CountryJoe Posted June 15, 2016 Posted June 15, 2016 (edited) Here's one... has anyone ever made one of those "Bra" things that goes over the front of the car? Where would you even begin? Any suggestions? Something kinda like this... Edited June 15, 2016 by CountryJoe
Jhedir6 Posted June 15, 2016 Posted June 15, 2016 Only thing I can suggest is maybe going to Fabricland, not sure if you have those in the US, we do in Canada. Check and see if they might have something that might work.David
Scott Colmer Posted June 15, 2016 Posted June 15, 2016 (edited) I would see what I could do with masking tape laid on fabric from an umbrella. You will need a good pattern first. Edited June 16, 2016 by Scott Colmer
BigTallDad Posted June 16, 2016 Posted June 16, 2016 I would see what I could do with masking tape laid on fabric demo an umbrella. You will need a good pattern first.I like Scott's idea! Before you paint the body, put some masking tape on it where the bra would go; doing this beforehand reduces the risk of nicks and dings in the paint. Mark the outline of the bra on the masking tape, remove the tape, and place it on the material of choice (that umbrella material mentioned before sounds good). Cut the material on the lines of the masking tape, remove the tape, moisten the material, and test fit it on the body. The moisture, while not affecting the umbrella material, will help the material to cling to the body.It might take several iterations.
CountryJoe Posted June 16, 2016 Author Posted June 16, 2016 Thanks Gentlemen, I have been goin' over this in my head for about 3 weeks now and never woulda thought about the umbrella material... I've probably got 2 of 3 of them broken little suckers sittin' in the bottom of my closet somewhere. Thanks again... I'll let you know howit works out.
MGL Posted July 3, 2016 Posted July 3, 2016 (edited) I have not tried this but another idea would be to use black Plasti Dip ( this, http://www.homedepot.com/p/Plasti-Dip-14-5-oz-Black-Rubber-Coating-11603-6/202196703 ). Maybe lay out all the seams with pin strip tape, mask off the area you don't want covered, dip it, after it dries cut inside the edge of the body and peel it off the inside, run a bead of canopy glue or white glue along the cut edge to keep it from peeling up. As a bonus, any wrinkles would make it look more realistic. I have never had any luck with the spray but the dip works great for tools. As I said, I have never tried this for what you are trying to do but the texture should be about right. I'm not sure what would work for the grill area, maybe that fine mesh material for speaker covers? Edited July 3, 2016 by MGL
CountryJoe Posted July 31, 2016 Author Posted July 31, 2016 Now that is something worth looking into...
unclescott58 Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 I'm not a fan of bras on cars. And I will never use one on one of my models. But, still I'm courious about what the end results of this will be. I hope you keep us posted Mr. Forsythe (Joe?).
Pete J. Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 Not sure that fabric is the is answer. In spite of what they look like, every bra I have owned is made of vinyl and does not have a raw fabric finish. The only fabric/mesh is the net over lights and turn signals. The bra is there to protect against stone chips and is there for quite thick. It is a vinyl with a heavy cotton batting on the back side to protect against scratches. I think your best choice is to do something similar to a vinyl top. Thick masking tape sprayed with a matt black paint. Some black lace would work fine for the screen parts.
