Exotics_Builder Posted December 13, 2015 Posted December 13, 2015 A couple of years back before IHOBBY I queried Revell on doing new tools on such cars as the 65 GTO, 68 Camaro, etc. Basically, the comment was AMT had pretty much cornered that market and not much benefit was perceived for them to do a new tool. I hope they'll change their minds, as it seems AMT doing an upgrade is likely a long way off, if ever.
Skip Posted December 13, 2015 Posted December 13, 2015 (edited) I'd think a new-tool '65 GTO should be high on some kitmaker's possibilities list--Revell, most likely, but maybe Moebius. It's such an iconic musclecar, even more so than the '64. Revell could use their '66 chassis, engine, and related parts.I'd buy several, makes me all nostalgic. Totally disappointed with the latest AMT reissue, I never had the original issue so I thought it was as bad as the later reissue. Please someone we'd love to see a proper '65 Goat! This would be a great multiple use tooling expenditure as well, the '65 Chevelle, Skylark, Olds used the same platform and basic interior bucket.@ 70JudgeMan - Andy, That's probably the closest to the color I've ever seen, could have been a special order coded GTO. Pretty much anything was possible with the right dealer back then. Edited December 13, 2015 by Skip add reply

I don't much fancy paying the ridiculous prices that I've seen on some of these early GTO kits, but may end up having to do exactly that.
Roadrunner Posted December 14, 2015 Author Posted December 14, 2015 Thanks so much for all the input, fellas, I really appreciate it. It's odd, but I don't even remember building that kit when I was a kid, but I know for sure that's my box from ages ago. I built dozens and dozens of cars when I was a kid, and kept most (but not all) of the boxes for many years.Question: What would a reasonable amount be to pay for one of these early versions? I saw one recently on feebay for $170 plus, but that seems too steep, especially since I intend to build it.

I've seen a couple at swap meets for a little less (100-125), but content was iffy, missing parts or started.
Snake45 Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 Be advised that Welly makes a pretty nice, reasonably priced 1/25-ish '65 GTO diecast that's AT LEAST as accurate as the AMT kit. I have two of them, one in gold and one in turquoise, and they look pretty good. I don't think I paid over $10-$12 for either one of them.https://www.google.com/search?q=welly+65+GTO&biw=1253&bih=640&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiTqev6wtzJAhXG4SYKHS30C0EQ_AUIBigB
Can-Con Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 I have a front bumper/headlight unit coming from Modelhaus for mine. Might even use the underhood stuff and chassis from the Polar Lights '64 kit. Also have a PE set from MCG for emblems and a bottle of Tiger Gold coming from ScaleFinished. Yea, I've been thinking about a build of this kit for a while. Wish I had got one of the resin promo copies from Missing Link when they were doing them though.

Still,...

The Modelhaus front end is very good and a variety of chasses can fit under the AMT body with a little work. My preference is the Revell Chevelle (Z-16) chassis or the 66 GTO, There are other options, like the PL 64 mentioned.

I'll probably just grab a later kit, and see if I can make it work,... at least they're cheap.

If you are wanting to build stock, an older kit with custom parts missing may be the ticket. Otherwise, think newer version and Modelhaus front grill/headlamp assembly is a good, cost effective alternative.

I'm already looking into the possibility of one of the newer kits, thanks to a couple of the fine folks here.
ChrisBcritter Posted December 16, 2015 Posted December 16, 2015 One thing to watch out for: the taillight lenses. Not interchangeable left to right. I've seen quite a few old builtups with the lenses installed upside down, tapering in the wrong direction.
