Husky1943 Posted July 14, 2020 Posted July 14, 2020 I am really excited to be working on this gorgeous land yacht! So, far, I bathed all the parts in soap and water and got the body primed and painted (chocolate brown). Currently sanding the finish to get that shine, and have put chrome on the hood. I really hope this one is going to turn out pretty, but with all the curves on the body, I will have some issues of continuity with the finish. Let me know what you think. And seriously, to me, it looks like it was carved out of a block of chocolate! Ciao for now
doorsovdoon Posted July 14, 2020 Posted July 14, 2020 It does look like chocolate, Lol! Common colour on cars this age. Brown does look good but it has to shine. A friend of mine painted his 1:1 car brown and thought what is he thinking, but when the trim and everything was fitted it looked amazing!
Husky1943 Posted July 14, 2020 Author Posted July 14, 2020 Thanks for the look, Gareth. (Don't tell anyone, but it is actually Ace Hardware-brand Gloss Brown for plastic lawn furniture). This is only my second turn on using the polishing kit, so hopefully it will turn out great. It just takes a LOT of patience to achieve it, especially how curvy this girl is.
doorsovdoon Posted July 14, 2020 Posted July 14, 2020 Plastic paint is good, it's pretty hard wearing stuff. I painted my 1961 Impala with a brand called Plasti kote, It laid down nicely and didn't even need any cutting or polishing.
cruiser66 Posted July 15, 2020 Posted July 15, 2020 Watch out around next easter, some kid might try to take a bite out of it. lol. looks good so far !!!
Husky1943 Posted July 15, 2020 Author Posted July 15, 2020 Gareth, that's a beautiful car and a beautiful finish. I would have thought that you used Tamiya paints with that type of finish.
Husky1943 Posted July 15, 2020 Author Posted July 15, 2020 Thanks Cruiser. I'm telling you it does look like a master Kinder egg! And I really like chocolate.
Shardik Posted July 15, 2020 Posted July 15, 2020 It's interesting that we both chose the same color for this car. It just looks right. I'm anxiously watching to see how the rest develops.

I was wanting kind of a sleeper hot rod look, so I chose something that I thought wasn't going to be too flashy, but in the end it wound up looking very classy in that color. Husky1943 Posted July 16, 2020 Author Posted July 16, 2020 Johann, I love your interpretation of a gorgeous vehicle. You are right! Brown just looks right on it.
Husky1943 Posted July 16, 2020 Author Posted July 16, 2020 An update. I had some time, so I finished polishing the body in its entirety. Yeah, there are some blemishs, but overall, I am pretty pleased how it came out. Definitely an improvement over the orange peel that I usually have with a paint finish. I did take the paint down to the primer in some places, but delicate touching up will take care of that. Anyway, I appreciate any thoughts or comments. Criticism is also welcome (just remember; twenty years of the USN taught me to be very sensitive while developing a very thin skin).?
Husky1943 Posted July 16, 2020 Author Posted July 16, 2020 Thanks David. My real truck isn't as well-waxed as this model is!
doorsovdoon Posted July 17, 2020 Posted July 17, 2020 Looking good, can't wait to see this with all the trim and everything!
Husky1943 Posted July 17, 2020 Author Posted July 17, 2020 Thanks Gareth. I realize I am light-years behind the talent around here (come on, I have seen your cars!) but Look Out! I'm catching up!
Husky1943 Posted July 19, 2020 Author Posted July 19, 2020 Happy Sunday, and got an update on this beauty.... Pretty much took me several (4+) hours to finish all the chrome, but I like the way that it turned out. I still think muffler tape is the way to go. Anyhoo, check it out and let me know what you think.
Modlbldr Posted July 20, 2020 Posted July 20, 2020 Very nice work on the paint polishing and the foil work. It is looking great! Later-

Cpt Tuttle Posted July 21, 2020 Posted July 21, 2020 We had a brown 1947 Plymouth when I was a kid, the memories of that one makes me appreciate brown colours on cars from this era.
doorsovdoon Posted July 21, 2020 Posted July 21, 2020 Nice work on the foiling. Can see it taking shape now.
Husky1943 Posted July 21, 2020 Author Posted July 21, 2020 Okay, just an update- Twisted up the plug wiring for both sides of the engine. wrapped them in tape. Installed them. Now, the engine is 70 percent plumbed. Still need to put the selanoid (how is it spelled?) on the port side of the manifold. Then the ancillary wiring (starter, generator, etc.) What do you think?
Husky1943 Posted July 21, 2020 Author Posted July 21, 2020 Just now remembered; the tape around the spark wiring is "shielding." Also (don't know if you can see or not), but I also installed heat-shielding on the block side of the manifolds. Hope you enjoy. (Off to look up the spelling of "selinoid" 'cellinoid' something)
