My wife gave me the option of either going to a nephew's high school graduation tomorrow, or attending the NNL North show in Bloomington MN.

I probably would not be considering going to the show if it were not for being given this "out" by the boss. ;)

Anyone here going?

And being a total rookie when it comes to shows, is there anything I need to know before making the trip?

I guess it only makes sense to bring along a couple of builds if I go.

Do I just enter them in the show when I get to the venue?

This is kind of a last second thing for me, so I don't have a lot of time to prepare.

Any info would be appreciated.

Sounds like you've got it .. just remember your camera for all us too far away to go!!  :D

No doubt. Photos are always good. Given the quality of the work done by Steve, he'll probably bring home several awards.

By the way, if you get this in time. Members of MCCM (Model a Car Club of Minnesota) are meeting at 8 am for breakfast at the Perkins restaurant on France Ave., just noth of 494, in Edina. I'm sure you'd be welcome to join us.

Oh! P.S. Getting in is not a problem over all. You'll have to wait in line at first. But beyond that, it's pretty easy signing up, getting in, and displaying your models. The only other advice. Bring money. There are normally some pretty good vendors there, with some fun stuff to browse and buy..

A bit late to the party here, and no I cannot come!  I went to the MidAtlantic NNL in Maryland yesterday and had a great time as always!

When attending any show, always bring along a couple of your recent builds.  It's fun to show people your work, and folks will recognize them from the board and connect with you. It's a way to meet people you know from the boards.  Hope you have a great time!

Thanks Scott!

I won't make breakfast, but I'll be at the show.

I have six kits I'll bring along, so most likely you'll recognize some of them.

Hopefully they'll make the trip intact!

I hope to see you there.

It'll be good to possibly meet a couple of guys from the forum. :)

Just got back from the NNL North Show. Got to meet Steve Guthmiller in person. And see some of his models. First, Steve is a very nice guy. Very friendly and personable. His models? They are better than what you can see in the pictures posted here. He is a top notch modeler. So good, he won two major awards at the show. I'll let him tell you about that. He is also very humble about model building abilities. He's a lot better modeler than he thinks he is. Everybody who saw his models were blown away.

Beside meeting Steve, I had a great time at the show. Turn out was better than last year. So there were a lot of models to look at. I brought two 1/2 models. I say two and 1/2 because my '40 Willys Curly's Gasser and the trailer it sat on, we're counted as one model. Even though they were built from different kits, at different times. But, I was okay with that. The other model was a '75 AMT Ford van used as a tow vehicle. Both the van and the trailer used Three Stooges decals that came with the Stooges '40 sedan delivery. I won no awards for my models. But, I didn't expect to. My models are only okay. I like them. And so did a few other people from what I was told. And that makes me happy. So I am very please with that.

I bought two kits. Nothing real special. But, I got them at very good prices. In fact I thought the vendors prices at the show were pretty reasonable. Better than what I normally see on places like eBay. But, there was nothing I really needed. So I saved a few bucks. I also bought a few raffle tickets for models that were being raffled off. I got skunked there. But again, of the models being raffled off, there was nothing I really had my heart set on. So that was okay too.

So in general, I had a great time. Again, saw a lot of nice models. BS's with a lot of good friends. Hopefully made a new friend beyond blogging here, with Steve. And I'm looking forward to next year's show. What more can one ask for? Another good NNL North. I hope others out here will join us next year.

Thank you so much Scott!

You & all the other guys from the club really made me feel comfortable in an unfamiliar environment & I am extremely grateful!

I really had a good time & to be honest, I was just a little floored by winning anything given the caliber of some of the competition.

I really had no illusions of winning anything,

I just thought it might be an interesting experience.

Well, it was interesting, & very rewarding at the same time.

I never imagined that I'd meet so many people so willing to help & offer so many kind words.

I literally felt myself blushing a few times from all of the complimentary remarks!

It's not something that I am used to.

Be sure to send a big thank you to all of the guys Scott.

They really made me feel at home! :D

I also want to send a big shout out the the guys from the Winnipeg Model Car Club who somehow saw fit to award me with the beautiful "Best Road Car" trophy!

Believe me, it was utterly unexpected!

And if there was any way possible, I'd like to thank each & every one of the show goers who voted for my '62 Sunliner as one of the 10 peoples choice awards!

It was also a huge honor!

Believe it or not, I'm looking forward to returning next year.

Not so much for looking for more awards, but just to reconnect with the many new friends whom I met today.

That plus the fact that next years theme will be "Fins"!

How could I possibly pass that up?!

Congrats Steve, and glad that you enjoyed the NNL North, a show I'd like to see but I don't care for riding in the car for long periods of time anymore. The guys from Winnipeg are great guys as they have attended the Milwaukee NNL a few times and they are excellent builders.

Will be making my first trip to the show. Can't wait.

allis200 did you make the show too? Sorry I didn't get a chance to meet you. Or did I? I talked to a lot of people I didn't know. What did you bring? Did you win anything? Did you feel welcome like Steve did? I sure hope so. Next time we'll have to figure out a way to for meet.

I was thinking the same thing Scott.

it was such a whirlwind of new faces & names for me that I'm not sure who I met!

Plus the fact that I'm a complete failure when it comes to remembering names! :P

I got there before noon. Did not bring anything, stuff not good enough for that. Talked to a couple people including the big rig guy(did not know names  sorry) and the show person finding models for Model Car magazine. And of course Ralph from Ralph's models.   Fun show. Won the 1 ton dually in the raffle after I just bought one. That's okay as I have plans for both.

Hey, next time bring something. It may not be as good as others. But, that's not the point. If you saw my Three Stooges drag team set up, you knew it was not going to win anything. Still, I was surprised by how many people liked it, and thought it was cool. And I didn't get the impression they were just saying that to be nice either. Sometimes we are our own harshest critics. Steve didn't think his models were all that good either. Everybody else thought differently. Bring some models. Let us see what you can do. You might be surprised by what we think.

Exactly!

Absolutely no reason to be self conscience about your abilities.

The builds there pretty much ran the gamut of skill levels.

I heard no criticisms of any kind.

Just a lot of great people who understand that building is a learning curve that takes time to perfect.

I saw a lot of really fantastic builds that I thought looked much better than anything I had to offer, & yet I did quite well in the award department.

Correct me if I'm wrong Scott, but I believe that the NNL events are "un-judged" events anyway & any awards given are presented by individual clubs on their own behalf, and the peoples choice awards recipients are selected by the participants.

So in short, it's not really meant to be a competition, it's more of a gathering of enthusiasts to show their work to one & other.

Personally, I enjoyed seeing everyone's wares, regardless of skill level.

Congratulations Steve!

You can be sure that absolutely no-one on this board will be surprised at your awards.

And if next year has a "fins" theme you'd better make some more room on the shelf. Well done!

Glad I got the chance to meet you Steve. Wish I knew more forum members on sight so I could say hello.

It was a busy room for sure, I'll see if I can post some pics in the next couple days. I neglected to notice one of my entries was singled out for magazine pics. How stupid. Since I'm not a national caliber builder, getting in the mags is my win. Would've been my 4th straight year, but so be it.

Hi Mike!

It was great to meet you too!

I only wish I could remember half of the other guys I met! :)

As I said, it was such a whirlwind of new names & faces, it was very difficult to keep everyone straight.

But I do want to thank Scott again for kind of taking me under his wing & kind of showing the "rookie" the ropes.

I had a couple of my kits photographed yesterday as well.

The NNL guy took pics of my '62 Ford, & the magazine guy shot my '59 Dodge.

I don't expect to see it in print, but it was still an honor to have been selected for consideration.

Hope your trip back to North Dakota was uneventful Mike, & hopefully I'll see you again next year!

In aftermath of this weekends show, I got some very good news tonight. At the NNL North show they had a Revell Make-and-Take for the kids. Well, they had some left over kits, and I asked if I could get 10 of them for some autistic kids I work with at one of the schools I work at. I have talked to the kids and shown them some of my models, and they are very interested in building their own. I tried some glue kits with them, but with not very good results. I've been thinking snap kits would really be more at their level. The guys from the NNL North were more than please to donate the 10 kits for that cause. They let me know they okay the donation. And I'll be picking them up tomarrow night, and hopefully start some kids on the new hobby (for them) of building models.

Thanks to the guys who run the NNL North. Bob and Mark in particular. I know there will be some very happy kids this coming Friday. And there is already one happy old man, who is looking forward to passing on a hobby I love to a younger generation.

That's a very noble gesture on all of your parts!

Teach them well Scott!

The future of the hobby may be in your hands! ;)
