Revell posted this..
Tom Geiger replied to thatz4u's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Amen, it's not all about us. Revell has this aimed at the casual modeler and the youth market that they are now chasing. That's 99% of their market. -

1960 Plymouth airport limo. I need to finish this one. This tool was originally a Johan promo, as in ordered and paid for by Plymouth. Johan didn't even think of doing it as a kit in 1960. It wasn't a kit until the USA Oldies Series. 1941 Plymouth 4 door sedan in resin. I think this one was Time Machine Resins. There's also an R&R 1950 Plymouth 4 door sedan. 1955 Buick wagon in resin by R&R 1953 Plymouth wagon by Perry's Resin 1969 Chevy wagon resin by R&R Chrysler 300 resin wagon by Jimmy Flintstone. Chrysler actually sold these in foreign markets where they didn't market the Magnum. 1953 Ford resin by Jimmy Flintstone Revell '55 Mercury and Buick 4 door cars in 1/32 scale and I have much more... -

Auto modelers - Left or right brained?
Tom Geiger replied to Jantrix's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
You steer with your left hand because you drive a stick and shift with your right hand. I do it too. It doesn't matter if you are driving an automatic or haven't even driven a stick for a long time. It's just a habit. I learned to drive stick when I was 19. At first, I had no experience steering with my left hand and thought I'd never get it. But soon enough you learn that skill. And since then, I probably do more things left handed than I realize. -
Hey Round2 Let's see these again......
Tom Geiger replied to Sledsel's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
My point. I wouldn't be trying to sell 10,000 of them. But if you see one at a show for $5-10, they are actually nice kits to build. -

Ben, I'm happy to report I bought all my Volare's back when they weren't worth anything. One I just checked for reference on a point someone made above has a $12 price sticker on it. I have a few more, at least two of each year. I doubt I paid more than $20 for any of them. I was going through a junk box at a show and found at least 6 Volares. The dealer told me he was into them when they were new and he painted those to represent factory colors. I think I paid $3 each for them. I had someone on a message board who wanted one of them badly, so I just mailed it to him. Funny thing.. same car was offered to me in trade maybe 6 months later by another person! -
And then YOU came along. You've gotten in your licks lately Mike. Calling the kettle black!

1/25 Revell Ford Del Rio Ranch Wagon 2'n'1
Tom Geiger replied to Matt T.'s topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
There you go guys. For those of you who say that your constant bashing of every kit before it even comes out, doesn't do any harm... multiply this by lots of guys who have read the threads but didn't comment. -
Keep on going! I took my wife to a post surgery doctors visit today, the first time out of the house in three weeks since her heart surgery. The doctor remarked that the reason why her lungs are healed (one lung is deflated during surgery to create the room to get in to operate. It takes quite a beating) is that she's not a smoker. He said it takes smokers twice as long to recover... double that again for fat smokers!

Some of the kits of that era were really nice kits. The EXP, Dodge Omni, Chevy Cavalier to name a few were very nicely detailed and went together reasonably well. I just don't know if the world can absorb another 10,000 of each of them. I'd love to know how well that Dodge Daytona sold a few years ago. I know dealers were giving them to shows to use as door prizes. -

In his handwriting... man should know how to spell his own name. I've known Dave for 30 years, way before the whole Model King thing... Pretty picky for a guy who always puts the dollar sign in the wrong spot? The correct way: $4.00 The way you do it: 4.00$ America Often? -
Here's the Miss Deal. I did manage to complete it minus the blower (the part on both my kits was sunken in) and the exhaust (someone warned me about it). I finished up those details and added a bit more weathering later. My next try was a Lindberg Dodge A100 pickup. I got this far! Thwarted by those silly doors. I eventually glued them shut and made nonfunctioning but in scale hinges. We will have some fun!

Sounds like a fun idea Rob. As of right now I have no plans for the holiday weekend. My wife is still recovering from her operation and I've been home helping her, effectively house bound. I do the 24 Hour Build every February. This build will probably have the same amount of bench time, just not marathoned. I expect to sleep, eat and do other things in between build sessions! Anyway the key to doing a quick build is KEEP IT SIMPLE! Find fairly simple kit, hopefully one you have duplicates of, that's expendable and just build it! My first go at the 24 Hour Build was the Revell '53 Studebaker Miss Deal Funny car. Classic kit I always wanted to do, and I had three of them. I did only basic cleanup on the parts, and when I screwed something up, I just grabbed those parts from a second kit to keep moving forward. I had it pretty much wrapped up by 6 am. (we had until noon) It wasn't perfect, and I did go back and fix a few things in the following weeks, but it was pretty satisfying and most of all fun!

The best modelers on the board are not remembered for their mistakes, but what they learned from them and how they moved forward. The best aren't ashamed to say that they're on the third paint job, or second scratch built something. Nobody gets everything right the first time. Nobody. Great models exist because the builder did not give up!

1/25 Revell Ford Del Rio Ranch Wagon 2'n'1
Tom Geiger replied to Matt T.'s topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
and Morgan Automotive Detail has the Custom 4 door sedan trans kit! I think Revell still has a few things up their sleeve... it's a near given that we'll see a Ranchero. If I was in charge, I'd do a couple different '58s. I think it would really surprise the community if the next release was a 1958 Ranchero. -

and honestly, it's not that great a kit. Plastic tires, faint detail in the interior, chassis and engine bay. I just finished one and spent a lot of time adding things to make it presentable. I believe the tool exists, I spoke to Dave Burket a few years ago and he wasn't interested because he didn't see a demand for the kit. I suggested the Duck Tape drag car, but the drag parts weren't in the kit. It would sell better as the earlier model car, and I don't believe it would be that much work to back date it. -
Anyone else own a Testors pin vise?
Tom Geiger replied to JTalmage's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I have an exacto brand battery power drill. The chuck has gotten worn over time and no longer holds the smallest drill bits. My solution was to cut a small length of scale heater hose and I glued the small bits inside it. Works like a charm! -
A quick Microsol question.
Tom Geiger replied to HotRodaSaurus's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
John, your best bet is to create a thread in the "Wanted" section on this board to get a new copy of that decal sheet. In the past, I had a very small decal come off a model and it had lost it's stick-um. I was successful in getting it back onto the car using Micro Kristal Klear canopy cement. -

The MPC Volare... yes, the tool would be that 1980 square headlight car. There's one on eBay right now for (gasp!) $120 -

I bought myself a spiffy new grille a few weeks ago, bill just came so I guess that's my present! -
At one point New Jersey didn't. They had two types, and only people under 21 had a photo. The standard license was done on the same state paper as the vehicle registration, not laminated and didn't look all that official. I went to Colorado on business and had a car rental reservation through Hertz, the vendor my company used. They wouldn't rent me a car, telling me my license was fake! They had a book that had a photo of every state's license and for NJ, the book showed the photo license that was only for those under 21. I went to another rental counter in the airport and had no problem renting a car! Story not over... when I filed my expense report, my company refused to pay for my rental car.... not our vendor! It took me months to clear that one up and get paid!

Another local shop closes it's doors
Tom Geiger replied to timc's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Reminded me of something... Not far from my house there's a model railroad shop. Crummy little building with paint peeling off the homemade sign. I drive past it all the time so I got curious and stopped in. I walked in and immediately was hit with the stench of cigarette smoke. The guy in his sixties behind the counter comes running out with cigarette in hand and asks me what I want. I tell him I build model cars and I'm not looking for anything in particular, I'd just like to browse. He tells me no! I point across to the paint racks and the display of basswood and such... and he says that stuff is only for trains. So I leave! What an idiot. Even though it was a train shop I could've become a regular customer for glues, paints and scratch building supplies, especially since it is the closest place to my house! And if he had a decent stock of things, maybe I would've found some G scale accessories. And the day he winds up out of business, he will wonder why. -
It doesn't make any sense
Tom Geiger replied to forthlin's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The situation is that with hobbyists, many of us can only have one collector car. Would you want that to be an old Ford 4 door sedan, probably with a six? Not exactly an exciting car. When I used to run in the demo derby cars like that would show up. When asked, the owner would tell you that he tried to sell it for a year, and finally he needed to get it off his property. Nobody was buying!
