You've all heard about it.  VW cheats!....on emission testing for their Diesel motors.

This stinks in my opinion.  I've always been a VW fan, especially the Golf.

I'll add, the German Govt. is in an uproar.  The German Industrial Complex is in an uproar.

Is the name "Made in Germany" endangered?

Personally, I find that it's sad news that such a major Auto player is so easily called out.

VW's problems are just beginning. Wait until the lawsuits start pouring in.

Can't say I feel sorry for them, though. A completely self-inflicted wound. A shame.

And in these situations small innocent people get hurt.   Average workers who have their savings and pensions invested in their employer, retired people depending on their stocks....

I once worked for a company that got caught fudging financial records... and they paid for it by laying off 2000 employees. Nothing like losing your job at the same time the stock and your 401K hit bottom!

I wonder if that VW Boss stepped down with his "golden parachute" fully deployed...

I hope they sack the other people that were involved in such a risky decision.

I'm guessing the independent emissions testing companies will be real busy testing all the other cars out there...I expect more fallout to be seen from other companies, and some well proven bragging also.

Truth is that VW Boss probably didn't know any of it.  But he's the captain of the ship and responsible for everything under him.

and yes, they will go through the halls with lit torches.  Not a good time to work at Volkswagen!

The talk here in Germany is that all German big name companies will suffer from this.  The chief of Dept. of Transportation (a Bavarian, read BMW Friend) was the first to stir up trouble and went knocking on VW's door with threat of major shakedown from the Govt.  Now, Press say he knew about it and didn't speak up!

This is huge dilemma.  VW stocks are way down and the losses are in the double billions.

No, this is not a good time to work at VW.  But also, Audi and Porsche among others, are run by VW.  The Boss is a Professor of Physics and a celebrated Engineer.  Current German Autos. Audi and VW for instance, have quality control features that have his name on them.  The man is not just a Manager.  I can't really imagine this mess is his doing.

Here in Germany, VW is something.  This is like "the" household brand number one.  The only car that really has nothing to say about your financial or social status.  You can drive up to the Opera in a Golf, or to the welfare office.  A Golf is a Golf, period.  The wife of the CEO Mercedes Benz drives a Golf.

This is big trouble for lots of folks.

I guess once again, a bunch of the "little people" will be adversely affected by a "management" decision that should have been tossed out the window as soon as it was mentioned.

I have to guess that mid level management knew about this and helped hide it.

unfortunately, this is a storm that the EU will have a hard time weathering since it appears that Germany was one of their anchors.

Seems to be ALOT of that going around in the business world on this side of the pond too... 3 bosses for every worker just to make sure he or she does they're job efficiently ........What a joke....

LOL.  Funny stuff here.

Right at this moment I'm watching a political talk show with big time experts who know the German Automobile Industry very well.  Journalists who've tried for decades to get behind the "system", ecological experts and lawyers who've in the past defended VW Managers.  Only one politician is present, a Green Party rowdy.

One of the main guests is the gentleman who developed the testing platform for the US folks who first reported the VW dilemma.  He says, it's all big time BS, VW has been cheating for years.  He warned them years ago.  He warned the German Gov't. years ago.  No go. In the meantime 11 million cars are reportedly cheating with the tests.

Audi too!

Here is how the software works;  The only time these diesel motors are officially tested are in a controlled environment!  Test labs.  The software in each car can tell when test conditions prevail, as the car does not move.  With this feedback, the software reduces the performance (horsepower) of the motor so that it only has a fraction of the power.  The emissions are then less, so the motor appears to be "clean".  As soon as this car is out on the road, these values jump immensely!

A national defense lawyer, also from the "political arena" of the state where the VW Industry has it's HQ (the state has a 20% win advantage from VW!) says of course the Boss who stepped down knew everything.  VW is one of the very few who have almost a vassal hierarchy.   The big bosses do not tolerate any questions from their Managers.  either you do as we say or you're fired!

This does not leave any German citizen cold.  VW is pride and joy.  The country is collectively puking about this news!

Unbelievable!  Cheating like crazy.

OK, the VW Diesel motors delivered to the US are the same as here in Europe.  But, the software is different!  Since you can't drive fast in the US, the cars have a software that is more restricted than in Europe.  This means, in Germany we can drive on the Autobahns as fast as the car can go in lots of areas.  This car has to be restricted a lot in the test labs.  In the US, the cars aren't allowed to drive as fast, hence the software is more negligent, meaning lenient.  Outside of the "test environment", the average Diesel motor has emissions from 7-15 times more than legally allowed, in some cases as much as 40 times the legal value.

This is a known fact among Gov't officials in Germany.  1/6 of the German workers are on an "automotive type" payroll.  Go figure.

The Gov't knows about cheating, but keeps quiet.

Called the dealer.  Asked if they'd buy back a TDI for what was paid for it.  They asked not to call back for a few years.

Imagine that.
