Bob Ellis Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 It's true, you really cleaned up a somewhat clunky casting. They are pretty rugged though. I always say, equate your time to money. Did this casting save you a lot of time engineering it by yourself?
RancheroSteve Posted July 8, 2015 Author Posted July 8, 2015 I always say, equate your time to money. Did this casting save you a lot of time engineering it by yourself? Yes, I would definitely say that this saved me time over doing it myself, and the price was right (around $15). Another part of my motivation in doing this one is in preparation for a similar conversion I have in mind that I will have to do myself.
RancheroSteve Posted July 13, 2015 Author Posted July 13, 2015 (edited) Out back, I've added yet more brass strip to represent the trim that runs between the taillights. This isn't part of the kit or the resin body, but I didn't want the taillight chrome to just end and float in space. This will give me two clean strips that I can foil. It's actually a better fit than it appears here - I only need to lightly push the bumper down. As you can see, I've also de-chromed the bumper - I'll Alclad it later. And I think I might as well remove the back-up lights. Edited July 13, 2015 by RancheroSteve
davysmodels Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 Steve, The 62 Catalina project looks great. What glue are you using to attach the brass to the resin. thanks
RancheroSteve Posted July 17, 2015 Author Posted July 17, 2015 What glue are you using to attach the brass to the resin. Larry - I'm just using regular Zap CA glue - it seems to be working just fine. Here's a bit more progress - I've shortened up the interior (as you can see, I'll be using the custom interior panels and seat) and added a package shelf behind the seat. Here it is test-fitted into the body:
sbk Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 As others have said, very interesting brass work! Do you solder anything at all on it? For instance, on the windshield trim along the roof, are those separate strips for the top & front? Or, is it an illusion that it seems larger than 1/32"? Really looks great! Too bad they couldn't be electroplated before attaching, & somehow make it though all of the painting & polishing without cutting through to the brass color.
60s era Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Doing a Great Job so far . Very nice work on a cool build. Will be following for sure....... Tom

Nothing is soldered - it's all just (the same dimension) individual strips, bent & glued, so I'm guessing it's a camera angle/illusion thing if they look different. I know some guys who electroplate their trim, but that's a little beyond my reach - for this build at least.
RancheroSteve Posted August 13, 2015 Author Posted August 13, 2015 Getting some color on. Dupli-Color BGM0539. Still needs some sanding, probably another coat, and some clear.
RancheroSteve Posted August 25, 2015 Author Posted August 25, 2015 While the paint's drying on the body I've been doing some work on the chassis. The frame is painted the same color as the body. Since this is a custom, I'm not too worried about being factory correct. Even though I'm obviously not building this "out of the box", I have to put in a plug for this kit - everything fits and goes together really nicely, with a good level of detail. Engine and interior are coming along, too - more on that soon.
RancheroSteve Posted August 28, 2015 Author Posted August 28, 2015 (edited) The interior is done. Nothing elaborate here - I used the custom tuck & roll from the kit and added some seat belts. Maybe I should add a tachometer - on the dash or column? Edited August 29, 2015 by RancheroSteve
RancheroSteve Posted September 2, 2015 Author Posted September 2, 2015 The engine is about done and ready to install. I'll add the fan and air cleaners and hook up the coil wire after it's in. Again, pretty much straight out of the box, with some plug wires added. Painted the same blue as the body. Thanks for looking!
RancheroSteve Posted September 21, 2015 Author Posted September 21, 2015 (edited) Getting closer - I got the engine in and finished up the engine compartment: And got the trim foiled: Edited September 21, 2015 by RancheroSteve
Reeves Racing Posted October 1, 2015 Posted October 1, 2015 Great project. Nice work too, very crisp and clean.
RancheroSteve Posted October 4, 2015 Author Posted October 4, 2015 Finished! See "Under Glass" topic: http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/topic/106437-1962-pontiac-el-ponchomino/
