evilone Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 i tried posting in my earthquake thread and i couldnt whats up? what did i miss? who did it? and why?
Harry P. Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 It's been shut down because there were quite a few complaints about all the political posts. Maybe it'll be back some time in the future, maybe not. But for now, it's history.
Brendan Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 Gregg had a lot of complaints about off topic posts. http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=13418
evilone Posted July 31, 2008 Author Posted July 31, 2008 ###### that sucks hopefully im not to blame for any of this stuff
Harry P. Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 A lot of us posted political stuff there...it's not any one person's fault. Things just got a liitle too far away from models and too heavy into politics and/or religion. Those are two topics that you can bet will always be trouble!
evilone Posted July 31, 2008 Author Posted July 31, 2008 true that bro hopefully it gits back up soon i dont want to post another earthquake rave in here
Jairus Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 We were merged into the slow lane of mediocrity by the moderator due to the complaints of a few vanilla modelers on this forum of you must know….. But that is just my humble opinion. Now, go build something....
Billy Kingsley Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 Bummer, that's one of the few sections I always checked on every single visit. (General, NASCAR, Rants & Raves and Resin are the ones I check every time, the others only periodically!) I just skipped over the polical and I didn't even SEE any religious posts. I don't get here all that often when I am not building though.
Blue coyote Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 Well, since the Rant & Rave section was the FIRST place I'd go to read a bit of fun from the modelling crew (and where most of my "subscribed threads" links led, which would then lead me to the rest of the forum...), this will be the second modelling forum I give up on due to people who can't do as Bill and I have been doing all along. Those who just can't resist the urge to read posts they KNOW will upset them should have their own keyboards locked, not whine that they are being "forced" to look at posts they don't like. But that's just the opinion of an amateur modeller with a few other interests, so ignore it at will. Have fun...
george 53 Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 Duhhhhh, Hey guys , it's no reason to leave, after all, it STILL is a model car forum. The Man in charge probly just got tired of beein hasseled cuz some folks wouldn't take the hint and keep it model related. Whats politics an religion got to do with ANYTHING we do here? Unless someone wants to build the Pope Mobile or somethin. Seems like some guys PURPOSELY started threads to start ######! I for one am glad the political B/S is gone. I din't see ANYTHING about religion till that helo guy popped up. But I thought THAT ###### WAS uncalled for. Just my humble opinion.
Ron L Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 Never read it, never cared. When I want my off topic fix I go read the fark.com forums. If you came here for something other than models and the loss of that upsets you, well that's your problem. Since we're sharing what we like to do on this site, all I do is read General and once in a while dab into the Workbench section. I don't read any other section - there's just too many. Hmm.. Post-apocalyptic future Pope mobile project...
Frank Steffens Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 I was drinking in a bar in Hell's Kitchen in NYC when I was in my early twenties. A guy wanders in, sits down, orders his drink and begins talking about Mayor Dinkins. The bartender gives him his drink and tells him "This one is on the house. Finish it and be on your way." When the guy asked the bartender why he had to leave, the bartender told him "Hell's Kitchen Rules: No Politics. No Religion. People are here to relax and have a good time, you can't do either discussing those two topics." Good call Gregg.

Are we all modellers (and ONLY modellers) or are we all people (with real, honest to Dog opinions) who happen to build models? And was the "boss" was getting hassled by people posting "off topic" or was he being hassled by people that had some kind of difficulty NOT opening threads they figured might be off topic? The bar analogy is a bit lame. Nobody here was forcing anyone to read ANY thread they didn't want to, were they? I won't bother arguing the call that was made, but once the topic reply notifications run out, I won't be back much, if ever. You see, if "I" don't like something, I'll avoid it instead of whining to get someone else to avoid it for me. Later,
Guest Gramps-xrds Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 (edited) It seems to me that if there are ppl who want to talk about politics or religion, then there are a lot of sites out on the net where this can be done. Go there and get you brains kicked out by ppl who really know what their talkin about. I have opinions on both subjects, but they're my opinions and I don't need someone tryin to inflict their beliefs or tryin to change my opinion. 99% of those of you who are bitchin about this don't have a clue on either subject. so take it someplace that really cares. Harold Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 I have to agree that those who know something will get them riled up and read it just to get riled up and whine about what they read are the root cause of Gregg's decision. Really, I didn't agree with a some of what was being posted, but I'm an adult and figure everybody is entitled to their own opinion. It's not like talk radio where one person is beating everyone over the head that doesn't agree with him. If I don't like what I'm reading, I'll pass over it and get on with my day. I'm sure I said a few things that people didn't like, and if I offended anyone, they should have e-mailed me directly instead of making Gregg's life miserable. Rants was our marketplace of ideas, a town square where we could all join in and add our two cents and talk about things that concern us all.

Taking the internet a bit seriously, are we? As Harold points out, the Rant & Rave section is/was a kind of town square, where members can/could discuss things among those who may have different opinions, while still enjoying the common bond of model building. Nobody (at least to my knowledge) has EVER forced a member here to open a thread they didn't want to open, so the ONLY one trying to inflict their belief on you....is YOU. While my own opinions differ greatly from some of those expressed by others in some of the posted threads, I don't judge anyone's modelling skill by their politics or religious beliefs. I guess I should just unsubcribe from this thread, though, before I feel the need to get all offended and make Gregg's life miserable by whining about what somebody else is "forcing" me to read...
Clay Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 Way to go Kevin, you started another war... Joking Now lets all just put it behind us, this is a model car site, so start building something.
george 53 Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 Hear,Hear, I second that motion!(Even third it!)
MrObsessive Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 I gotta admit, I won't miss it as I usually skipped over it if it wasn't model related. I might have made a comment or two on the political stuff, but as it dragged on, I wouldn't even open the section. Nevertheless, a lot of the recent threads seemed to have been started by the same individual, and that individual seems to have gone POOF since the section was given the kibosh. Which tells me they were more focused on starting political/religious fights than about the subject of model cars. Now as far as getting back to building------I've got a contentious drivers door to get back to fight with on the '55 Ford-----it refuses to hinge properly for some reason..............

larrygre Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 My friends, Gregg made the right call. There are literally hundreds of Internet chat forums where one can engange in pissing contests of all sorts, politics and religion included. We have precious few dedicated to the love of the model car hobby. 'Nuff said.

Sounds a bit like you're whining to me. Like you have said, don't read this if you have to try and answer by infering you should just unsubscribe. If you want to unsubscribe, Then that's your business. As for the rants section. I never read it and thought it was sorta childish and had nothing to do w/ models anyway.
Harry P. Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 I may be in the minority here, but I liked the R&R section. I learned a lot about the personalities of many of you who posted there. It gave me a more well-rounded picture of some of you guys, not just the "model building" side, and in that regard I think it actually made our little "family" here more interesting. And as for those who were offended by the political posts there, I have one simple question: Why did you go there and read them???? Seems to me that if I was the sort who was offended by political posts, I simply wouldn't go to the section where I KNOW they are and read them! Since the "offensive" posts were limited to a specifically defined area, I really see no reason why anyone who found that sort of thing offensive should go there on purpose just to be "offended"! Having said all that, however, I want to add that even though I liked the R&R section, I fully support Gregg's decision. The bottom line is, there are plenty of places online where political posts are more appropriate, and even sought out. If the removal of the R&R section makes this place a better modeling forum for those members who were offended by its presence, or thought it was inappropriate, then I'm all for the decision to remove it.
