Tom Geiger Posted June 4, 2016 Posted June 4, 2016 I love it when my hobbies come together! I'm a car guy, a model car guy and a stamp collector. Someone in the stamp hobby knew that and knew I needed this in my collection! Here's a piece in my stamp collection that would be of interest to the car guys as well. This is the insurance transfer and bill for a 1935 Ford. Note that the addressee is Dr Preston D Geiger, my namesake but no relative. But it is the reason my stamp collector friend gifted this to me! And for the grand sum of $2.75, Factory Mutual Insurance Company, which is still a major insurance company today, agreed to insure one brand new 1935 Ford. The good doctor traded in his two year old Buick on the new Ford. The '33 Buick is a major boat, so it's interesting to see that the new Ford had more horsepower. It must've been a V8 Ford! I find this kind of stuff priceless! And always keep it in my collection. Your thoughts? Feel free to add your own Automobilia to this thread!
Roadrunner Posted June 4, 2016 Posted June 4, 2016 I have a few odds an ends that are auto related, should I post them on all three identical threads?
Tom Geiger Posted June 4, 2016 Author Posted June 4, 2016 I have a few odds an ends that are auto related, should I post them on all three identical threads? Don't know how that happened. I've asked Harry to delete two. I posted it once.
Xingu Posted June 4, 2016 Posted June 4, 2016 Tom - You should be able to delete them yourself. Look near the top of the page.
Harry P. Posted June 4, 2016 Posted June 4, 2016 I deleted the other two.Tom... what a coincidence you have a cover with a "Geiger" on it!
Tom Geiger Posted June 4, 2016 Author Posted June 4, 2016 Harry just messaged me that he took care of it, Thank You Harry! I didn't do anything different than any other post but suddenly I got three of them! Proceed onward.
Tom Geiger Posted June 4, 2016 Author Posted June 4, 2016 Tom... what a coincidence you have a cover with a "Geiger" on it!Which is why my stamp collector friend gave it to me! And the connection to old cars is cool too!
Tom Geiger Posted June 4, 2016 Author Posted June 4, 2016 I also have a mailed repair bill for a 1920s Model T I could share... unless this is a total bore to you guys!
Roadrunner Posted June 4, 2016 Posted June 4, 2016 Harry just messaged me that he took care of it, Thank You Harry! I didn't do anything different than any other post but suddenly I got three of them! Proceed onward. It happens. I made four identical posts one day, one after the other.
Harry P. Posted June 4, 2016 Posted June 4, 2016 You guys better knock it off. You're going to break the internet...
unclescott58 Posted June 4, 2016 Posted June 4, 2016 Post it!Yes. Please do. I'm not bored by most anything automotive related.
Tom Geiger Posted June 4, 2016 Author Posted June 4, 2016 More stuff I've put aside in my stamp collection... Not the one I was looking for, this is basically someone making a $2 payment on their account at the local Ford dealer. I have another one somewhere that itemizes a tune up on a Model T. None of these had any contents. I can imagine the top two had bids on providing vehicles to the International Petroleum Company. I kept the bottom one because I got a chuckle out of the "Practical Automobile Repair Man" back in 1915. And I once had a roll of these!
Xingu Posted June 4, 2016 Posted June 4, 2016 At one point I had fairly large collections of road maps and oil cans/bottles. Have very few left. Will try to get some photos of them the next time they surface during a room cleaning. I know what room they are in, but not which boxes.
mk11 Posted June 4, 2016 Posted June 4, 2016 A friend in CA sent me some thirties socal maps... interesting to compare to a modern freeway map mike
Harry P. Posted June 5, 2016 Posted June 5, 2016 I wonder why the "practical auto repair man" in Aurora, Illinois (a suburb of Chicago) would be writing to someone in California?
Harry P. Posted June 5, 2016 Posted June 5, 2016 Tom, do you collect auto-related stamps as a topical subject?
1972coronet Posted June 5, 2016 Posted June 5, 2016 A friend in CA sent me some thirties socal maps... interesting to compare to a modern freeway map mike Nice find ! That appears to be a c.1945 map , which I base my assumption on : - Arroyo Parkway US 66 / CA 11 Figuroa Street ( modern-day CA 110 Pasadena Fwy ) - US 6 / CA 11 : The lack of a parkway through Downtown LA signifies that this is prior to 1947 ; that's the year that the Harbor Fwy opened (modern day I-110 ) - US 60-70-99 Garvey Blvd . By c.1947 this was truncated to the then-new San Bernardino Fwy (modern day I-10 "east") - CA 15 Atlantic Blvd . The Long Beach Fwy wasn't more than a thought at the time this was made . CA 15 was truncated to the L.B. Fwy by c.1958 ; renumbered CA 7 during the Great Highway Renumbering Act of 1964 ; eventually becoming I-710 in 1983 . The oldest map that I have is a 1957 Thomas Brothers Guide for Los Angeles & Orange counties .
Tom Geiger Posted June 5, 2016 Author Posted June 5, 2016 Tom, do you collect auto-related stamps as a topical subject? Not really. Most of the auto topicals are sets made to sell to stamp collectors. I love the classics that show contemporary vehicles, and automotive correspondence and sales covers. Here's a few that I have.. 1901 Pan American Exposition - AKA The Worlds Fair. A set of 6 stamps touting great achievements. This one was the brand new automobile. I believe this is a Studebaker Electric. 1913 Ford Special Delivery stamp of 1922, I believe this is a Harley 1925 Ford mail trucks I like these because they were issued back when the vehicles were new, and they were proud to have them in service. Not years later just to make money off stamp collectors.
Tom Geiger Posted June 5, 2016 Author Posted June 5, 2016 These are all postcards from the era that is represented in the photos... The first official White House car Girls! 1941 Fords Asbury Park NJ. I can see a corner of Convention Hall in the background
sjordan2 Posted June 5, 2016 Posted June 5, 2016 I have bunches of collector's items related to kits I thought I'd build. MERCEDES 300 SL: Original parts, owner and shop manuals, including cases, plus factory brochures and flyers; original hubcaps, badges, grille star and barrel, and scripts. Similar materials for Jag E-Type. Repro and original factory brochures and manuals for Mercedes SS/SSK, Rolls Phantom II and Phantom III. All of which exceeds by many times my investments in the related kits. Of course, there are many research reference books and videos involved.
ChrisBcritter Posted June 5, 2016 Posted June 5, 2016 My boss bought a one-family-owned '50 Studebaker Land Cruiser at an estate auction; among the old papers inside was the original registration:
ChrisBcritter Posted June 6, 2016 Posted June 6, 2016 These were among the papers when we cleaned out the Westwood apartment of a woman who had lived there since 1953: Flying A gas calendar card; other side was a 1952 calendar, IIRC Flying A 1951 credit card: (I have these saved as VERY large files, as I wanted to make t-shirt iron-ons from the logos. PM me if you'd like to have the 3300 x 2551 pixel versions.)
