Didn't physically receive it today, but did win and pay for it. Very pleased with this 48-car junkyard - my maximum bid was significantly more than I got it for. http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=261091019187&ssPageName=ADME:B:EOIBSA:US:3160
  23. Yes, looking forward to seeing this on a frame.
  24. Great job. Accessories and details are fantastic.
  25. Interesting - I'll have to check the local one on my regular Hobby Lobby run Tuesday. It's right across the street.
