69NovaYenko Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 (edited) I aware that during the mid to late 60ties Mopar applied Cosmoline was applied to leaf springs and various suspension parts to prevent rust. I want to simulate the Cosmoline that was applied to these suspension parts. Any suggestions on what paint color could be used to simulate this petroleum based rust preventive gel. Also was this a Moper thing are was it a common practice with all car manufacturers during that era. And, approximately when did the practice of applying this petroleum based rust preventive gel begin and end. Edited October 28, 2015 by 69NovaYenko
Mike Chernecki Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Try some Testors Enamel Flat Rubber, I have a very old bottle and it has a brown tar like tint to it. It may do what you need or at least a starting point to mix something.
Ace-Garageguy Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 The cosmoline I'm familiar with, applied to new cars before shipment (particularly new cars coming by sea) was a yellowish-brownish concoction looking exactly like this goop on the underside of a Porsche. We removed it with mineral-spirit-based solvents.
Custom Mike Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 I did a '68 Satellite years ago and tried to find something to resemble Cosmoline, not perfect (Too metallic and glossy), but with some flat clear it might work. The color is Citadel Colors Burnished Gold.
69NovaYenko Posted October 28, 2015 Author Posted October 28, 2015 Yep Ace-GarageGuy thats the stuff I`m talking about.
Casey Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Testors gold and steel in the little 1/3 ounce glass bottles will get you close, and if you can add a little flat clear to knock down the sheen, even better.
SfanGoch Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Metalizer Brass and a coat of clear flat tinted with flat brown works.
69NovaYenko Posted October 31, 2015 Author Posted October 31, 2015 Thanks for the suggestions everyone.
