It is excellent paint but expensive. Last time i bought some was NNL East 3 years ago at $6.00 a can. The candy colors are especially nice.

Is it a thin primer?

$12.00 per can? That's outrageous!

Walmart's primer is thin and costs about a buck a can. A lot of folks (myself included) use it.

BTD, are you using Color Place or Home Shades? Out of the can or airbrush? Any barrier coats between the primer and the plastic? Is it compatible with other paints like MM or Tamiya lacquer? I use lacquers for the bodies of my cars. I love the nice thin coats that Tamiya primers put down but it is no cheap, even at Hobby Lobby with a 40% off coupon. Certainly not $1/can.

I've read both good and bad about the Walmart primer.  Some have said it is just white or gray paint but others swear by it.  I use Tamiya Fine Surface primer but have been looking for another primer to try.  The Black Gold is $12 a can for 12 ounces but the Tamiya is between $9 and $11 a can for 6 ounces.  The Black Gold isn't $1 a can but it's still cheaper than the Tamiya by almost half.

I was just wondering if anyone used the Black Gold spray can grey primer and if it's a thin primer.

Color Place and Home Shades are the same thing. At least the gray primer was, right down to SKU number. I ran my own tests and they were the same thing (color, smell, coverage, anything I could think of). Sadly my WM no longer has the Home Shades (or Color Place) gray but they do still have the Color Place black and white. No barrier needed between them and plastic. Perfectly compatible with MM and Tamiya lacquers and they've even stood up to some "real car" paints I've used but I haven't tried everything. VERY thin and smooth coverage and the white covers amazingly well. I even used two just-barely-wet coats of the white over RED plastic with absolutely no "bleed through." WONDERFUL stuff and I'm hoping the gray will come back someday. Till it does I'll make do with the white and black.

Snake, I had to get Homeshades gray primer online by the ship to store option. You will have to create a walmart account. I paid online and walmart emailed me when I could pick up the primer.

Not cash and carry as in the past, but better than not having the primer at all.

Homeshades gray primer is out of stock on the Walmart website.  This is as of March 18th. Hopefully they will re-stock soon. I bought three cans so I'm good for now.

I second your opinions and results on the gray primer as well.

Thanks, Snake! Just what I needed to know. You da man! Getting some tomorrow.

PS Are you airbrushing it?

Hells no. Just squirting it right out of the can.

You can smooth it nicely with #800 Wetordry if you really want to, but it lays out so smooth I almost never do. Now I always have to sand the popular Plastikote 235, but not the Walmart stuff.

Well, that sounds easy!

I use Tamiya primers for all my work these past few years.

Me too, but the price!

Use your 40% off coupon at your local Hobby LOBBY and get your Tamiya primers from them.

I too love the results of Tamiya primer. Super stuff. Used a coupon every time but still, the price. With tax in Tennessee (sales tax capital of the world) it's still over $7 for a 5.4 oz. can. Bought 2 cans of Walmart primer this morning, 1 black and 1 white for just over $2 and that's for two 10 oz. cans. For that price, I've got to give it a try.

I can't wait to hear if you like it as much as I do. BTW, I just tried the Black myself for the first time a couple weeks ago. So far, I like it. It's more like a very VERY dark gray, like the old Pactra Hot Rod Primer. I think I'll be using it on some tire treads, if nothing else.

Sounds like the black would be a good color on a rat rod. I'll post my opinions after a test or two.
