Im kicking this build to its own thread. Im making more of an effort to work on started builds. I aquired the rear wheels recently via AITM, and that is a big piece of the puzzle. This is still mostly just a rough mockup, but its starting to take shape. Engine will be a 3406.

Awesome job Terry  Here are some pictures of one that I got a ride in about 1969. I found it a few years ago and took these pictures. last I heard it was sold to National tow truck museumhttp://public.fotki.com/VincePutt/semi_truck_shows_/kramers-twin-steer-/

Man, I cant thank you enough. There are so many helpful photos that I need. There are some details with the front suspension and steering that I could see, but many that I cannot. I was able to get just about everything I needed from your photos. That also means that I have no excuse to cut any corners with the steering , so thanks for that too?. This has been a tremendous help.

Awesome work....Big, Bad, and Ugly !!!! This is one mean machine.....

Thanks JT, its definitely ugly but if you squint just enough and turn around and face the other way, its a great looking rig.

Thanks Dennis. Actually, Dave Natale got me back working on this. He noticed it in a photo and thought it was cool. I pulled it out to take some pics, and decided to work on it a bit.

Thanks Gator, what other kind of trucks are there? Seriously though, thanks for the feedback.

Oh yeah watchin where you take this one

Im gonna try not to let you down!

Great start.  I do like that wrecker.....

Thanks Warren. Your Autocar mixer was defintely an inspiration to get back on it. A top notch build for sure.

Ok, this will probably be the last update on this until the Westen Star hoods are finished. The Autocar fuel tanks looked too small and high mounted to to the suspension height, so I swapped them out with tanks from a WFL. This looks much better. I also lowered the rear fenders closer to the tires, and filed off the ribs to more closely resemble the front fenders. Im not sure weather I will add diamond plate to the fender tops, or add non-slip tread to them after paint. Any opinions?

Terry the Kramer Wrecker was originally a dump truck working the coal pits in Eastern PA before being converted to a wrecker in  '66 it used double wall frame rails. I'm glad you found my photos helpful. for the fenders on your model I would go with diamond plate that I feel would be more period correct.

   Terry,

This twin steer beast is looking good. I like the change to the rear fenders. I think I would go with the diamonmd plate on the fenders.

I like the change to the fuel tank, the first one looked too small.  As long as you are asking, I'd move the mixer body backwards a good amount.  Get the rear support almost to the back crossmember of the frame.  That way, the CG (center of gravity) for the mixer will be closer to the rears.  Imagine where the load would sit in the mixer, most of the weight is toward the front of the drum.  As in the KW mixer, the drum sits back on the frame.  Just s thought.

Thanks for the feedback gentlemen, I have decided to go diamond plate. I have done the rear fenders, and will tackle the front fenders later today. While I have the fenders apart from the cab, I need to make new hood sides after looking at the photos of the twin steer wrecker. Im itching to start fabbing up all of the rods and brackets that stabilize the front axles and start making all of the steering parts. The fact that all of this will be functional will be the best challenge.

Warren, you are absolutely correct on the drum position. I usualy take a little bit of artistic liscence on some things, and even though it should be back further, I like the look of where it is. Ive had to make a few cosmetic modifications as it is because this truck is so ugly! I appreciate the input, thank you.

Wow those added details look fantastic  !!

You planning to open the hood ?

Jeff, I was going to, but with my backlog of builds I think its smarter to make this a curbside. I have a Cummins block and trans coming courtesy of Driptroit, Mr. Brian Smith. I plan on detailing the front suspension and steering as much as I can, and that will be the show piece of this build. I always bite off more than I can chew, then it never gets finished, so Im trying to be smart about it.
