Olderisbetter Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 I am looking or a way to make 40's-50's style fog lights from scratch. Outside of resin casting, has anyone done this? I need to make several sets, so scrounging through old stash isn't viable. Lenses aren't a problem. The housing is what I need. I was thinking maybe something in jewelry making might work. 1/24-1/25 scale. Any ideas? Thanks
disabled modeler Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 You might be able to use the head off Spot lights like police cars have..???
Olderisbetter Posted April 2, 2017 Author Posted April 2, 2017 thanks, i have done that once, but i need my spotlights too...lol.

Ace-Garageguy Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 Just a thought...this old AMT parts-pack has four, 7" headlamp buckets in it, 2 of which are the tri-bar style. No lenses, and they are often available pretty cheap. You can use the ends of Bic-style pen caps for the rear section...
talon63 Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 Are you trying to replicate something like these? http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/uploads/monthly_2017_03/SAM_0863.thumb.JPG.8b2cab5fe3a0df0760d3225421cdc47d.JPG I think these are from a Lindberg `34 Ford Roadster Pickup (most likely candidate for where these came from since I used the Bic cap trick to make custom, elongated headlamp buckets for my build of that one). Buckets from the Revell `29 Ford should work as well if you are wanting something to make molds from.
Olderisbetter Posted April 3, 2017 Author Posted April 3, 2017 This is the style I'm trying to make.https://picclick.com/VINTAGE-1940s-50s-STUDEBAKER-UNITY-4-FOG-LIGHTS-302265292037.html
fiatboy Posted April 3, 2017 Posted April 3, 2017 I do not know if anyone has tried the "Lost Wax" kind of metal casting. It involves carving out of special dental wax, not regular wax, your pattern. Then you make your mold around the wax piece. Then you pour in the molten 'metal' and the wax vaporizes. You can probably find a book on this in the library. Otherwise go to "Alibris used books".
gtx6970 Posted April 4, 2017 Posted April 4, 2017 I have a few of the old ones from old annuals you can have

Olderisbetter Posted April 6, 2017 Author Posted April 6, 2017 GTX6970, Bill. I can't refuse an offer like that. I'm in Thailand, but have an American shipping address. I'll send you message directly. Thank you.
Olderisbetter Posted April 6, 2017 Author Posted April 6, 2017 Chris, That's what I'm looking for I think. Will search ebay shortly. Thx to everyone for the positive ideas.
Olderisbetter Posted May 10, 2017 Author Posted May 10, 2017 @ChrisBcritter: I ordered some of these and they work perfectly. I drilled a .040 hole and I soldered paperclip wire for a bracket. Painted the inside of a small headlight lens with amber fingernail polish. Glued small size headlight lens in place using clear 5 min epoxy. looks great. Thanks.
