Dave Ambrose Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 (edited) The People's Republic of California mandated changes in our thinner content a few years ago, and the new stuff is OK for cleaning (air) brushes, but doesn't work nearly as well for thinning paint any more.I don't think the change was nation-wide, but I don't know. Can I get a couple of people in Arizona and Nevada to go into Home Depot or Lowes, look at the cans, and post the ingredients? Thanks! Edited March 9, 2016 by Dave Ambrose
SfanGoch Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 The stuff in New York still has acetone, MEK and other high VOC goodies, which are all banned Kalifornia, to enhance your paint thinning experience. Have you considered moving out of that loony bin?

Have you considered moving out of that loony bin?We ponder the possibility every now and then, but this house is almost paid off, and my grandson is 30 minutes away. I think we'll be staying put. Thanks for the info. I now know that the ban wasn't nationwide. Perhaps a foray to AZ, NV, or UT is in order?
SfanGoch Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 I just checked out the label on a bottle of Testors Lacquer Thinner and Brush Cleaner. It contains "alcohols (denatured and isopropyl), toluene and ethyl acetate. The label has a warning indicating that it's known to the state of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. I've never seen a pregnant model kit. Is this lacquer thinner, in a reformulated, useless "green" version, available in Cloud-Cuckoo Land?
Harry P. Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 ...The label has a warning indicating that it's known to the state of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm... It's not known to anyone else?
Dave Ambrose Posted March 9, 2016 Author Posted March 9, 2016 It's not known to anyone else? There's a CA proposition that required labeling everything that might cause cancer of birth defects. Most everything except food carries that "Prop. 65" warning.
drummerdad Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 I think I have seen C.A. glue with a warning for California. It causes birth defects in pregnant women. I know furniture, and upholstery need special burn certifications to be legal in California also.

I know furniture, and upholstery need special burn certifications to be legal in California also. When you go into Home Depot here they have to put Prop 65 warning labels on lumber... not just the treated stuff either, plain old 2x4s are plotting against us. I feel sorry for those of you whose state doesn't care about them.
1972coronet Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 As alife-long resident of the Golden (Showers) State : I think that the Republick of Kalifornia has bigger fish to fry vis-a-vis Porter Ranch ...That last Governor we had ---what's his name again ? Arnold Poopants ?---- is the architect behind the banning of cleaners that actually work . How about the 100% wortless brake cleaner ? Carburetor cleaner ? Parts wash ? Then there's the unavailable high gloss clear coats that many new cars have ; one can get the base / colour coat , but no-go on the clear (!!!!!). My brother-in-law goes to Nevada or Arizona to get the real stuff .BTW , that stupid "Prop 65" garbage has been around since 1986 .

Dave Ambrose Posted March 10, 2016 Author Posted March 10, 2016 Oh, So You're a Demented Genus too huh? Those who know me well and still admit it will agree with that characterization.
russosborne Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 I don't know if they still exist, but they used to have booths at the entrance to the state to make sure you didn't carry fruit in or out.Pretty soon there will be guards there checking for things like thinner and paint.Couldn't pay me enough to move there.Russ
