Top Sportsman '69 Camaro WIP
Mister Twister replied to Mister Twister's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
Thanks fellas......a simple update. I did some work on the roll cage with just a couple of pieces left to put in and some wheelie bars. -
Here is the beginning of a Top Sportsman Camaro. I'll use a modified Revell chassis pan and a heavily modified tube chassis. Very little will be left of the original tube chassis as I will scratch build a new one including coil over shocks. I have just a few small sub assemblies started as you can see in the pics. I expect this to take a little while to complete. I've been searching the web for some ideas on graphics that I have seen lately. I haven't built a detailed P/M type car in awhile. I'm still contemplating cutting every thing open.

You have the 80's pro stock stance down pat. Nice work overall and the paint and graphics are right on. -

Not the normal Top Sportsman, Pro Mod type build I usually do. It seems good to do a change up sometimes. -
This is sort of built out of the box with a few added pieces like wheels, nitrous bottle, a few photo etch pieces and so on. It has a nitrous fed small block, some interior detailing like a 6 point roll bar, seat belt harness etc.. Its painted in a satin black finish with a flat black hood. It has a monochrome (blackout look) on the body with a few decals here and there. Thanks

Thanks fellas....the Dominator carbs wouldn't be allowed no matter the size (750 cfm,1050 cfm etc.) but the 4160 probably would be as it has a stock looking appearance. I used Model Master lacquer for color and Dupli Color Perfect Match for the clear. I did what my normal thought pattern was after it wrinkled the top....and that was to sand out the wrinkles caused by the clear but it didn't work. I could have stripped the body but it turned out nice (other than the roof) and the Bagwell decals are somewhat difficult to come by. That's when my diorama ideas kicked in. Like I said in an earlier post "Am I happy with this build?....Heck yeah!" Its on to the next project.

Lookin' good Jim.....Super clean as usual.

That is a great looking collection you have Brett...….The starting line shots really tell the story. Nice job!

Well fellas here is where I stand with this build as of today. The tarp and assorted diorama stuff should be enough of a sign that something went wrong......somewhere. In particular, the clear coat. Changing clear is not a great idea for me any way....especially not in the winter. I changed from my trusty Model Master enamel to a Dupli Color acrylic...I assume. Any way it really didn't like the paint and that's all I can say. I changed clear several years ago with much the same results on a Chevy Beretta pro mod. It was to be a slick ice blue color with white graphics and called the CHILL FACTOR. It didn't happen....the clear ate the paint immediately. I had way too much detail in it to scrap it....so I stripped all paint and sprayed it flat black....put the name "GRIZZLY"on the doors and the rest is history. It can be viewed some where here on the forum or in my photobucket pro mod album......Most builds can be salvaged. Several years ago, when I was attending model car contests on a regular basis with my friend Wayne Stevens JR (1320Wayne)....a fellow modeler said that I used tarps and open parachutes and so on to cover up mistakes on my builds. That's not true (except with this Steve Bagwell build)…..LOL, I really like diorama type builds. You can cover up mistakes, yes...but that is not the only reason to use tarps and so on...just be brave and add the extra detail if you please. So, I salvaged this build...am I happy? Heck Yeah! I'm just as happy as when I started. Several details to go. Finished pics later. Thanks!

Your subtle detail work really stands out on this build. Its coming along very nicely......Keep at it.

Not much more to do.....Mostly waiting to spray on the clear. oldr-n-drt mentioned about the nostalgia ss classes only running 10.5 wide tires but it slipped my mind about the outlaw super stock classes which are more liberal in the rules with tire size, engine displacement etc.. The oss classes do have rules but they are more of run whatcha brung type of set up.

I sprayed the body with MM Star Spangled Blue and got the decals and graphics in place. I'll have to wait on a good weather day for the clear coat. I took liberties with the decals but the overall theme is still in line with the original (real) car. I am doing this build as a more modern version of the actual car so there will be differences. With some bad weather predicted for this weekend it may be a few days on the clear coat. For 25 year old decals they went on perfectly. I'm happy with the outcome. More when I can.

Very convincing......I like your work....It always stands out.

Thanks fellas! -
You said that you took some liberties with this build.....that is what makes model building fun...keep at it. Your model is super clean and nicely detailed. I might have missed it but...is that color Big Bad Blue AMC color?

Thanks fellas....I did some work on the engine and made some long collectors for the headers. Lots of test fitting is necessary in a build of this nature. The chassis and body fit well but the final glue in will allow the chassis to set deeper inside the body and making the car look lower. I decided to do this as a Nostalgia Super Stock because I believe it just fits better for a modern, updated type of race car. Thanks
