JTalmage Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 The amount of friction/drag would probably suck.... but I need that thing!
Joe Handley Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 Cage the gears like at the sprocket and I can see some advantages to it.
Snake45 Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 Didn't I see that or something like it on American Pickers once?
Harry P. Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 You only get one speed (one gear ratio) that way. Seems pretty useless to me...
bismarck Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 Man, that bike would be a bear on a hill climb. Still neat though.
Snake45 Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 Man, that bike would be a bear on a hill climb. So was my old single-gear chain Sears bike.
bismarck Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 I just finished restoring an old english 3 speed. Even with only 3 gears in an internal hub, those things are temperamental. Finding good usable or rebuildable parts for those bikes is getting harder by the day.
Joe Handley Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 You only get one speed (one gear ratio) that way. Seems pretty useless to me...Would work for a simple single speed cruiser bike though.
Greg Myers Posted July 25, 2015 Author Posted July 25, 2015 I road a bike delivering mail for the USPS for many years, it's all in selecting the best gear ratio set for what you're doing.
Ace-Garageguy Posted October 3, 2015 Posted October 3, 2015 It's like a Shay bicycle! David G. Pretty good. You must be a train guy too. Betcha most people are not going to get the reference.
David G. Posted October 4, 2015 Posted October 4, 2015 Pretty good. You must be a train guy too. Betcha most people are not going to get the reference. I am. I've been into model railroading off and on for nearly 40 years.
disabled modeler Posted October 5, 2015 Posted October 5, 2015 Looks nice David. The bike is wild looking too.
David G. Posted October 26, 2015 Posted October 26, 2015 Looks nice David. The bike is wild looking too. Thanks Mark.David G.
Custom Mike Posted October 27, 2015 Posted October 27, 2015 You only get one speed (one gear ratio) that way. Seems pretty useless to me... Harry, a useless single speed (42/17 gearing) 24" BMX bike propelled me to a State Championship back in '87, I have no use for multiple gears to this day. More moving parts means more things I have to keep adjusted!
426-Hemi Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 -DANG! a 2 cylinder Shay "Side-winder"!!!!! I bet that be a rough one on the hill, but dang you'd pull anything with the movement......
