And if you do, is yours also garbage? I've put the biggest drill bit that it comes with in to it, and tightened it down literally all the way, with the assistance of a pair of pliers, and it still doesnt grip it's own drill bit!!

I have one...... There are two collets (sp?) one in the end and one in the handle. It can hold 4 series of bits. Take it apart and see if there is another collet in the handle.....

Had the same problem when I got mine....... :)

Mine feels like there was only 1... but I'll take another look. I tried looking int here but couldnt see anything. Guess I'll be doing exploratory surgery on it lol

If you keep switching drill bits back and forth, after a while the pin vise won't tighten around the smaller bits. Especially with the cheaper pin vises made of softer aluminum. The bits are a lot harder than the aluminum and the corners of the "X" in the pin vise will crush around the larger bits. If you don't tighten it enough and the bit snags in your work, and the pin vise turns but the bit doesn't, then you get even more wear. Get a couple of good pin vises to use with the smaller bits that you use most often (you might have a couple of favorite drill sizes for ignition wiring or pins to anchor small parts). Don't use those with the larger bits. For larger bits, you can get steel collets. Check the tools/supplies section on eBay; a few vendors sell collet sets for cheap.

I ended up using an old school hand crank drill that my dad has had forever. But a working pin vise sure would be nice.

I have one. It works great. Best investment into my hobby I've made so far. I haven't any problems with it besides I have a hard time getting an 1/8th bit out of it. It won't let go. So I guess I have the opposite problem.

I have an exacto brand battery power drill. The chuck has gotten worn over time and no longer holds the smallest drill bits. My solution was to cut a small length of scale heater hose and I glued the small bits inside it. Works like a charm!

I have an old x-acto pin vise but I also have a inexpensive four piece set of four from Micro Mark and

have used the heck out of them for close to ten years now. They grip tight and never slip plus like I

said are inexpensive.

From my experience everything Testor makes is junk. I have an X-acto pin vise.
