89AKurt Posted August 11, 2018 Posted August 11, 2018 I got an IMC kit of the Ford GTP J-car from an estate. It was started by the previous owner, so it's no longer a collectible kit. I'm warming up to it, like I have adopted a mutt that is too cute. The instructions have ZERO reference for colors, and the parts aren't even numbered which cracks me up, but I can figure that out. So I wonder if any Ford race car experts can tell me the colors of: 1. Engine/transmission (box art shows what looks like gold) 2. Brake calipers (gold?) 3. Exhaust pipes (green, really?) 4. Interior seats and door panels (black) 5. Chassis tub (I'm guessing bare aluminum) 6. Steering wheel (wood rim?) 7. Shocks (chrome parts, the inside tube part) Far as I can tell, this is a prototype version, has added on scoops on the sides, the front does not have the pointy projections like the Hot Wheels car. I'm tempted to modify the headlights with clear lenses, and some openings with screens, but then it would not qualify for Box Stock at contests, so debating....
afx Posted August 12, 2018 Posted August 12, 2018 The J-car was a development of the GT-40 so the chassis finishes would be similar. Very sad history for this car. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_GT40
vamach1 Posted August 12, 2018 Posted August 12, 2018 The kit is like the Mark II's and IV's which we pretty advanced for that time but the bodies were less than accurate. Here's one I finished a few years ago from a partial kit and various parts from other kits. It is box stock and I think the decals were Freddy Cady. I have seen pictures of dark blue, blue and black for the hood depending on which version of the J car is depicted. I think this was the earlier version which color picture seem to be non-existent. The box art of course show Ford blue like most of the latter Jcar color pictures. LIke JC said I would use any J car pictures in color (or later Mark IV's) for deciding what colors to use. I did not stress out about 100% accuracy and just finishing the build was a relief.

I see you mounted the spare tire on the chassis, that makes more sense than the body. Interesting how obscure this model is, and that will be great for doing Box Stock, I'll never finish if I start detailing it. I'm also lucky the decals look good. Thank you for posting pictures, that really helps very much.

Thank you for posting pictures, that really helps very much. The glue bomb I bought on the cheap was missing about ten pieces so I had to have cast a few that were unique to this kit. Some other parts came from a Mark IV. You are lucky if your kit was complete. I'm not sure if I would pay more than $50 for an unbuilt one but I rarely see them for sale. The clear MPC version (which of course I painted) usually goes for $75 and up and is very different from the IMC. It of course shares a look parts in common with the MPC Mark IV which are easier to find. Edited August 14, 2018 by vamach1

To say I'm lucky is an understatement, it was part of a collection, because it was opened and the body painted, it was FREE! All parts included. I am stripping the paint with brake fluid now. The MPC kit looks more accurate. Makes me wonder if IMC guessed at the design, much like the first Stealth fighter jet kits. The radiators are in "normal" position, the nose below the headlights protrude out, carb has a box which is logical, spare mounted on the chassis, and the most obvious is the intakes instead of scoops. But the most glaring and very important detail missing, no Le Mans mandated suitcases!
89AKurt Posted August 17, 2018 Author Posted August 17, 2018 My best guess:1. Engine/transmission - Blue/matt aluminum2. Brake calipers - gold3. Exhaust pipes - steel4. Interior seats and door panels - black5. Chassis tub - bare aluminum everywhere but the interior is black6. Steering wheel - wood rim7. Shocks - whatever I feel like
89AKurt Posted August 20, 2018 Author Posted August 20, 2018 (edited) I started it! I'm possessed with finishing this. Edited August 20, 2018 by 89AKurt
vamach1 Posted August 20, 2018 Posted August 20, 2018 (edited) Good use of the Molotow pen. You were lucky to find a complete kit. Edited August 22, 2018 by vamach1
