Casey Posted October 26, 2017 Posted October 26, 2017 I had zero desire to go the wood look route with this boat and an AMT '57 Chevy Bel Air Hardtop body on hand, so I started measuring, marking, and then cutting. The width of the roof at the C-pillars was barely narrower than the boat's deck width in that area, but it fit. I probably should've taken a wedge slice out of the roof to narrow it a bit at the rear, but chose to preserve the stock rear window opening and trim instead. A 409 Chevy V8 will power the boat, but will be mostly hidden, so I'm going to keep it simple. I don't want to overdo the customizing, but still want to add some pieces/details to visually lengthen the boat a bit...we'll see what happens as things progress. Below is one (I'm assuming) vintage AMT customizing tail fin idea I set on the roof to see how it looks: I did also find two dash panels with gauges (or holes for gauges) and that funky custom steering wheel from some AMT kit we all have in our parts stash:
Mr. Metallic Posted October 26, 2017 Posted October 26, 2017 (edited) That's a cool concept, and cleanly executed. It can pass for one of those late 50's, early 60's sedan style runabouts. Just maybe add sliding glass on the sides and you're there. You may have to figure out a means of getting in and out, either by leaving the rear glass out and making the opening bigger by carving some of the roof away. Or you can do an opening hatch in the roof. Edited October 26, 2017 by Mr. Metallic
Mercuryman54 Posted October 27, 2017 Posted October 27, 2017 Casey, your boat is looking good. You could always go the whole 57 Chevy look with the fins also?. Dennis
Spex84 Posted November 1, 2017 Posted November 1, 2017 Great idea! I love it so far, and the fin suits the design well...gives it that boat-like feel without going over the top.
Renegade Posted November 1, 2017 Posted November 1, 2017 Great idea. Looks good so far. Will be watching this one.
vintagercr Posted December 31, 2017 Posted December 31, 2017 This is very cool. I look forward to seeing more progress shots.
