Who said "guide"? I said help to make kids aware there's something more than sitting in front of an electronic pacifier.

Not our job to make kids "aware" of anything. Every generation has to make those decisions on their own.

I have three kids, all adults now. They all have their own interests. They were perfectly capable of making their own decisions... as was I. ;)

Question: why do so many of you younger guys have to attack anybody who makes a comparison between the way things are NOW and the way things were before?

Question: why do so many of you older guys have to attack anybody who makes a comparison between the way things were then and the way things are now?

Ace, please note that is not say aimed at you directly, and I have zero issues with you, and respect your knowledge that you have,

Good question. Nothing to learn, nothing allowed but attaboys. Sounds like a complete and utter waste of time. That's just MY 2 pence.

You would be 100% correct , those groups are complete waste of time and are doing nothing to help people become better builders, like I replied to Harry, I dont bother or waste my time in those groups.

And just because a few groups are like that, doenst mean all groups are like that,  most of the groups I am in are none American, as those are the groups that believe in everyone is a winner.

This is turning into a perfect example of what I was mentioning earlier...people can't have a discussion without getting their panties in a bunch.

It would be nice if everybody could just kinda enjoy where we are TODAY. Some new stuff is great, and some old stuff is pretty damm fine too.

I kinda try to stay abreast of what's happening and what's new, but I have a real fondness for some things I grew up with AND for some things that are WAY before my own time.

EVERYTHING is accessible to everyone these days, and to simply pick NOW as having the best of everything just because it IS now...well, that really limits what you have to choose from, and certainly limits the perspective you use to understand the world you live in.

because it's the same tired argument over and over again...wallowing in the past and saying everything was better then.  It wasn't.  Too many people look at the past w/ rose colored glasses and don't see how dreadful it was. I don't long for the world of 1980 from when I was a kid...I like living in the here and now.

I dont think we are at that point just yet.

Just to clarify, who exactly is "living in the past?" Just because someone prefers old cars to new, or enjoys a thing or two from 50 years ago doesn't exactly mean they're "living in the past," and nobody's said "everything was better then." You're right, many, many things are better these days than they used to be, but there are also tons of things that are far worse.

Being honest, that is pretty spot on and I agree with everything you said, and nothing really needs to be added.

And everything isn't better NOW just because we have more tech toys, either. There are some things that WERE most definitely better in the past, and there are some things that are most definitely better NOW.

NO time is or ever was perfect, yet, and to pretend otherwise is limiting and short-sighted.

'living in the past' are the people that are constantly dissing anything modern, always saying cars or whatever were better in 1960 or whenever, living w/ their B&W tvs etc.  The anti-modernity crowd, I've met plenty of them....it's a waste of time to try and reason with them...they are hopeless...people stuck at some particular point in their past (or someone else's past era) that haven't advanced.  The irony of it is, alot of them are spewing their drivel on the internet, using modern techology that wasn't available in their ideal era.

My father did model cars and trains, then went on to do stuff with real cars. He still builds trains (thousands of dollars worth) and I bought him a Tamiya V8 Opel kit last year.

He bought me my first model, ech... maybe when I was six? Seven? We built it together, obviously. Twelvish years seems so far away.

This was before the "participation awards" thing. I missed that by a few years. Thank god I missed Common Core and standards-based by a year. I like a little return on my work, though - don't we all?

Not to say I don't like criticism. I need a little. However, lately I've been building for me and haven't been posting anything I've been working on, mostly because I know I'm not doing carb linkages, I know I'm not doing distributor wiring, helll, sometimes I don't even put shocks in some of my models. I build models because I'm a dreamer. That's why I play Gran Turismo, or spend hours driving in GTA V - cars give me a rush. I'm dreaming now, dreaming to the future when I'll be financially stable enough to own every model I've built in 1:1 form.

Basically, if any of us younger people want to build models, we will. I think I'm just reiterating that from others who have scribed posts before me, but it needs to be said.

And don't sniff the glue.

...Just as hopeless as trying to "reason" with people who have little historical perspective gained from first-hand living it, and who insist that everything is better today because it's all computer-controlled.;)

Lol! Well, you have to take things in the context in which they are offered. For instance, most of the time when people say classic cars are "better" they're speaking from a styling and ease of ownership standpoint. It really can't be argued that modern cars are safer, more comfortable, etc, but they're also almost all plain, boring looking appliances that simply don't "do it" for many people, they're overly complicated to work on, and insanely expensive. And when's the last time you saw honestly someone living with a black and white TV because they just refuse to get a new one for any reason other than cost?

Yeah, ironically, one thing tech is really really good for is drivel spewing...no matter what generation is doing it. :D

I feel the same way for the most part, as I have grown very tired hearing, or reading that old cars are better than new cars, having an outhouse was better than having indoor plumbing, B&W TV was better than color HD TV's, you get my point,  well, my point that I am trying to make is that every generation has its good and its bad, and its my opinion that no one generation is better than the next.

Every generation thinks that their generation was the best. It's just human nature.

Of course, and thats never going to change................................ tell we have cyborgs or androids that can be programed not to think that way:lol:

I was joking about the B&W TVs, but I'm sure there are some freaks out there using them w/ rabbit ears to get the Dumont Channel from 1951 or whatever.   I like old cars, see them plenty often enough at car shows and events, but I certainly wouldn't want to drive one with any regularity. I like the reliability, safetyand creature comforts (cup holders!) of cars from the 21st century...

I'm NOT picking on you and I have absolutely NO quarrel with anyone here, but I'm just curious...you guys have actually encountered folks who prefer carping in a hole and watching fuzzy B&W TV? Really?

Well, the Amish don't have electricity or indoor plumbing (I assume)...now they are really living in the past, about 300 years ago...

I know its going to shock many, but even I like older cars too, I respect them for what they are , and there even some that I would love to own, but I also love new(er) cars even more, as thats what I am use too, I was born in 80, so I have no connection to anything really before the 90's.  I have to agree, while I am sure its fun to drive them, for everyday use, I will stick with something from the last 20 years.

Hell...it's MY generation that made such a mess of things. They're the ones who started selling the American dream off piece by piece to the highest bidder, just to line their own pockets. It sure wasn't the millennials who dug us into this hole.

I was wondering about them. Probably even older than us, or Airplane Guys.

And the stamp guys are even older!  I tried two different stamp clubs.   I was the only person there not retired!

I have no reply to your question beside I am glad I was not drinking something when I read it,  I really did laugh out loud
