Plastheniker Posted January 26, 2017 Posted January 26, 2017 Hi, Though I built this model more than 20 years ago I still remember that this was another kit that justified Tamiya's reputatation of supplying almost perfect kits. I found no issues, and the finished model looked convincing. Nevertheless despite all its perfection this kit would have been no project for the absolute novice. IMO such (almost) perfect kits are no longer a real challenge, and the individual work of the modeler (his thumbprint so to say) recedes more and more into the background, so I avoid them for 10 or 15 years unless I have a very special interest in the 1:1 car.
RestoModGuy Posted January 26, 2017 Posted January 26, 2017 I love this design and you did an outstanding job with this. I built the AMT version a couple of years ago and struggled with fitment issues, may need to pick up a Tamiya version
Matt Bacon Posted January 27, 2017 Posted January 27, 2017 A great build, Jurgen... every now and then, you have to build an "almost perfect" kit, because you love the car, and you don't have the time or inclination to battle a mule into submission. I like a challenging build very now and then, but I guess for me, modelling is about a balance between enjoying the "challenging" experience and placing something I want in the cabinet (not so much that I'd buy a die-cast, mind you). The XJ220 is a storied and good looking beast, though, so I wanted one, and I paid my dues making my life harder by "plumbing" the engine bay, which is the only place the Tamiya kit is really lacking. Put it in your cabinet, though, and you can really see how cool (and how BIG) the thing is! It's a couple of years since I built mine, but it was nice to see this on sale:http://www.simonfurlonger.co.uk/docs2/cars/EuVFuZAlllvBssXnvY.shtmlwhich at least confirmed the colour! (Is yours silver, or is the pale violet colour _I_see in the images a reflection of real life?)Fabulous Jagbest,M.
Dann Tier Posted January 28, 2017 Posted January 28, 2017 Absolutely beautiful build!!!!! Q: Did you use Tamiya Clear Smoke for the roof?
bbowser Posted January 28, 2017 Posted January 28, 2017 Nicest build of this kit I've seen, well done.
Plastheniker Posted January 29, 2017 Author Posted January 29, 2017 Thanks for the replies! ... see this on sale:http://www.simonfurlonger.co.uk/docs2/cars/EuVFuZAlllvBssXnvY.shtmlwhich at least confirmed the colour! (Is yours silver, or is the pale violet colour _I_see in the images a reflection of real life?)Fabulous Jagbest,M.Matt, I remember your own outstanding XK 220 very well. That peculiar green is really attractive.I mixed my paint following the pictures of an article in a German car magazine (no www in those days). The very bright lighting and my aged camera make it look a bit different on the pictures. I would describe the colour as a bluish medium grey metallic in reality. ... Q: Did you use Tamiya Clear Smoke for the roof?Dan, I used simple acrylic clear dyed with black writing ink. I had continous problems, however, achieving an even tint with my airbrush without trapping visible tiny air bubbles. Trying a full-size spray gun the result became perfect on the first attempt.
geetee66 Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 Razor sharp build!I've seen one of these beasts, in the flesh. They're big cars and despite their age, they can still hold their own compared to current supercars, in my opinion. They make the news sometimes, too. Rowan Atkinson binned his in a cornfield, or something and another time, a mechanic took one out for a spin after it had been serviced, gave it some beans and totalled it. ££££££ Ouch!
Matt Bacon Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 When you think about it, £300K for a honest to goodness 90s supercar (about 1/3 of what you'd pay for a 959 or F40) that's also the essence of Jaguar, seems like a steal...I'd much rather have one than pay twice as much for an XJR-15! Though on my real budget, an XK-R for £9k is the only remotely credible option...best,M.
