  1. Finally...some progress.
  2. The '59 and '60 Buicks used what GM called a K Frame. The one Tom posted as an AMT stock '60 in post #29 is essentially correct, as far as the frame itself goes. The suspension parts...well it gets a little wonky there. lol. Between the two years there were only minor differences, basically in the way the big K member was shaped in profile, to allow the designers to drop the front floors down just a tad. That all said, Tom, you gotta finish that sucker. These cars are epic and the bottom is completely unimportant in relation to the top side. Besides, GM frame designs of the era changed with the wind. If you don't want to finish it, send it to me...I'd be more than happy to have it!

  8. Guys, he's not asking about the proper placement of a clear coat in relation to decals. He's talking about the main thing about contests that has bugged the carp out of me for ages -- walking into a show and seeing a sea of gleaming, dipped-in-syrup-shiny, so-glossy-you-can-see-your-nosehairs-in-the-reflection...race cars. Jim, it may be a lost cause, but I totally understand where you're coming from. The majority, however, seem to be blind to scale sheen, and like Pavlov's Dogs to the Bell start drooling uncontrollably at the sight of 2 scale inches of clearcoat. Oddly enough, the way people talk about it on a forum, you'd think that you'd never walk into a show and see super-shine, yet walk into any show, and there it is...wall-to-wall. You'd think it were crack!

  10. Mine wasn't mock indignation. It was a sincere desire to resist saying something about how completely ignorant you'd made yourself sound. I don't think you "get it" even a fraction as well as you think you do, but I'm not here to bash you, so I bit my tongue.
  11. I'm sure some of you probably spotted this in the Iggy & Seb update from the end of March, but I thought it was just too freakin' cool and had to pass it along for those who hadn't. I know I've seen the front bumper before...but I can't place it. If you have an info on it or it's builder, please share!

  13. I get mine from Scale Dreams. He's got the best price on BMF, period. Look 'im up you'll be glad you did. I get 2 to cut the shipping, but it's still cheapest out there even if you only get 1.
  14. Digressing a page or so... If anyone really thinks that the HAMB and Billetproof are the old farts club, you need to give yourself a very large Gibbs-style smack on the back of the head. You could not be more mistaken. Go to the back of the class. Do not pass "Go" and do not collect the $200. Now this is one of those times I am thinking "what planet are these people from?"

  16. Actually, I've found that the more I stay out of the General section, the more building I get done. And that's exactly what I do tend to do, especially when I'm not recovering from a heart attack. I don't, however, see where anyone (or myself) said your opinions were unwanted or useless. Personally, I disagree with your assessment that the Gran Turismo generation is only interested in Tuners and Sports Cars, but I that's about the only point I can think of with you, specifically. If you referring to my "what planet" comment, I use that very broadly. People in general have a tendency to crawl into little boxes and have a difficult time looking outside of them...which at times leads to some very narrow perceptions. That's human nature, though, not aimed directly at you.
  17. By all means, Brett, don't let a couple people get you ruffled. I for one find your posts insightful and informative, in what at times can be a sea of "what the f...planet do they live on where they think this". Ignore them, and keep speaking your mind. Lots of us "old codgers" would prefer to hear it than not.
  18. Yep, Brett...I'd meant to hit on that one, too. Kitbashing is as old as Testor's Tube Glue...nothing new about it at all.
  19. Well, one or two parts from one kit used on another does not really justify calling it kitbashed. I see kitbashing as when you combine major assemblies from one or more kits into the main build, such as Marshall's hearse, above. Another example would be vastly improving an AMT '69 Chevelle kit by using the entire much much higher quality chassis from an AMT '69 Cutlass, and finishing it off with a big block from a Revell '69 Corvette. Generally speaking, it comes down to this - improving the kit you want to build by swapping out inferior kit parts with superior kit parts (generally speaking, full assemblies). All kits not being created equal, it's often necessary to take the best of several to get the level of quality we want to start with. More advanced kitbashing gets into pilfering one or two specific parts from a multitude of kits, but this is generally avoided by more highly experienced modelers because they've done it enough times to realize how expensive it is, and that they can simply make the parts themselves using 1:1 reference and not only spare a kit, but end up with a better part anyway. Kit manufacturers do it, but only to a relatively small extent. They could stand to do it a LOT more often with some of the older kits, and they'd find themselves getting standing ovations. Unfortunately, foresight was a quality typically absent during the design stages of kits back then, and because of how the dies are set up it would not often be viable from a manufacturing standpoint.
