The Superbird has arrived

The Mail person just dropped of the box that has what I anticipate to be the centerpiece of my efforts. The Monogram 1970 Plymouth Superbird. I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE this car. IMHO it is what a 1957 Bel Air or 1963 Split Window Vette is to the Chevy guys. Or a 1964 1/2 Mustang is to the Ford guys. This is the one Mopar car that gets my blood going. You either hate or love the style of this car. There is no middle ground. I even have the paint ready to go. Even love the fact that it's got the textured roof included. Thanks for looking and wish me luck.

Looks like it is going to be a nice build, especially with your enthusiasm toward the car.  OK, is it done yet?  How far have you got with it, after all you have had it for at least an hour?

I have exactly the same kit on the go.  It's a pretty nice kit fit wise.  

Too bad that they did not provide the 426 Hemi as the engine though.  The interior uni-piece looks as if it's going to be hard to mask.

I'm still struggling with fitting the floor piece to the body and finding those glue contact points as well as fitting the glass piece in - is it better to cut it in two?

I'm not real sure why, but I've just never been able to "get into" this car. I've seen some nice models done of it though. I'll look forward to your project. What color(s) have you chosen?

if you build it stock ...........Keith Marks has the right decals for you , this is my all time favorite  car ,I want one .

To me there were nice colors the yellow (a guy in my town where I grew up on Long Island had this color) or the Hemi Orange. But I have chosen Petty Blue. I read somewhere that Rustoleum Gloss Maui Blue is the closest. After all it was this car that brought Richard back to represent Plymouth.

Ironically I was at my cousin's house yesterday asking about his old model collection and he said "go look up in the barn might be some in there" I found two, a Yenko 69 camaro and this 70 Superbird! It's all here and never been worked on.

I really like this kit. Some say it's to simple....wrong scale (vs 1/25) but it builds well and looks spot on to me.

I want to build a few more in other colors....but only one so far/ I'll be watching.....

If you're so inclined , Jerry , you can also pick-up the Revell-Monogram 1970 Road Runner kit , and use its interior ; it would be a more accurate addition (versus the GTX interior included with the Superbird). Then you can use the GTX 'bucket in the Road Runner (the GTX interior was an option on the Road Runner vis-a-vis deluxe interior) ; that way you're not losing any investment .

Jerry - the correct body colour paint name was Vitamin C Orange - the Dodge equivalent was Go Mango which Testors Model Master makes.  The Hemi Orange colour was used on certain engine blocks.

Not sure about the other colours but for Super Birds whose bodies were painted the Vitamin C colour, the front end and the spoiler were painted a slightly different shade of orange - something to do, I think, with the different materials used.

The closest match for Petty Blue is Chrysler's own TB3 Super Blue (Dodge) Basin Street Blue (Plymouth) . While its colour code indicates '1962 [the "T" in the number] Corporate Blue' , it wasn't assigned as a regular option until the 1972 model year . It is very , very close to Petty Blue .

I always thought it was a bit odd that a car that existed solely to be used in NASCAR races only came with a vinyl top! You're right, Jerry, there doesn't seem to be much middle ground on people's opinion of the "winged warriors" (along with the '69 Dodge Daytona), I am on the "love 'em" side, yours should be very nice, especially with your enthusiasm for the subject! I'll be watching your progress.

The modifications made to accommodate the flush backlight ( colloq. , "rear 'window'" ) necessitated the vinyl top . Same with the black-only headliner .

Hi Jerry I build slot cars . I have two Daytona kits less the bodies and few parts hood scoops bumpers Windows . Could be helpful for your build
