majel Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 Has anyone ever tried Casting the rear taillight section of a ferrari f50? I have broken two of them trying to cut out the "mesh" portion to install the Crazy Modeler mesh. The clear plastic is way too brittle, could it be cast and would it then be possible to cut out the center section more successfully than cutting clear plastic?
Foxer Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 I don't have the kit and F50 photos show simple round tail lights with an inner circle of ... I assume some mesh and/or clear light. If I guessed wrong it's only because you didn't include a photo of what you need. It seems a drill would be the way to remove the center. If needed you could then insert a rod that leaves the depth you need for the mesh. If I'm wrong, it's because we love to fix imaginary problems here!
Ace-Garageguy Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 Curious as to what method you're using to cut the taillight too. A replacement part cast from clear resin will also be very delicate...unless it's WAY too thick. Here's the real car, but as the others have said, we need to see a photo of the kit part to fully understand the problem you have.
John Pol Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 can always use Bontdic to do the job to make them
Casey Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 What are you using to "cut" the clear plastic? Yes, it's more brittle than the other plastic parts, but if you don't stress it, it can be cut and sanded to work with the aftermarket mesh. You should be able to cut off the tail light "pods" from the center section using a fine-tooth razor saw, then sand any excess material with a sanding stick, and all the way up to a super smooth finish with polishing cloths as necessary. I'm guessing the CM set is like this one, where the tail light pods slip into the mesh from behind?:
