Billy Kingsley Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 Sorry Dan, I was in my room when I typed it and I'm still in my room I mean not a nationally known, well known or even good builder Maybe getting rid of that last one soon, eh?
Daniel Peterson Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 Another guy that I want to meet is Peterson just because he has a fixation for T-Bolts and so do I but just not as bad as he does And I'd like to cross paths with you some day...what with you actually knowing what it's like to build a T-Bolt and all.
Mr. Can Am Garage Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 Wait a minute...do you mean "id" as in the psychoanalytical sense, or the "id" I generally show the police? It's early and I'm not "to spec" on the caffeine yet. I'm thinking George means the type that you show to the police.
Mark Brown Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 Don Emmons and Hank Borger.....they got me started down this path 30 or 35 years ago. Mark
MrObsessive Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 Wow! I'm flattered to be mentioned by a number of you guys! I would love to meet Juha Airio someday.......he's been an inspiration over the years by some of the replica stock stuff he's built. I've personally known Larry Booth since he was once a member of the MAMA club.......when I joined MAMA in 1994, his '57 T-bird blew me AWAY!! That's what really got me going on the replica stock builds I do, as well as the working features. I got to meet Augie Hiscano several times over the years and we've had quite long conversations.................he will always be missed at the shows. I got a chance to meet some of the other Hobby Greats when I went to GSL last year................Mark Gustavson, Dave Lindsay, Chris Roldan, to name a few. I'd love to meet Jackie Cheyenne sometime, but lord knows when I'll get to the west coast. She's a very prolific builder despite her disability, and tackles some subjects (TKM anyone?) that can make us "Big Dogs" weep!
Zed Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 Here's a question for you guys, and gals: Who would you like to meet in the Model Car hobby, who is still around today? This question is geared to the "old timers" of the hobby, those who were around when the hobby was in it's youth, and the youth is what the hobby was all about. Not sure mine were around when the hobby was in it's youth... but as a kustom nut, i can't stop looking at a true kustom enthusiast's stuff ! In no particular order Bill Stillwagon, Steve Boutte and Rik Hoving ...man ...what a team !
DaveInTheHat Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 I'd like to meet Gerald Wingrove. There are a couple people on the Scale Auto forum that I'd like to meet Pat Covert, Chester Fesmire, Chuck Doan and a few others but I only know them by the names that they use to post on the forum.
Billy Kingsley Posted August 19, 2006 Posted August 19, 2006 I got to meet Augie Hiscano several times over the years and we've had quite long conversations.................he will always be missed at the shows. Boy, isn't that the truth, Bill. I will never forget the first time I met Augie, and what happened after that. It was 2003, and I was making my first trip to the NNL Nationals in Toledo. I was there with Rick Hanmore, Vince LoBosco, Greg Nichols and Jim Devine, who all knew Augie from past events and GSLs and whatnot. Augie had no clue who I was, and you guys know me...Even though I talk all the time on the board(s), in real life I usually just stand quietly by myself and try not to make waves. Well, Augie made sure to include me in the convorsation even though he was chatting with old friends and had never met me, nor even heard of me I'm sure. The next day at the NNL itself (the first meeting happened in the parking lot of Applebee's off Dussel Drive on Friday night BTW) he made me a exhaust tip, just specifically for me. I've kept it in a special box just waiting for my skills to sufficiently improve to not waste it on a build. I have alot of nice stuff, but that is my prized possion. But that's not all. Come the 2004 NNL Nationals, I'm back at the show and meet Augie. I didn't have my usual 3 Nametags on at the time, and he remembered my name! A year passed and he remembered my name. It's not unusal for people to remember my face (I have a unique look) but to remember my name after not seeing or talking to me in a year...That was unbelieveable to me. That is something (and Augie was someone) who I will never forget, even though I only met him on 3 seperate days.
Darin Bastedo Posted August 19, 2006 Posted August 19, 2006 Sorry Dan, I was in my room when I typed it and I'm still in my room I mean not a nationally known, well known or even good builder Maybe getting rid of that last one soon, eh? What do you mean not nationally known? didn't I just see one of your models featured in an ad for a major model company in an internationally distributed magazine? You do realise people who see that don't realise you are just a regular guy who puts his pants on one leg at a time. I bet somewhere there is a guy saying, "I wish I could build well enought to be featured in a model company ad like Billy Kingsly" There are no nobodies in the hobby, and most of the "sombodies" dont know they are one yet. Think about it, all the movers and the shakers in the model world know who you are. That makes you "nationally known"
Billy Kingsley Posted August 19, 2006 Posted August 19, 2006 Wow Darin, I never thought it like that before! I guess with that there, a past letter in MCM and a letter and a Car in "The Other one" I guess I would be known now... But, I was more talking about when I first joined the model car community back in 2000 at the age of 15 I havn't been called normal in a long time...I'm not sure what feels wierder here, being called normal or nationally known
Darin Bastedo Posted August 19, 2006 Posted August 19, 2006 Let's see, who would I like to meet? Hmmm other than just about all of the friends i've made over the forums, who I haven't met face to face... in no particular order... 1. Mark Gustavson...I'm sure he and I could have long dicussions about customs and their styling. we wouldn't always agree, but I bet we could find a lot of common ground. 2. Dan "The Class Clown" Peterson man I bet we could have a laugh or two. Ironicly we've been in the same town on the same day several times and I never knew it until later. 3. Bill Geary. I would just like to sit him down and pick his brain, plus with the long conversations we have on the phone, I know we could talk for hours. 4. Billy Kingsley. If anything his pure enthusiasm has to be contagious, and it would give me an excuse to take a vacation in lake george. 5. Tim Boyd. His skill and his knowledge of model car history would make for great conversation. 6. Bruce owen. If I could combine the technical prowess of Bruce, the styling of steve boutte, and the detailing ability of Bill geary I could create the perfect modeler....lol
Billy Kingsley Posted August 19, 2006 Posted August 19, 2006 Darin, I can honestly say I never expected to be on anybody's list! If you come to the NNL East, you'll get two on your list...Me and Bill. Bruce Owen was there either this year, last year or both but I didn't get to meet him. Saw the Virtue RSX though. IMO looks better in person then print. I forgot somebody who I always wanted to meet but finally did...Ted "Chopper" Lear. Always enjoyed his work in MCM and then ended up literally running into him in Toledo last year...
Mr. Metallic Posted August 20, 2006 Posted August 20, 2006 I've been fortunate enough to meet many of the greats of the hobby, especially when I lived in NY. But here are a few people I'd love to meet, just for the wealth of knowledge they seem to posess about the hobby. Also, this post is not to impune anyone else not mentioned. I'm glad to MEET anyone from this hobby. Whether I want to talk to some of them again, that may be another story. :? Mark Budnewski John Mueller Art Anderson Jairus Watson
Tuffy's Garage Posted August 20, 2006 Posted August 20, 2006 Meeting Chopper for Billy was cool I was there and introduced them. Billys eyes were like saucers, it was really cool to see. And Chop was just as cool as a cucumber. That was a good day
FASTBACK340 Posted August 22, 2006 Posted August 22, 2006 I not only met Augie, but had a 1-on-1 lesson on his lathe at Toledo back in 2003! And like Billy, I have that little chunk `o brass stashed away. He would explain everything in detail. Augie was a class act. Dale King would be another name from a few years back, along with Harry Stewart whom built some mind-boggling stuff. I remember his Comet with the electric motor INSIDE the model motor that ran and had fully operational throttle linkage from the pedal to the 4 Weber carbs. Incredible..... I've already had the pleasure of meeting some fabulous people so far, including many names mentioned already, including Jungle Pam. Matter of fact, I've even met Peterson.
Mad Slammer Posted August 22, 2006 Posted August 22, 2006 I would really like to meet everyone but, I think I've been very lucky so far. . . I met Auguie Hiscano and Mark Gustavson on my first trip to a model show in the US. I also met Ted Lear on that same trip. . . The Show?. . . The first Scenic City Classic back in 2000. The next time I met with Auguie was almost 4 years later in Birmingham, and he remembered my Name! ! ! He really was a Great Man. I'm sure he's watching us from Model car heaven. . .
cruz Posted September 2, 2006 Posted September 2, 2006 Well guys, as for me when I was living in Puerto Rico from 91 to 96 I decided to get back in the hobby and started to collect my modelling magazines to use as reference and to get back into this hobby that I love so much. By 96 I decided to move to Maryland and never thought that by joining the MAMA club I would meet so much talent not including the Central PA club that I am also a member of. I had read all about these guys before I met them but to make my story short here is just a list of the great people and friends that I have met: Bill Geary, Larry Booth, Lyle Willits, the great Norm Veber, Dan Peterson, Terry Adams, Ron Hamilton, another idol of mine Harold Bradford, what a talent, Jeff Sauber, wow, and many others and what's great about this is that they are all in my club for me to enjoy and make fun of I am sorry that Larry Booth moved to Texas but I still see him at the shows often. I still would like to meet other people like Juha Airo and the mini "Foose" Jairius but I can say that I am very happy with the people that I have met over the last couple of years. I have more names but they know who they are.....
Schumacher330 Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 I want to meet everyone here and on Randy's board. I would love to hang out with Monoped, Pat Redmond, Mal, Hadley, Andy (only if I had bond money with me ) and all the other on Brian's chat. One guys work I admire and haven't seen listed yet is Clay Kemp. His builds inspire me greatly.
