What's good all, working with my daughter on an AMT 34 Ford Pick Up.  This will be built pretty much box stock, may change a minor thing or two but she is having fun with it so far.  Been cleaning and prepping the body, bed and other parts for paint, nothing crazy just working with her on scribing and some light sanding around edges, seams and flash areas.  She decided to go with HOK Passion Purple on this build, we have the base on now and will give it a look over before clearing it, here is where we are so far:

Cool. Looks like she's got the painting thing down pretty good already. Glad to see you have her using a decent respirator, too.

Funny...that's exactly how I paint model parts...one hand gloved, holding the part taped to a stir stick, outside. Works great.   :D

Yes, the respirator is a must, I think when I learned from my pops he would have me wear them when he was home but when I was painting stuff after school a lot of times I would pass until some wind caught a good cloud of clear and brought it back to me, after that I was pretty much always using them.  She is doing well, learning stages and she scared me with the clear but I think we are OK!  We will post some pics after the clear is on everything.

Thank you for the comment, I'm glad she enjoys the hobby!

Here we are with some clear, we used some Matrix, worked out nice, she scared me a time or two and I see a few things but overall she did a great job, she has sprayed bases but not too much clear.  Here are some pics of what we got!

Hi!

Superb execution!

I have to ask: are you related to the Mattox Gentleman who had a tangerine 62 TBird on the cover of a well known magazine. If so... great painting skills run in the family, obviously!

Your daughter paints better than a lot of people I see who’ve been doing it years!  Nice work!  Color really pops too!

Thank you, she is very fortunate to have access to a lot of good equipment and materials as I was when I learned.  My father is a car painter by trade and I started learning to paint with full size guns when I was 11 or so.  I've had my daughter do some basic spraying on flat sheet metal and some other models for practice, get the motion down, that is a lot of it, motion, distance etc.

Yes sir, George is my father.  Thank you for the kind compliment, as I had just responded to another here, I was very fortunate to grow up with a great teacher along with friends of his that helped me as well.  Also have the equipment and materials makes a ton of difference.  I was spraying urethane candy paints on my own by 12-13 years of age, surprised pops even back then lol!

You’re a great dad for teaching her a skill - and she’s doing great at it!  You must be very proud!

Can't tell you how happy and proud I am that she enjoys the hobby, she has been going with my pops and me to NNL's since she was about 4-5, same for car shows etc.  She has been sparking that fire for me to get on some old builds, I have some stuff that has been painted and foiled for about 20 years I'm going to look and finish up now!  Thank you again, I just tell her to have fun, there were a few things on the paint and clear but at the end of the day, it looks great and she had fun and learned a little more!

Ah-Ha! Now it definitely runs in the family! Great that you pass it on to your daughter. I was in custom painting on choppers, vans and customs since the 60's, and I LOVE HOK products... That passion pearl was a big hit in the 90's: couldn't stop shooting it! Here's just one old archive photo... Keep on!

Sir, this is world class quality! No surprise your family models found their way in magazines since so long. A good teacher, and good students. Bravo!

Thank you Claude, I appreciate the kind comments!  I was hoping Bell would have been back from her mothers by this afternoon as I had to do some spraying on some old projects I dug out to work on so that she could have done some spraying on her interior parts.

Hi Paul!

Don't forget that for a beginner, painting is one of the most demanding step, if only because time and patience are involved. Many steps, strict preparation, cleanliness, without saying that... anything could happen and mar the final result! Your daughter shows extraordinary dispositions, obviously. She'll settle into her own rythm, you'll see!

Keep modeling together, I envy you, since my daughters never showed any real interest in scale modeling!

All the best!

Thank you Claude, its a blast working on them with her, my son isn't as into the cars and stuff as she is, he will go look around but doesn't have much drive, figure if he comes around one day, it'll be there.  She is all excited about the NNL West coming up then we are looking to attend the West Koast Kustoms car show in May down in Santa Maria.  I'm working today but left her set up do clean up and get some work done on her 34, I tell her, don't rush, take you time.  The clean up and prep is so much of the outcome, when I was younger I just loved painting, seeing things come to life but often rushed the clean up process.  I have a few 49 Fords I actually pulled out that were started way back in 96 or so, was looking at the scribe work and other clean up..shaken my head lol.  I took now and started cleaning them up and now have two solid 49's to work with, enjoy that clean up now, makes all the difference!

Paul... Love seeing Bella getting more work done on this. She is doing a killer job and has a great mentor. Oh man do I remember back in the day you and spaying some clear with pearl on an extended cab Chevy pick up. I know we messed it up but we laughed the whole time about it. Look forward to progress on this build of her's.

Haha...yeah we had some good times messing with these models back in the day and here we are now putting out some decent builds!  She is having fun with it!  Bell and I were just talking about getting some bench time in tonight after dinner and homework.  She is enjoying the hobby for now, hopefully it sticks!

Hi Paul!

Hope all is well for you in California even with this lockdown caused by the virus...

I was reading an old issue of SAE with a cup of joe at noon, and I saw a mention of one of your winning models in a report about the NNL West! The isue was from circa 99, and the model was referred to (no picture, alas) as a 57 Chevy if I remember well.

Goes to show that your talent was already well recognized by your peers even at the turn of the century! Talk about lifelong dedication!

All the best to you and your loved ones!
