Nick Notarangelo Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 Lindbergs 1940 ford is on that list, that has been the only kit in 35 years of building models that I have imploded into the wall.

I don't think it's "unbuildable" it's just a very bad copy of the AMT kit. I used the chrome from one to restore a AMT '40. Still have the rest, but won't build it. It's great for building those junk yard highly weathered cars.
spencer1984 Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 The Lindberg '40 Ford makes good stock car fodder, too (not my build):

Sledsel Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 My "unbuildable" is the Revell 49 Merc. Not because it will not go together, but because I refuse to build it because the body looks like a die cast. I would spend less time chopping an AMT or MPC kit than fixing that POS. Great parts kit for my MPC snappers though

The AMT kit by other hand, is just superb.

Drake69 Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 Lindy Ford.... It did take A LOT of cleanup to get her even halfway presentable (yes... and you can still see the seam on the front fenders...), but like it was said before, they make great vintage NASCAR and hot rodder builds.
roadhawg Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 The Lindberg '40 Ford makes good stock car fodder, too (not my build): Those are Wendell Scott cars from the movie "Greased Lightning". Are those yours?

Lovefordgalaxie Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 What about that chop do you find objectionable? On my part, I dislike the very fact it's chopped. For me there isn't such thing as a well done chop job, I like cars the way they were manufactured. For someone like me, that likes factory stock, that kit is basically useless to the purpose of building a Mercury automobile replica. Another kit I'm never gonna buy is the Revell Mercury Wagon. If they couldn't go over the expense of tooling a stock Mercury V8 to include in the kit, I can't go over the expense of buying it, as I would have to ruin a much better AMT kit for the stock engine. As a general rule, if a kit can't be built to replicate a factory fresh and 100% stock automobile, I won't buy it.
Greg Myers Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 Have you considered trading with someone here on the board? Custom parts (engine) for stock? Why limit your building experience by something easily fixed?
spencer1984 Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 Those are Wendell Scott cars from the movie "Greased Lightning". Are those yours? No, my father built these. It were one of the times where our interests overlapped, since he builds stock cars and I do movie cars.
roadhawg Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 No, my father built these. It were one of the times where our interests overlapped, since he builds stock cars and I do movie cars. Very good builds, glad to see them...that movie was filmed at my home racetrack, the old Athens Ga Speedway, I was there for most of the filming.
lordairgtar Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 For me there isn't such thing as a well done chop job, I think the Hirohata Merc by Sam Barris was a very beautifully done car.
Lovefordgalaxie Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 I think the Hirohata Merc by Sam Barris was a very beautifully done car. Oh boy, that aberration... Looks like a car someone crashed and rebuilt with a salad of parts from different cars. Factory stock 1949 Mercury any day.
Snake45 Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 Oh boy, that aberration... Looks like a car someone crashed and rebuilt with a salad of parts from different cars. Factory stock 1949 Mercury any day. I'm completely unbiased here. I find them both equally unattractive.
Sledsel Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 What about that chop do you find objectionable? The center of the roof at the "B" pillar is chopped less than the front or back of the roof. The roof is too "flat" looking and the V in the windshield, cowl and hood are almost non-existent. The body sides are very flat, rocker panels are squared off along with the bottom of the rear quarters, the hood has an odd shape where the compound curve goes from the side to the front. Body is pretty thick too. Just a poor example of a great car. Have seen some nice builds, but the body issues just jump out to me personally and far too much work to fix. That is my view of the car, I hope it does not start a big pissing match like my detailed critique of the Revell 57 Ford Custom. This is an AMT, used the 1/4 windows from the Revell body (best part of the body, LOL) I have about 2 hours of work into it.
