landman Posted June 19, 2016 Posted June 19, 2016 (edited) Thought I'd do this one next. It's in fairly good shape, the only thing missing appears to be a cowl lamp. The paint is so-so. So a refresh instead of a restoration, with a bit of detailing. Edited December 25, 2020 by landman
misterNNL Posted June 19, 2016 Posted June 19, 2016 Good luck. Will you be stripping the body paint as well?

wayne swayze Posted June 20, 2016 Posted June 20, 2016 After seeing the quality of your work Pat, this should be really nice when you're done. A bit of detailing and you should be good to go !
CometMan Posted June 20, 2016 Posted June 20, 2016 Very nice to see a Phaeton for a change! Will you be staying stock?
mod3l Lover Posted June 20, 2016 Posted June 20, 2016 This is nice! Keep it stock, theylook so good that way. David S.
landman Posted June 20, 2016 Author Posted June 20, 2016 Very nice to see a Phaeton for a change! Will you be staying stock?Yes.
mustang1989 Posted June 20, 2016 Posted June 20, 2016 Cool project! Lookin' forward to the rebuild Pat! Nice lookin' shop BTW! Where'd you get it at?
landman Posted June 20, 2016 Author Posted June 20, 2016 Cool project! Lookin' forward to the rebuild Pat! Nice lookin' shop BTW! Where'd you get it at?HeyJoe, That started out as a simple basic background dio, a backdrop for photos. Then it took a life of its own. It is a combination of aftermarket resin items and scratchbuilt stuff. You can see how it happened here:http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/topic/97646-background-diorama-flatheads-to-boxers-engine-rebuilders/
landman Posted June 21, 2016 Author Posted June 21, 2016 (edited) This was the extent of my detailing back then Added the spark plug wire conduits, made a cutout for the generator and a cap for the oil filler. Made a fuel pump. Edited December 25, 2020 by landman
Roadrunner Posted June 21, 2016 Posted June 21, 2016 The '32 Phaeton has a real special place for me. One of my all time favorite models I built as a kid was the Phaeton (AMT I think), and I really regret no longer having it. I have since acquired another kit though, and as soon as I feel confident I can do it right, I'll start right on it.
landman Posted June 21, 2016 Author Posted June 21, 2016 (edited) Engine pretty well where I want it. A few touch ups and it'll do. I know, I know, I didn't strip it and file down the seams. Edited December 26, 2020 by landman
landman Posted June 21, 2016 Author Posted June 21, 2016 (edited) Put some primer and paint on. Not really happy with it. Sometimes my irresistible urge to salvage everything bites me back. This time it was a very old remnant of Humbrol 20. The seat has the color of leather that I like but it has the wrong texture. will play with that next. Edited December 26, 2020 by landman
landman Posted June 22, 2016 Author Posted June 22, 2016 (edited) Here we go again. Stripped and primed again. The old Humbrol 20 is in the garbage. Please don't laugh. Edited December 26, 2020 by landman
wayne swayze Posted June 23, 2016 Posted June 23, 2016 Just guessing Pat, but will you be painting the fender assembly in a darker "chocolate" brown?
landman Posted June 23, 2016 Author Posted June 23, 2016 Just guessing Pat, but will you be painting the fender assembly in a darker "chocolate" brown? No Wayne. the fenders will remain black. They are good enough to keep. The body will be painted red again but not as nice a red as the Humbrol 20 that I used the first time. I used the brown primer to make the red come out darker. We'll see.
landman Posted June 23, 2016 Author Posted June 23, 2016 (edited) I have to get this: to look like this: Edited December 26, 2020 by landman
landman Posted June 23, 2016 Author Posted June 23, 2016 (edited) Removed the kit's roof bows. Found some toothpicks and small brass tubing. Got some measurements off an approximately to scale photo . Squished & filed the end of the tubing, beveled the tooth pick. Trial fit. Made up a Hidem molding out of 24Gauge wire. Ace-Garageguy Posted June 23, 2016 Posted June 23, 2016 It's good to see someone putting so much effort into restoring and upgrading one of these. Your shop diorama just gets better and better too.
Roadrunner Posted June 23, 2016 Posted June 23, 2016 I'll not be bothering with the top on mine, but if I change my mind, I'll be bookmarking this as reference.
landman Posted June 25, 2016 Author Posted June 25, 2016 (edited) Somewhat better results this time around..... Edited December 26, 2020 by landman
landman Posted June 25, 2016 Author Posted June 25, 2016 I thought it looked good before.it looked ok at first, great color but it began to react with the primer and became blotchy. Also, it ended up looking grainy which I turned out to be in the paint itself. Looked like dust nibs.
