I know what you mean about the multi piece it.... I've been chopping up what was going to be a 67 camaro but am having 2nd thoughts. Seems either extremely technical or like a huge pain in the ass. I was thinking of deconstructing the whole front clip. ?.....? nope..... too silly for this old amt.....I'll just try new things one at a time.

Its great! I work in a machine shop and somehow this seems fitting.

If you want to use an alternative to felt... I am using dryer sheets.  They are thinner than felt but need to be painted.

There are several options that I use that haven't been mentioned. 

First is doll house carpet. It's similar to using felt but I think it looks better. It's available in a few colors at hobby lobby and many colors from on-line hobby stores.

Another option is one of the many textured spray paints that are available. There's a Rust-Oleum truck bed paint, duplicolor trunk paint, krylon makes textured craft paints, etc. Don't worry about the color. Just spray it on and then paint over it with the color you really want.

Since I've started using embossing powder, I have never looked back.

I have had nothing but good luck with it, and it can literally be applied in minutes with virtually no fuss, once you get used to it, with no special tools or preparation.

Steve, where do you source your embossing powders from and are you using a particular brand?I have silver and black that I use and if needed paint over but I’ve been trying to find other colors locally at various stores but pickings are slim.

I haven't needed to buy any for several years, but the set that I have been using was found on ebay some time ago for about $15.00.

The brand is "Hampton Art" and the set that I have are metallic colors.

 

They are available in different color sets from various distributors on ebay.

 

You can get them in "basic", "pastel" and "metallic" colors for around $20.00.

 

A set will last a very long time.

 

 

Basic.

 

 

 

 

Pastel.

 

 

 

 

Metallic.

I'm using the Hampton Art stuff, too. Fairly easy, and not dusty like flocking.

Steve your builds are incredibly clean! Very beautiful work. Thank you for sharing. I dont know why I havent tried actual embossing powder yet. Just never pulled the trigger on it.

I just picked up another set of the basic colors myself!

I needed some red for an upcoming project and the metallic set doesn't have bright red.

 

I should be set for embossing powder for a very long time!

For those who build old beaters, I'd like to chime in with a technique I picked up from Ken Hamilton.  To depict worn out carpeting (or carpeted floor mats), start with a piece of emery cloth and scrape off most of the abrasive, so that the cloth backing starts to show through.  I'll try to find a photo to illustrate the results - very convincing.
