AC Norton Posted April 5, 2016 Posted April 5, 2016 I just started building my jo-han 69 amx that I bought in January of 1977 and the chrome bumpers look better than a brand new kit!! ....Johan quality in general was terrific until the later 80s era....their chrome, plastic, and overall sharpness was hard to beat. back from 1968 when I started building and collecting models, Johan kits were always my favorite because of subject matter, and the quality of their products. I think much of todays hoopla regarding the quality of many kits doesn't come close to those classics from Johan.....the Ace.....
Snake45 Posted April 5, 2016 Posted April 5, 2016 On the other hand, I opened a sealed JoHan AMX and found no rear bumper at all. Ended up trading something with a guy in, IIRC, Finland to get one.It has very little chrome on it, but that's okay because I'm going to do the car in either Big Bad Green or BB Orange anyway, which had body-colored bumpers.
StevenGuthmiller Posted April 5, 2016 Posted April 5, 2016 Just like every other kit manufacturer, Johan was all over the map with their chrome quality. In general, as Ace stated, the early stuff was much better than the later.I've had Johan kits that had just as much of the base plastic showing as chrome. On the other hand, like in the case of an original '65 Plymouth Fury kit that I have, the chrome is as good or better than any modern kit, & it's 50 years old! Steve

SteveYeah, I have an original annual '66 Marlin whose chrome is breathtaking. And I think it's pretty good on my annual '66 Rambler Rogue, too.
SfanGoch Posted April 6, 2016 Posted April 6, 2016 I have two first issue Chrysler Turbine kits and the chrome is the best I've ever seen. I also have a 1970s issue of the same kit and the chrome is absolute dreck.

And in contrast, I recently traded a USA Oldies '66 Marlin that the chrome was so thin on, you could almost see through it! Steve
keyser Posted April 6, 2016 Posted April 6, 2016 The old chrome is amazing, early issue 31 Cadillacs are blinding. When the older kits need rechroming due to whatever reason, it's a bear to get all the clear coat off the pieces too. Probably why it holds up so nicely.
sjordan2 Posted April 6, 2016 Posted April 6, 2016 (edited) I have a couple of first issues of Johan's Gold Cup kit of the Mercedes 500K Special Roadster Limousine, which has outstanding chrome, even perfectly done on the excellent wire wheels. The reissue (not identified as Gold Cup) is terrible, with incomplete chrome coverage over red plastic, and lots of flash. Edited April 6, 2016 by sjordan2
l88 chevelle Posted April 7, 2016 Author Posted April 7, 2016 amazing,50 year old chrome that still looks great
StevenGuthmiller Posted April 7, 2016 Posted April 7, 2016 amazing,50 year old chrome that still looks great This is the chrome tree from my '65 Fury kit. Steve
gtx6970 Posted April 7, 2016 Posted April 7, 2016 Steve, old buddy.any chance I can talk you out of the oval air cleaner and the chrome fender well headers off that tree
StevenGuthmiller Posted April 7, 2016 Posted April 7, 2016 Steve, old buddy.any chance I can talk you out of the oval air cleaner and the chrome fender well headers off that treeI'll bet that we could work out something with the headers anyway.I'll quite possibly be using the air cleaner when I build it, but I doubt that I'll use the headers.I'll bet that I have a couple more sets of these too.My guess is the '66 & '67 Fury kits that I have include them as well. Steve

Stevejust as an FYI, the air cleaner is for crossram Hemi only . Which obviously the Fury was never avail with . I have a few sets of the fender well headers but none are chrome . They might be something I need later on down the road
