TimNYC Posted July 8, 2016 Posted July 8, 2016 (edited) I'm building the Monogram 40 Ford Standard Coupe, and as usual, am preparing to open the grill to expose the radiator behind it. I'm looking for a replacement appropriate grill, with vertical ribs. I have the MCG detail kit, but that is for a Deluxe with the horizontal ribs in the PE part. 1) Has anyone here successfully ground off the back of the chromed part while keeping the ribs intact? I've had pretty good luck with other models. I do recognize that this will mean cutting out the support piece and building a support structure for the replacement grille. 2) Does anyone make a Standard grille? I usually want to make sure I have a spare before the attempt. thanks!Tim Edited July 8, 2016 by TimNYC
landman Posted July 8, 2016 Posted July 8, 2016 Wasn't the '40 Standard grille the same as the '39 Deluxe? I think one of the 39/40 kits had both.
Ramfins59 Posted July 9, 2016 Posted July 9, 2016 Model Car Garage sells the '40 Ford Standard PE set with the grille for $10.99...... Part # SKU-2274.
TimNYC Posted July 9, 2016 Author Posted July 9, 2016 (edited) D**n! Then I just bought the wrong one at NNL East this spring...my bad. I missed it. I'll put the Deluxe one up for trade here. Many thanks,Tim Edited July 9, 2016 by TimNYC
TimNYC Posted July 9, 2016 Author Posted July 9, 2016 Now, back to my 1) question: has anyone successfully ground off the back of the Lindberg 40 Ford kit grille to expose the ribs? Knowing the MCG part is out there is great, but I'd like that to be the fallback, not the primary solution.thanks!Tim

And wasn't the Monogram 1/24 while the AMT and Lindberg are 1/25?
TimNYC Posted July 9, 2016 Author Posted July 9, 2016 No you're not...I must've had a Lindberg box in front of me when I typed that. It's the Monogram.
Ace-Garageguy Posted July 9, 2016 Posted July 9, 2016 (edited) Now I'm confused. Are you doing a Monogram or a Lindberg? And wasn't the Monogram 1/24 while the AMT and Lindberg are 1/25? The Monogram-boxed '40 is the same as the Revell-boxed '40, and it's 1/25. The only 1/24 '40 is the old Monogram pickup. Edited July 9, 2016 by Ace-Garageguy
Snake45 Posted July 10, 2016 Posted July 10, 2016 Okay, got it now.Was the '39 grille in the AMT Diamond in the Rough issue of the '40 Ford Sedan? Would that fit? I think I might have one of those. If it would work, I'd try to find it.
Art Anderson Posted July 10, 2016 Posted July 10, 2016 Wasn't the '40 Standard grille the same as the '39 Deluxe? I think one of the 39/40 kits had both.Similar theme, but an entirely different grille. Revell's '40 Ford coupe has that Standard grille.
Art Anderson Posted July 10, 2016 Posted July 10, 2016 The Monogram-boxed '40 is the same as the Revell-boxed '40, and it's 1/25. The only 1/24 '40 is the old Monogram pickup. The old (1961-vintage) Monogram '40 Ford pickup is 1/24 scale. Art

ChrisBcritter Posted July 12, 2016 Posted July 12, 2016 Might be a good idea to scribe between the grille bars to deepen them before grinding through the back - that would make the piece a bit stronger.
