chriscarroll.ogre Posted January 9, 2017 Posted January 9, 2017 I was doing some window shopping online and ran across several mentions of the Revell 1958 Chevrolet Impala. I never knew this kit existed. I knew about the AMT 1958 Impala, but not the Revell. Does anyone know if there was ever a head-to-head comparison of the two models? That would be interesting. Are they both good kits? Which is better? Is one more accurate than the other? Etc, etc. Thoughts?
chriscarroll.ogre Posted January 9, 2017 Author Posted January 9, 2017 Thanks! That's exactly what I was looking for!

Which is better? Is one more accurate than the other? Etc, etc. Thoughts?I have built both and still have at least one of each in my stash. The AMT kit was cutting edge at that time and featured opening doors, which with the interior door panel acting as the door jam made them a little thicker than they should have been in scale. The kit is a very nice representation of a '58 Impala and has just been reissued and is readly available. The Revell kit is not currently being issued but it can be still found in most hobby shops. The Revell kit I believe was Revell's first issue with the body side chrome and even the molding along the top of the rear quarter panels molded separately and on the chrome tree. They have several mounting pins on the back side which match holes in the recessed area on the side of the body. They are a very tight fit and you would want to scrape the chrome off the back side and the pins for a better fit and adhesion. The AMT kit offers additional engine options that are not in the Revell kit. Both kits use a 348 cu.in. engine with the 3x2's carburation set up as the standard engine. I personally would not discourage anyone from buy either kit as I have enjoyed them both. Not matter which one you build you will have a very nice model that is a very accurate '58 Impala.
StevenGuthmiller Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 I think they're both great kits! I haven't built the AMT kit in many moons, but it was always one of my favorite AMT kits. The Revell kit is very nice as well. I did build one of them several years ago & thought it was a very good kit. Steve
GaryR Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 WOW Steven! That is one great 58! Looks real. NICE!!!

High octane Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 Your models are gorgeous Steven and that "58 Impala is just beautiful.

This makes me want to drag one of my AMT kits to the front of the pile. I have an original annual convertible builtup and one of the older issue AMT hardtops ( molded in light blue ) I'll be honest I originally bought the hardtop kit to use as a parts kit on the annual. this picture is making me rethink that idea

This was one of the first kits that I built coming out of my 10 year hibernation & I only took a few shots. Remember Bill, this is the Revell kit. Steve
