NICE!!, did you post it yet??!!!

If you look under the Contest Section and go to the Heartland Show. There are some pictures and the 510 happens to be one of them. They also show an orange '56 Chevy Delivery I had entered  along with my Orange Mt. and Tan Suburban that got third in class.  I think my Purple Magnum Wagon is in the background in one shot. This will give you an idea of how the 510 turned out. The decals were the biggest problem and they never would lay down 100 % no mater how much Solvaset I used.

Do you remember how much you paid for yours?!,  if you find an unstarted one for sale, they usually start around $430....even the partially built ones can cost around $120. ALL klear parts should be sealed by themselves!!…..I was very fortunate that the windows in my kit were not damaged at all.

I'll be watching with interest: I've also done the Doyusha one, but it's a different beast -- no engine and the sides are not curved enough, really. And I have an unstarted Airfix one which I WILL build... which cost me the princely sum of £7 in a local charity shop a few years ago. Needless to say, I was in a big hurry to hand over my money!

best,

M.

Thanks, Matt!, and I keep thinking that my $250 was a great deal...You'd be mental NOT getting it!!!

I've never heard that, Marty, but what I read, is that Aston Martin gave them two DB-5's.

I just checked Dave Worrall's book "The Most Famous Car in the World," about the 007 Astons.  Things sure were different back in 1963. Aston wouldn't "give" EON Productions anything.  Though they responded a little better than Bentley, who just turned the film-makers down flat.

When producer Harry Saltzman first approached Aston, he was told that Aston-Martin was not in the business of giving away cars. But they'd be happy to sell him a DB-5 at full price, about US $4,500.  Saltzman blew his stack and told them they were giving up uncountable amounts of free publicity, since all the Bond movies had been big hits so far.

Aston at the time was (as usual) in financial trouble.  Their general manager telegraphed David Brown, who was  traveling in the USA, about the movie deal.  Aston finally agreed to loan EON Productions their test mule - a prototype DB-5 from the Research & Development Dept. Saltzman & company then spent nearly $25K adding all the Bond modifications.

Saltzman wasn't about to risk that expensive modified version for all the movie shooting...especially that chase scene with the Mustang convertible.  So Aston loaned them a second DB-5 for use as a "stand-in."  It had none of the mods, but did have a dummy housing made up for the front license plate. (It didn't rotate.)

One interesting technical note:  the modified Bond car had a 4-speed David Brown gearbox, like all DB-5s up to production number 1339.  All DB-5s after that, including the second 007 car, had a German ZF 5-speed transmission.  That came about because of a Brown trade deal involving the sale of his tractors in Europe.

Even more amazing is what Aston-Martin did with the original modified Bond car, that prototype DB-5, registration BMT16A. It was only a loaner, so when all the hoopla died down, it went back to Aston-Martin, along with the stand-in and 2 other silver DB-5s used to promote "Goldfinger."

Aston-Martin's workshop removed all the Bond modifications, which apparently involved welding in a whole new roof section to get rid of the ejector-seat roof.  In August 1968 Aston re-painted and sold it, just like any other used car.

Okay, all of you who have been patiently waiting......I have officially begun the build!!

Here are photos of all the things that I was able to pre-assemble, as well as the rough-fit of the bonnet, roof, and boot. as you notice, next step will be filling, and tweaking things.

Looking forward to this one Dann. Such a beautiful car! Been eyeing a Doyusha DB-5 on ebay forever myself but I just can't justify dropping almost $100 for a curbside kit.

Looking forward to your build!  This kit has tons of potential and is definitely the only game in town for accuracy of overall shape. The Doyusha and Aurora kits are worthless by comparison.

Well, it depends what you want to build. The Monogram 1/24 DB4 is not at all bad, if you want to build a DB4, or a DB4GT. If you happen to have easy access to a later Airfix "DB5" (the Doyusha kit in another box, and not SO hard to find or expensive) then you can  use the front end for a late DB4 and GT (with faired headlights) on the Monogram base kit. The Airfix "DB6" isn't, because they didn't deal with the roofline and the extra length properly. It's do-able, though, with good scale plans to see what you really need to fix (basically free up and lever higher the rear g;asshouse slope, while inserting an extension at the back by making a Z-cut and sliding the Kamm tail backwards then back-filling.

Someone (me, if wishes were horses) could fairly easily tool up a state of the art 1/24 early DB4 through to late DB6 with the help of some clever swappable slide-mold elements...

@djflyer is your man if you want info straight from the horse's mouth, since he has the kits to hand...

best,

M.

Good luck on this one. I boogered up one of those as a kid when it was new. The only Aston Martin I have is the Monogram DB4, which is alright with me. I had a Doyusha kit with the figures, ands got a king's ransom for it when I sold it. I can't wait!

Thanks, Jason! If you're looking for stock version of the Doyusha to turn it into the Bond car, the price of the actual Goldfinger kit is usually within $20 of each other, I've built them both, and they are VERY nice!!

Thanks!, this one is the best, but it has two flaws...one is pretty bad, and the other is just, "Why?".  With all the details, and working parts, why the heck didn't they make the center column??!!, and the very bad flaw; there is 0 door panel detail!!!!!....they are as smooth as glass. I've also built the Doyusha Goldfinger kit, and other than not having an engine, and the wrong curve to the rockers, it is an AWESOME kit!!!

I have some new updates on this one finally! I've been doing a lot of the rough work, and its getting there.

-Photo 1; Here I made the glove box door with hinge, and insert,  and according to photos, there is suppose to be a trim piece across the lower edge of the dash, so I added it.

-Photo 2; The glove box all assembled, and in place under the dash handle I made.

-Photo 3; I scratchbuilt the three dash vents. the oly thing left to do ,is to fold the sides down when their dry.

-Photo 5; Here is the kits steering wheel. I had to cut an 1/8 0f an inch off the end.....it was two long.

-Photo 6; I needed to make a realistic steering column, and turn signal switch.

-Photo 7; Getting ready to get rid of that second plain door card, and about to remove the rear seat hump....it doesn't look very real either...

-Photo 8; In order to start making the rear seat more realistically cushioned, I removed the hump, and will round-off the opening, then add a piece of styrene tube to help creat a better look.

-Photo 9; Here you can see its already starting to look better, but I have a lot more to do yet.
