JollySipper Posted October 31, 2016 Posted October 31, 2016 I just found this site while searching around for custom matched paints for an upcoming project. Looks like a legitimate business, and they can do aerosols! and they are cheaper than MCW aerosols.....http://www.paintscratch.com/Their cans are 12 ozs. and run about $25, MCW cans are like 4 ozs. and run near $15.......Check them out, you may can find that perfect factory color you've been hunting..................
Snake45 Posted October 31, 2016 Posted October 31, 2016 Went there and just for giggles searched for '68 Pontiac Verdoro Green. They list it--but scroll all the way to the bottom and there's this:Important note:Because these colors are so old, we cannot guarantee a match. There are No Refunds and we recommend you send us a part for custom matching. We will not remix this paint even if the color does not match.
StevenGuthmiller Posted October 31, 2016 Posted October 31, 2016 Be warned that these paints are designed for actual vehicles. Unlike outfits like MCW, the metallic in the paint will reflect that. Be aware of the "bass boat" affect. Steve
JollySipper Posted October 31, 2016 Author Posted October 31, 2016 Snake, I think they mean that because of fading and weathering the paint they mix fresh won't match what's on your vehicle....... I guess you could send them a fuel door or something small from your car and they could match from that..............
martinfan5 Posted November 1, 2016 Posted November 1, 2016 12oz seems like a loooooottttttt of paint for a 1/24th scale kit, use about an 1oz of paint for most stuff that I build

I guess you could send them a fuel door or something small from your car and they could match from that..............Actually, while this is true, in so many cases, the paint formulae of decades ago often used tinting pigments that are no longer available, and in a lot of cases, even the original mixing formula no longer exists. About 20 years aoo or so, the late Lee Baker and I worked with Dave Dodge (then the owner of MCW Automotive Finishes) to get a range of factory colors for the 1936-37 Cord 810/812. The results are excellent for what they are, VERY close approximations based on color chips, but even Auburn Automobile Company, who produced the Cord automobiles, didn't have a truly consistent paint formula for each color--so those cars differed in shade with each passing couple of months. JollySipper Posted November 1, 2016 Author Posted November 1, 2016 Good points about the quantity of paint in a 12 oz can..... That's the size of a can of Rustoleum. It's an ideal setup for me though, since I can spray my next project with it, then give Dad the rest to use on the 1:1 for some minor touchups he wants to do.............
Foxer Posted November 1, 2016 Posted November 1, 2016 I've used paintscratch.com for many of my builds, all for cars I've owned, both in a airbrush and in their spray cans. These were not metallic so can't comment on those. I've never had a problem and they apply and cover well.
martinfan5 Posted November 2, 2016 Posted November 2, 2016 (edited) 1/2 oz. will usually do it for me. SteveSame for me in most cases, I was just rounding up. I am able to depending on the model get three complete paint jobs from one 2oz bottle of Scale Finishes paint. Edited November 2, 2016 by martinfan5
