landman Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 (edited) I recently unpacked about 65 built models. A few are OK. Many need repairs like putting back fallen pieces. Some deserve a rebuild. I picked this one to start with. I took it apart. Missing a couple of mirrors and one landau iron. The windshield frame is broken as are two wheels. The rest is useable. I will repaint it. Or rather paint it, as it was a clearcoat over the colored plastic. Likely one of these two schemes. Edited January 1, 2021 by landman
chunkypeanutbutter Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 Hard call... Both colors look real nice.
misterNNL Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 Personally I like the earth tones. That is something completely different.A worthy project overall.
landman Posted April 21, 2015 Author Posted April 21, 2015 OK now, I'm color blind. Are the fenders of the grey car grey or black?
chunkypeanutbutter Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 Looks like a dark metallic grey to me.
421gto Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 Fenders look dark green to me, but the body looks like a brown/grey mix
landman Posted April 22, 2015 Author Posted April 22, 2015 (edited) Turns out there are a lot more broken spokes than I thought. I have the remnants of a MetalMaster Packard. I will use those wheels. They fit the Cadillac's hubs and I think I can adapt the Cadillac's hubcap to them. Edited January 3, 2021 by landman
charlie8575 Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 I like the blue car better. More cheerful without being too loud. Charlie Larkin
microwheel Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 Cool project to do a rebuild with. Gonna be interesting to see what you do with it.
Eric Macleod Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 I have always liked the colors on Bill's car a lot. I don't remember seeing the blue car at St. Johns (what does that tell you?) but from the photos it is a real honey. Personally I would go with the gray. You have a great project going here.

I agree. 2-tone gray with black fenders. Very classy.

Twokidsnosleep Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 (edited) Great subject to restore; doing this is one of my favourite parts of model building Something cool about taking an old, discarded model apart and making something of it...I guess if I could do that at full 1:1 scale I would be a car restorer! Love that on the dolly photo in your scale garage!!! I like the grey black paint scheme, but that blue is nice too. Hate to suggest it, but you could re-wire those wheels Edited April 23, 2015 by Twokidsnosleep
MAGIC MUFFLER Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 I prepped this '31 V-16 for Pebble Beach several yrs ago. I detailed it many times. I may have pics in my archives should you need a few more shots of it. I like the build you're doing. Love the garage idea on the dolly - Great work! Keep us posted..
landman Posted April 23, 2015 Author Posted April 23, 2015 Thank you Billy. I may take you up on your offer. That background dio has its own thread and is constantly evolving.
wayne swayze Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 Thoroughly agree about rebuilding an old build-up. It's like you're saving something from a terrible fate...the dumpster! I like this car and hope you do well with it. Personally, I like the sophisticated look of the grey/black colours. The dolly in your garage looks very cool!
Eric Macleod Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 Here is what I did with my junk Cadillac restoration. It can be done.

Eric Macleod Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 Oh when I say "junk Caddy" I mean this one was a restoration also. It looked a tad bit worse than the fine model Landman is working on. I am trying to say, there is hope, even when you start out with junk. E-
brewsterg6 Posted April 25, 2015 Posted April 25, 2015 Great subject, Pat! I have the full set of Cabriolet, Phaeton, and Madame X from Jo han of the '31 Caddys. All need to be rebuilt as well, as I first did them when I was about 12. The wire wheels are going to be hard to come by for me as well! Best of luck on them...
landman Posted April 28, 2015 Author Posted April 28, 2015 (edited) Started sanding on the body and fenders. opened up the locating holes for the various parts. Made an executive decision. I will blank off the fender wells and mount the spare on the rear of the body. Edited January 3, 2021 by landman
