Nick F40 Posted May 25, 2008 Posted May 25, 2008 ready for it? who's your pick? I wish they would use different engines again, I like Honda but it would be cool to have Cossie power! They are pretty impressive, being without a turbo. I didn't know Maserati and Peugeot had engines that competed, heck I didn't know some of the engines that did. The last win for a six cylinder was 1946, they didn't use it much considering it won only two times. Of course four cylinders were a good choice but stopped in the 70's, I think '76, by good ol Johnny Rutherford, they were good engines. Apparently Offenhauser had good engines from the 30's to the 70's. I didn't know that Bobby Rahal had the 170mph barrier in 1986, using none other than Cosworth power!
lordairgtar Posted May 25, 2008 Posted May 25, 2008 Danica Patrick didn't finish and some New Zealander won it. An exciting win. Scott Dixon, who had pole position too.
CAL Posted May 26, 2008 Posted May 26, 2008 I feel for her. She got clobbered by some moron coming out of the pits.
ismaelg Posted May 26, 2008 Posted May 26, 2008 People that know me know that I am very Very VERY passionate about the Indy 500!!! It was a great race with a lot of drama playing all the way. Dixon drove superbly and deserved the win. Well done Scott! Welcome to inmortality! I love Danica. I've been rooting for her since day one. Not simply because she looks better than any other driver, (except Milka but that's another story) but admit it, the girl can drive! She had a good run today. I think that more than just Danica-mania, she has brought something even more important back: Emotion! In an era where everything is regulated, even the driver's behavior, she was about to rip Briscoe's head off all by herself. And he deserved it! The security director may have save his life I feel very sorry for Sarah Fisher. She put together a team where she is the driver/owner/administrator on a shoestring budget. Not even sponsors took her seriously. Yet she made the show, did a fairly decent job but ended probably without a car for next race! If that is not true love for the sport then I don't know what it is. Tony Kannan has always been a favorite, but again fate put him into the wall after leading a few laps. They all blame Marco for the daring pass but that brings me to my next point: Marco Andretti: He is a natural. He is already stepping out of the shadow of the Andretti name and making a name of his own. The kid sure has it! He saw the opportunity and did a daring pass for the lead. Can you really blame him? Marco is also bringing emotion back to the sport. He was not afraid to say after the race that it's easy to point at mistakes from the outside and he was clearly disappointed. What would you do if your car catches fire in the pits? Call it a day? NO! If your name is AJ Foyt and a number, this case IV, you clean up the damage and go back to the race, even of you know you are 20 laps down. Is it for the money? that is always a factor but passion goes beyond that. Bobby Rahal had 2 cars in the race, but his son Graham Rahal was driving for another team. As Graham said in a pre-race interview: Blood is thicker (than ethanol I guess) My favorites for the race were: Danica Patrick Marco Andretti Tony Kanaan Dan Wheldon Scott Dixon Helio Castroneves And they all had good runs. In summary, I really enjoyed today's race. For me it IS THE most important race in the world period. Thanks,
old low&slo Posted May 26, 2008 Posted May 26, 2008 I was rooting for marco. I want to see his name up there someday on the borg warner trophy !! danica is a tough lady man !! but I guess gannassi power won out today. got to give it to chip his teams are a force to reckon with. I also felt bad for sarah. she did a great job for what she had to work with . and lastly it was good to see jim nabors back. call me stupid but it just does'nt seem like the indy 500 without him singing back home again in indiana. so until next year !!!
CAL Posted May 26, 2008 Posted May 26, 2008 Driver of the day, though, was Adrian Sutil: new car, started 18th and finds himself in 4th racing the Ferraris of Massa and Kimi and gets taken out by him (Kimi) in the closing laps. They sould have let Danica rip his head off, he completely deserved it. Milka, looks good but can't drive as well as Danica, she put herself out of the race. She might of had some help, but in the end it was brain failure that put herself out. If she just would have, released the brakes, collected the car back up she wouldn’t have spun, punctured the tire and got stuck in the grass. Sarah Fisher made her own bed to sleep in.

In fact, the two of them running all out, nose to nose for say, the final 20 laps? My desire for the finish though? Tom Carnegie intoning--"Where is Andretti?" (Just kidding, Marco has the fever and he has it even more so that his legendary grandpa!) Biscuitbuilder1
Biscuitbuilder Posted May 26, 2008 Posted May 26, 2008 Was that race today? Dam, I have to get a TV..... Greg, You coulda watched Indy live, on indycar.com, with the radio broadcast instead of ABC. I did, as I live in the Indianapolis TV market, where the TV broadcast was delayed until 7pm. Biscuitbuilder1

Over the past 98 years, a number of different engines have won at Indy: Marmon 6-cylinder (1911), National 4-cylinder (1912), Peugeot 4-cyl (1913--the engine that introduced DOHC to auto racing world-wide, and the inspiration for every Miller, Duesenberg and Offenhauser ever built, BTW), Delage 4-cyl (1914), Mercedes 4-cyl (1915) Peugeot-Premier 4's in 1916-1919), Frontenac 4-cyl (1920--designed and built by the Chevrolet brothers), Frontenac straight 8 (1921), Miller straight 8 (1922-23), Duesenberg straight 8 (1924, 25, 27), Offenhauser 4-cylinder (1935-38, 1947-76), Maserati straight 8 (1939-40), Sparks-Thorne 6-cylinder (1946--essentially a 6-cylinder Offenhauser), Ford 255cid V8 DOHC (1965-67, turbocharged 169cid 1969-71), Cosworth-Ford DFX V8 (beginning in 1977)--lost track of how many different engines CART brought to the Speedway. Of course, IRL brought in the GM Northstar based Olds Aurora V8 in 1997, then Honda took over. As for speed "barriers" in qualifying, the first 100mph qualifying lap came, I believe, in 1916, 125mph barrier fell to Leon Duray in 1928, 150mph was passed by Parnelli Jones in 1961, 160mph barrier was broken by, I believe Mario Andretti in 1966, 170mph barrier fell to Al Unser Sr in 1970 I think), 180mph barrier and 190mph went away in 1972 with Bobby Unser, and 200mph fell to Tom Sneva in 1977. The current all-time one and four lap records were set, not by a CART driver, but by Arie Luyendyke in 1996, although in a CART-spec car, at nearly 138mph (or a gnat's whisker faster). Guest zebm1 Posted May 26, 2008 Posted May 26, 2008 Best action of tha day at Indy waz Danica heading down tha PIT Road towards her own OK Corral! ! ! TV announcer says, "Did ya'll hear what Roger Penske told his Driver - SHUT YOUR VISOR!" -......yup I waz rootin' fer sum real ACTION....... and tha Fans were cheering her on....."Kill tha Bum....."
MonoPed Posted May 26, 2008 Posted May 26, 2008 (edited) Maro is the real deal racer, and he will get get a 500 win. I was hopin to see Danica throw down, I think she coulda whooped his @$$ as mad as she was!! Gettin "beat by a girl" on the track is one thing, but getting beat up by a girl in the pits, on national TV? That woulda been hilarious!! Edited May 26, 2008 by MonoPed
58 Impala Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 I'm an Andretti/Green fan, they are all good drivers. I think Marco could have waited instead of giving Tony nowhere to go but up in the marbles. They're teammates for Pete's sake. Marco should have waited for the straightaway to make a run on Tony. They were doing almost 220 in the corners, things get ugly pretty quick at those speeds. I feel bad for Danica, she had a good car and would have finished well. It was a good race and I enjoyed it. Those Ganassi cars and drivers are the ones to beat, reminds me of the Zanardi/Vasser days.

But I heard about it and I figured Dixon was strong, and I was rooting for Marco a little. I heard about the Danica ordeal and started to laugh and when I saw that comment I cracked up! I sadly, , did watch the 600 and it was actually interesting but same old same old, WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME? Rolex at Limerock DANG DANG DANG DANG ###### ###### DANG DANG DANG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I missed that, I followed what SPEED said, and I MISSED IT!!! They only been talking about it since the last Rolex race. You didn't miss much. ###### Lizards had no chance, and it was pick you Pontiac to win. I am sure this is going to bring a weight penalty to Pontiac or release some weight off the handycapped P cars.
Nick F40 Posted May 28, 2008 Author Posted May 28, 2008 well, I know, uhh, I figured that would happen, yeah the V8 powered GXPR's are just dominating, a nice model would be cool, but against those ###### lizards and those Speedsources, STILL ROOTIN FOR YOU GUYS!, they probably are going to do something, but those Mazders are doing pretty good ###### GXP-R'S, ehhh, probably, ###### BANNER RACING! The GXP-R one sounds better. http://theracesite.com/index.cfm?template=...mp;mag_id=13639
CAL Posted May 28, 2008 Posted May 28, 2008 Every one pretty much knew it was going to happen, it’s Pontiac’s track. The Porsche teams were really squawking. Especially when the fastest Pontiac pits early and still almost puts the fastest Porsche a lap down. It’s not too much of a contest between a 6.0 Liter V8 and a 3.6 Liter flat six in virtually the same weight car. The Porsches just don’t have that big V8 torque to get off the corners combined with the short straights they never had a chance. Unless their is a rule change Pontiac is already destined to win every race this year except Daytona. We will see what happens, there is proably some penalty coming down the pipe for Pontiac. Will it be enough, soon enough? If they keep going they will put the series out of business. I know they want to have the American cars on the top to generate interest, but it really discourages the teams that runs Porsche. GT already lost 30% of their entries from a year ago and the other teams are now saying why bother.
samdiego Posted May 28, 2008 Posted May 28, 2008 (edited) I was able to catch all five of the races Sunday and the Mars thing, I'm so exhausted! These are from the archives. The '49 and '50 are Dad's, the '72 is mine. I lost my stub from '73 years ago. Edited May 28, 2008 by samdiego

samdiego Posted May 28, 2008 Posted May 28, 2008 They had two hours of "live" (actually a 3 hour delay) coverage of the Mars-Phoenix landing on the red planet.
