Harry P. Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 Back when Danbury Mint was still in the model car business, I was a big fan... and a good customer. Because of that, I used to get a lot of DM brochures in the mail... seemed like I got one one every week or so. I saved them all–not sure why exactly, but I did. They were all crammed into a bookcase shelf. So I finally decided I had to do something about that pile of brochures. I bought a few three-ring binders and some clear plastic 8x10 sleeves at Hobby Lobby, and turned a messy pile of mail into a nice, neat collection. Should have done it years ago...
Roadrunner Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 Looks good, Harry. I'm intending to do the same for my model car decals. Once a model is finished, all of the decals will go into heavy plastic sleeves (that I "liberated" from and old workplace).
lordairgtar Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 Love the Packard Hawk brochure. They sure knew how to get you hooked with those beautiful adverts. I think they are worth saving.

Great job Harry, I didn't save the brochures and flyers but I wish that I had bought more Danbury & Franklins.
Tom Geiger Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 Great job Harry! I used to get all those Franklin / Danbury brochures in the mail once I bought a car from each. I used to think they spent more sending me mailings than I spent on their vehicles! I saved them all in a folder in my car brochure catalog. At this point the Danbury catalogs are a finite set, they're not making them any more so you could put together a complete collection! I dunno Harry... maybe it's getting older but I've been on a major sorting binge lately. I've been organizing collections that have just been in boxes for years suddenly! Kevin mentioned sorting decals. Here's my solution. This is a stamp collectors stock book album. It has clear plastic strips the height of a stamp on each page. The stamps sit under these, hanging out at the top. I was sorting my stamp collection into these and thought "why not decals?" Same requirements to keeping them viewable, flat and dry. This book is a bit under $10 at Hobby Lobby if you use the 40% off coupon. It's one aisle away from the model cars.
traditional Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 Geez, Harry, That's a great idea. I also have a bunch of them that I don't want to throw out but they're just crammed into one corner of a bookshelf in my toy-room.......something productive to do on a rainy day.
Dragline Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 Not only are they a great resource of when and where they will also have future value. Keeping them "mint" is an excellent idea.
Greg Myers Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 a few three-ring binders ? You must of had quite a few. Really nice solution.
Roadrunner Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 I like it, Tom. My idea is just a sheet of paper in the middle of the sleeve, allowing for viewing decals on both sides of one insert.
Dragline Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 If you guys saw the way I treat my comic book/magazine collection you'd know what obsession to archive truly means. I may have more just in archival material than some have into the actual books in their collections. And while it is a large collection it doesn't go unloved. I take boxes out and read valuable books all the time. it's just how you treat them and replace them back in their boxes. My point being nothing is too good for something you care for and plan on keeping, either for yourself or future generations. We are merely caretakers after all.

Yeah, I just got tired of having them all crammed into a bookshelf in a giant messy pile. Much nicer this way...

louie Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 It is a good idea Harry! i been collecting orig muscle car ads since the mid '80's & do the same thing. also collect auto motive adds too (gas, tires, parts, etc) my binders are are not in as good as shape from sitting in the shop remember this line of adds from plymouth, no cars pictured but still one of the coolest adds made That is so awesome. I really like this idea. My friend does the same and I've always been a fan of saving all of the car ads. Good stuff. Thank you. Jeff

Harry P. Posted March 11, 2016 Author Posted March 11, 2016 Don't the decals stick to the plastic sleeves? That's what would worry me.
Tom Geiger Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 Don't the decals stick to the plastic sleeves?Nope. That's all archive quality glassine. People store stamps worth thousands of dollars in these.
Harry P. Posted March 11, 2016 Author Posted March 11, 2016 Well, you didn't say glassine... we thought they were plastic sleeves.
crazyjim Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 On my buy list for the next trip to Hobby Lobby.
