Mike999 Posted July 3, 2019 Posted July 3, 2019 Figure this one out. eBay seller is offering a "Jo-Han #C-4660 1960 Desoto Adventurer, missing tires, no box." It seems to be missing a lot more than the tires. The only part of a Jo-Han Desoto kit in his photos is the instruction sheet. Everything else belongs to a '65 Mustang hardtop. Which looks like a die-cast model, with the opening dog-leg doors , flat firewall with hinge cutouts, etc. I have no idea who made the Mustang and the seller doesn't mention it. ERTL did a die-cast '65 Mustang coupe, but it didn't have separate door handles like this one. Just another eBay mystery, I guess... https://www.ebay.com/itm/JoHan-60-Desoto-Adventurer-Hardtop-C-4460-Model-Car-MISSING-TIRES-/113805836113?hash=item1a7f5b3f51%3Ag
SfanGoch Posted July 3, 2019 Posted July 3, 2019 The listing was pulled. Somebody must've contacted the seller about the same discrepancies you noted. The seller's ebay moniker is "fordnut88" which probably explains the Mustang parts. Or, maybe not.
StevenGuthmiller Posted July 3, 2019 Posted July 3, 2019 The link you provided now takes you to a mint, in box Johan '60 Desoto kit. I've seen this happen before. It's probably nothing more than a case of the seller mixing up some of his items that he has up for sale. Steve
SfanGoch Posted July 3, 2019 Posted July 3, 2019 Different sellers. The mint kit is from Model Car Swap Meet. The original one in question was offered by fordnut88.

Many times when a auction has ended or is taken down for whatever reason, the original link will take you to an entirely different auction within the general scope of the original one. But that said, I have seen mistakes like this one where the seller will later correct the mistake and put the corrected auction up at a later time. Steve Edited July 4, 2019 by StevenGuthmiller

Many times? Um, it is more like every time. They are so helpful in trying to get you to buy something. Then you have to find a tiny unconspicouls link "See original Listing".
Tom Geiger Posted July 4, 2019 Posted July 4, 2019 No weirdness... pretty self evident from the huge banner at the top of the page! Now if I could get $119 for my Desoto I'd be selling!
MrObsessive Posted July 4, 2019 Posted July 4, 2019 The Mustang kit that was on there originally was the AMT 1/16 scale one. I can spot those awkward angled A pillars in a millisecond. How the mix-up with the '60 Desoto instruction sheet I don't know, but that was weird. I have a builtup '60 DeSoto, but I got it for nowhere near $119! Better deals can be found for this kit if one looks (and waits) long enough.

(I posted this pic elsewhere, but the board moves so fast it's easy to miss things. At least it is for me, but I'm old.) The pair appear to have been built by an adult back in the day. No glue blobs and the painting is carefully done, even the trim and nameplates. Look closely at the Desoto, and you can see its missing hubcap in the back seat. Got both of them for quite a bit less than $119.
MrObsessive Posted July 6, 2019 Posted July 6, 2019 Both of those are very clean for their ages........especially that '60 Plymouth! Yard sale huh? I pass those from time to time around here and it wouldn't hurt to stop and check those out. You never know what you might find!

At the same sale, I found the stack o' kits shown below for reasonable prices. I can go to that flea market for weeks and find nothing, then several different sellers will show up with old kits. All these are unbuilt except the "Daisy" Road Runner, which has some minor assembly of the engine/interior. The seller with the DeSoto and Plymouth also had a bunch of old promos: some Banthrico Pontiacs, a very rare Cruver '49 Olds 4-door, bullet-nose Studebaker and a '53 Stude 2-door coupe with the window post. All of those were warped pretty badly, missing parts, etc. That white spot on the roof of the '60 Plymouth is a crack, but not a very bad one and it should be fixable. But you're right, yard sales can also be a great source of old models. When I'm driving by those, it's amazing how much a stack of board games can look like a stack of kits. G-r-r-r...

Oh OK.............anyone familiar with the Central PA area has probably heard of the Farm Show arena and there's been a flea market held there about this time of the year I believe on Sundays through the Fall. Another place just down the road from me in Middletown has a TREMENDOUS flea market called "Saturday's Market" which used to have a fellow that sold all kinds of oddball kits you just don't see any longer. Unfortunately, he passed away a number of years ago and his son took over, but that soon folded and I can't remember the last time I've seen models there, although it's been awhile since I've been through there.
