I have three tractors and no trailers. I mean built trailers. A while back I built a GMC B-7000 which some of you may remember.

This is a photo of the real thing. I'll try and build something like this , two axles, beaver tail and fixed, narrow gooseneck.

I had bought a pile of trailer parts on eBay. there is enough there to make this trailer.

Started by cutting off the gooseneck.

Then I narrowed it. I took off about the width of the king pin plate. Should I narrow it some more like about the width of the plate plus the side rails or is it good like this?

OK, I need help here. This is the AMT lowboy suspension. Is there any way I can cut this and make a two axle which would remain plausible? If not, I'm open to suggestions as to an alternative including resin items.

I know how I'd do it for a modern truck build but don't think for the era of what your building it would work.... Thinking, cutting the spring/center section out, bring them together add a knuckle in between so they pivot and add air bags on a center cross member in place of the spring...... Not sure if that would work for the era though!!??

I'm not familiar with that set up, but geometrically speaking, I think that if you remove the end with the extra bars and mount the end of the springs to the trailer frame, leaving the tip of that rear beam attached to the spring and fabricating some brackets to make it appear to pivot like the end of most springs, and I believe that it would represent one that would function. I'm not sure what the suspension would have been in that era on that trailer, but I'm pretty sure with your fabricating skills that you can pull something off with what you have.

I found a Ken Smith article on how to do just that, turn this lowboy into a tandem 25 tonner. It looks a lot like your suggestions Brian and Kerry. So I'll go with that.

Cut the suspension assembly according to the Ken Smith instructions which rendered it springless. Is that what they call "hardtail"? :P

Narrowed and reattached the gooseneck.

If you look at the 1:1 picture, there are D-rings and outriggers. Where can I get them? I thought Mr. Double Take made them but I don't see them listed. I knoe there are some in his detachable gooseneck lowboy. Maybe if I ask nicely....

I remember the trailer being pulled up to the fifth wheel with the winch. Made up a D-ring attachment for the front.

looking at the wood decking, I have some balsa which translates to 2X6. The "woodgrained" original plastic decking shows closer to 2X10. Which is more plausible?

Made up a well for the spare tire and a bracket to hold it.

Kj doesn't list the outrigger but can supply you with them, I just picked some up at recent show

The trailer is coming out fantastic

Here is his response:

Hi Pat,

Unfortunately I do not have molds for those parts anymore. I think Jamie over at Moluminum makes outriggers and D-rings though.

Don't use balsa wood!  It will dry out and warp over time. If you want to use real wood use basswood. It is a bit sturdier and will not warp.

If you want to use the kit plastic wood, I have a woodgraining tutorial I can email you. PM me your email addy if you want it.
