Ajay Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 (edited) Look on the bright side guys - at least you're not paying around $10 a gallon like here in the U.K. (and most of that is tax which goes to the Govt.) Edited May 8, 2008 by Ajay

I looked into riding a bus to school. which would be alot cheaper. but I'd be on the bus 6 hours a day Edited May 8, 2008 by gasman
Kodiak Island Modeler Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 Here in Kodiak it costs $4.14 a gallon, or at least it did the last time my wife gassed her mini-van. That lasts her about a month. I ride a bicycle (Specialized with saddle bags and such), so I hardly ever gas my 78 Ford F150. I usually only use it to go out in the back country.
kasteer Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 Prices up here in Md about .10 over last day or two. Filled up for 3.67 this morning at the cheapest place I could find.

lordairgtar Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 Here in Muskego it is at $3.85 for reg unleaded. Another town north of us had $4.02 for reg unleaded. lowest in the area was $3.73.
Jello Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 Gas here is now 3.68 a gallon and diesel is 4.06. This corn oil is what started the whole dang thing in the first place! Oil is no more expensive to produce than it was 20 years ago and new technology actually allows the oil companies to drill & produce & refine oil far cheaper than 30 years ago! The use of E85 is a joke...whats more important to us, use it as food or use it as fuel? The price of food has gone up much higher than fuel..you need corn to feed livestock, make food products, feed milking cows and yet, here we are using it for fuel?? What in the hell happen to common sense?? E85 does nasty work on engines not design to use it and I have seen the results of that work with dryed out oil seals & burn valves and thats not even mentioning the damage to computers. I don't believe in government control in our way of life but theres some things that do need to be watched like health care, fuel, food, medicines..in other words, all the basic necessary things that people need & depended on to survive. ~ Jeff
Fuel Coupe Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 I thought this was interesting. I'm sure you've all seen it. Diet Snapple 16 oz $1.29 ... $10.32 per gallon Lipton Ice Tea 16 oz $1.19 .........$9.52 per gallon Gatorade 20 oz $1.59 ..... $10.17 per gallon Ocean Spray 16 oz $1.25 ......... $10.00 per gallon Brake Fluid 12 oz $3.15 ...... $33.60 per gallon Vick's Nyquil 6 oz $8.35 .. $178.13 per gallon Pepto Bismol 4 oz $3.85 .. $123.20 per gallon Whiteout 7 oz $1.39 ....... . $25.42 per gallon Scope 1.5 oz $0.99 .....$84.48 per gallon And this is the REAL KICKER... Evian water 9 oz $1.49..$21.19 per gallon! $21.19 for WATER and the buyers don't even know the source (Evian spelled backwards is Naive.) Ever wonder why printers are so cheap? So they have you hooked for the ink. Someone calculated the cost of the ink at............... (you won't believe it....but it is true........) $5,200 a gal. (five thousand two hundred dollars) So, the next time you're at the pump,be glad your car doesn't run on water, Scope, or Whiteout, Pepto Bismol, Nyquil or God forbid, Printer Ink!

Hmmm....you don't happen to work for an OIL COMPANY, do you??? Another point: ALL of the items you listed, while priced ridiculously high per gallon, are DISCRETIONARY purchases. Nobody HAS to buy Scope, Evian, Gatorade, etc. There are other brands we could buy...or we could simply not buy at all! All of those items are bought because the consumer CHOOSES to buy them. How many of us buy gas because we WANT to...and how many of us buy gas because we HAVE to??? And with gas, there's no comparison shopping or generic brand available. ALL gas stations charge the same price, give or take a nickel or dime. The oil companies sell a product that we HAVE to buy, and they're sticking it to the consumer full speed ahead...just because they CAN.

Easy Harry its just something I found on the net and thought interesting. And Yes I do Work for one of the biggest oil companies out there. No I don't get my gas free nor do I get any incentives for the gas prices other than being a share holder. I hate the fact that gas prices are so high. Its gotten so bad for me that I don't even go to the gas station in my uniform for fear of being attacked for the price of gas.... We have cut our summer traveling down to a minimum due to the cost of fuel.

I'll bet the price of gas doesn't bother you so much when you see what your oil company shares are trading for... I'm all for free enterprise, capitalism and supply-and-demand economics...but when the price of oil is skyrocketing totally out of control and going through the roof due to billionaire oil speculators, while the rest of us are being screwed through higher prices for gas and everything else that depends on the price of gas, like trucks delivering goods to stores, airfares, public transportation, all things made of plastics (oil), etc...well, that tends to get me just a little bit cranky. There's something wrong with a system where a very few incredibly wealthy companies can make billions in profits while the other 99.99% of us are forced to pay for it with no choice. And on top of it all, our incredibly wise government gives these "struggling" companies tax credits!!! Because we know it's hard to scrape by on just a few measly BILLION every quarter. Where's my tax credit? Oh, that's right...I'll be getting a $300 "stimulus" check. Wow...that may be just enough to cover one month's home heating bill. Or one month's worth of gas for my car, so I can continue to go to work and make enough money to buy the gas that gets me to work so I can make enough money to buy the gas that gets me to work... sigh...

I'm in the same boat your in Harry I got the same little check you got. I recieve the same benefits from high gas prices as you. I never thought the day would come when I had to budget my gas bill. Dont hate on me for the career choice I made. I gotta feed my family the same as you... But you go ahead and sh*t on me. I'm wiping my a$$ with $100 bills and laughing all the way to the bank
Harry P. Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 I only wish I had bought oil company stock years ago! Then the current price of a gallon of gas would be a whole lot easier to take.

Harry P. Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 Yeah, me too. And I WORKED for the .coms back in the 90s. Unfortunately I was freelance, not an "employee". I got to do the same work everyone else did, but didn't get the stock options like the "real" employees got. I would come in on Monday mornings and all you would hear was how this guy just bought himself a new house and the other guy just bought himself a new car...there was so much easy money flying around it was like a dream. And then it all went "poof"...
george 53 Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 Shane,Not to worry,Bro. I still luv ya! I know what it's costin ta to put fuel in that big ol boat you drive around in! betcha never even thought diesel would get higher than regular when you bought it!These prices SUCK!!!!!

Harry P. Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 Im sure this will all go poof too... Not a chance. Once prices reach a certain level, they NEVER go down again. Yeah, maybe gas might drop a dime or two a gallon every now and then, but basically we'll never see $2 or even $3 a gallon gas again. The oil companies see now that they can sell gas for $4 a gallon...$5 a gallon coming soon, no doubt... without any trouble at all. Why in the world would they ever drop the price? They have us all "over a barrel" (pun intended!!!) and there's not a darn thing any of us can do about it. The only real way out of this mess is a huge push toward alternatives to oil...hydrogen being the most promising technology. But the oil companies (and our government, which is apparently controlled by the oil companies) will NEVER mount a serious effort to wean us off of oil. There's WAY too much money to be made by the fat cats with the system being just what it is right now. It's funny...on the one hand the government talks about "conservation" and tells us to use less oil, while on the other hand it's in bed with "Big Oil", who's raking in huge profits at our expense.
nonova Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 I want to move where you guys live. I paid $3.94 this morning for regular unleaded. The station next door had regular fo $4.04.This is in Aurora, Il. Chicago is higher still
gasman Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 what really makes me mad is that it seems like our president could care less about the price of gas. seems like he more worried about what country he going to invade next. We have the oil in this country, but for some reason congress (democrats) won't let them drill there. even though people in those regions would welcome drilling. instead of blaming everyone else for our problems we need to find a way too fix them. GM has the Volt coming out soon (even with a $40,000 price tag there is alot of interest for this), I wish GM, Ford, Toyota, and Dodge would spend money making there fuel efficient vehicles for fuel efficient. seems like there sticking Hybrid motors into Tohoe's and Durango's, which still struggle to get 20 MPG, when they should be making hybrids of Cobalts, Focus, and Caliber's. which could get 45+ MPG's. I think the second coming of the Muscle car is nearing its end. and Chevy and Chysler are late to the party (Like AMC) your gonna start seeing cars with less then 100 hp again. and the cars will get smaller and smaller.
bobss396 Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 The going rate in Long Island NY is between $3.89 and $4.05 for 87 octane regular. Good thing I picked up a 2002 Altima last week. The onboard fuel mileage calculator runs between 23.8 and 24.6 so far on local driving. It should be better on the road. I even got a cool $450 for junking my '84 Chevy wagon. I have at least cut my gas usage in half. Bob

Yeah, something deffo is rotten in downtown Washington DC. You'd think that they WANT us in a recession by the amount of non-action that is going on in the behalf of the VOTING motorists. Bob
sfhess Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 Probably the best way to get the Congress and state legislatures to act on the high fuel prices is to require them to pay for their own vehicles and all associated expenses. Too many of them have government-supplied vehicles (mostly big suvs) and government-issued credit cards. Looking at Tahoe hybrids, one of the reasons GM doesn't make smaller hybrids may be due to the fact that there is a smaller surface area to slather HYBRID decals and nameplates all over the car. Count the number of times the word Hybrid appears on a Tahoe or GMC equivalent. It's kind of humorous actually. They wil crank up the prices until enough people scream about it then lower them a little so people say, "thank goodness." I saw an article a while back where they noted that this latest round of increases did not seem to generate as much outrage as id had in the past. I think most people have resigned thamselves to the fact that all this is inevitable and have decided to just suck it up and pay. What else can you do? As far as boycotting this company or that company, I think that is futile. Around here, you don't see "branded" fuel tank trucks. Just a generic truck that could go to just about any station.
