cobraman Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 (edited) Let me begin by saying that in over 50 years of model building I have never built a Nascar style model that I can remember. I do like the older ones ( stock cars ) but don't care for the newer ones. Anyway, as I like to sometimes build something different for myself I threw this one into the mix. I am sure when done it will probably sort of resemble what it is supposed to be and no where as good as you fellows build them. So far I have found the kit to be a pain. Could be more me than the kit. : ) It features some black parts which I never have been fond of in any kit. Although the body is pretty nice I found many parts bent or warped and there is a ton of clean up that needs to be done. Edited January 14, 2016 by cobraman updated and done
oldcarfan Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 I bought this kit not long ago. I'll be following, thanks for the pictures!
disabled modeler Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 Ray... I have the factory stock issued one a build up needing parts...really wish they could have brought back the factory stock parts in the one issue of the car. I have the original MPC version of this kit still sealed from the 70s it dose not have them ether from what I hear...bummer.
cobraman Posted January 11, 2016 Author Posted January 11, 2016 I bought the stock version of this car many years ago to do a replica of the car my BIL had at the time. He still has it to this day.

cobraman Posted January 11, 2016 Author Posted January 11, 2016 My BIL bought his used. Black on black. White bumblebee type of stripe. Had a 429 if I remember right. What a car !
afx Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 (edited) I built an original kit a few years back. Used a Polar Lights Torino chassis with a 429. Looking forward to see what you do with your build Ray. Edited January 11, 2016 by afx
slusher Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 Great work so far Ray. I have not opened mine yet so i could use your info on any problems with the kit. Looking forward to more...

My dads had a 429ci and 4 speed...thing was wicked.! With the factory stock builder I need parts for I want to build it into a replica of his old one...I loved that car.
cobraman Posted January 12, 2016 Author Posted January 12, 2016 Hey Carl. What I found with this kit may be just mine I don't know or maybe me. I found some parts bent or warped. Some parts do not fit well. Parts need a lot of clean up and if you don't modify the front track the tires will stick out too far. Ya know, just typical model stuff you run into from time to time. This one is just for some reason giving me fits. Just had to walk away from it so I wouldn't turn it into an airplane. : ) Will let it just sit for awhile as I decide to how best fix the tire issue.
cobraman Posted January 12, 2016 Author Posted January 12, 2016 Carl, another heads up ! While I was thinking about the best way to solve the wheel problem I decided to tackle the decals. They split into pieces like decals do sometimes. The decals will need to be coated beforehand to save yourself that headache. Good luck with yours. I may not even finish mine.

I have had that same problem with new kit decals lately too...What do you coat them with beforehand...?

I have been worried about the decals and how good the quality was. I think i need to open my kit....
cobraman Posted January 13, 2016 Author Posted January 13, 2016 I coated my decals with Microscale liquid decal film. Just remember if you do that you will then have to trim the decals close to the edge. I apply with a clean wide brush.
disabled modeler Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Thanks Ray....I have a few that are too messed up to use that came with new kits I got....some things are not what they are without the decals for them.
cobraman Posted January 14, 2016 Author Posted January 14, 2016 I don't think I was ever so happy to finish a model kit. Many problems with this kit but some could have been of my own making. Car was built stock but fought me throughout. Turned out better than I thought it would. Not to say it's very good but it is done. The coating I used to save the poor decals seemed to discolor them some. Oh well, on to the next one !
disabled modeler Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 Ray....That is nice.... Looks just like the one my dads did when the old MPC kit was new he built but cleaner...age shows on his now.
bbowser Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 I like it. Always good to see builds from this era of NASCAR. You can take what you learned from this one to the next
