AZPartsLocators Posted October 29, 2020 Posted October 29, 2020 My name is Jeff. I haven't messed much with building models since the late 1980s. Back then, a friend and I were in a club here in Phoenix. We were the younger ones in the group(high school) We used to enter in the World of Wheels model class. The models went by the wayside as life came along. Now that my kids are grown and I have a little more time. I have a classic Chevy and GMC trucks parts business so I have been starting to mess with some Chevy pickup models from the 1973 and newer area . Right now I haven't had the time to do any complete builds but have been doing some basic restores/repairs on vintage built ups.
Danno Posted October 29, 2020 Posted October 29, 2020 Welcome to the Forum, Jeff! There are two model cars exclusive clubs in the Valley now, Cactus Car Modelers and Moonlight Modelers, plus the Craig Hewitt Chapter of IPMS (all disciplines, including cars). You were probably once a member of Moonlight Modelers; it's been around more than 30 years. Cactus is the 'new guy' - only 14 years old! You are more than welcome to check out all three clubs, see if any or all of them are up your alley. If you are interested, let me know - - - we'll get you hooked up with the info you need. There are (usually) four model car contests in the Valley every year - 2020 has been different because of Covid-19. But, one of the four is coming up next month: Goodguys Southwest Nationals at Westworld in Scottsdale, November 20-21-22. We have a big model car (and pedal car) contest in conjunction with the huge 1:1 car show Goodguys puts on. Next March is the Goodguys Spring Nationals model car and pedal car contest, also at Westworld in Scottsdale, March 19-20-21, 2021. Next April is the Desert Scale Classic (17th Annual) Model Car Championship; Saturday, April 10, 2021. Stay tuned for details. And, usually the IPMS Chapter puts on an event in November that they call Modelzona - all types of models, including cars. However, due to Covid-19, this year's event was cancelled. It should be held again the first Saturday of November 2021. Point is . . . there's a lot of hobby activity and support in the Valley. Try it out! See what fits you. PS: You probably know Jim Hollister. A mutual friend! Welcome to the Valley's modeling scene, too! Danno ?
Russell C Posted October 30, 2020 Posted October 30, 2020 Welcome! No doubt you might be glad we're entering the time of year in this area where spray paint doesn't completely evaporate before hitting the model.
AZPartsLocators Posted October 30, 2020 Author Posted October 30, 2020 Thank you for the welcome guys. I still don't have a ton of time as the squarebody parts business keeps me pretty busy but I have more time than when I was raising my kids

The late 80s was a long time ago so I don't remember anybody but I am sure some would seem familiar. I know we used to go to a guys house over off Cavecreek and Union Hills. We were the young ones then and the extent of some of the guys collections was mind boggling considering it was before the internet where you could find almost anything. Back then it was some guys getting together with some drinks and snacks showing off what they were working on and exchanging some parts and kits. That is kind of what I am looking for again. So often, I have vintage kits missing this or that piece. While more often than not, they finally do show up on eBay it can take a long time or I have to buy a huge parts lot just to get one or two parts that I need. These days, modelling is just relaxing to me. It slows the world down and brings me back to the simpler times of my childhood

Misha Posted October 30, 2020 Posted October 30, 2020 As a Canuck living off the west coast on Vancouver Island, I’d like to welcome you as well. We also live in Scottsdale during the winters and have found Phoenix to be a great modelling community having gotten involved with the Cactus and Moon ? Light car clubs, great bunch of guys and gals. I have been made to feel at home and have been invited to judge at the DSC contest past couple of years. It was a stroke of genius to hold a virtual contest during the Covid Calamity this past spring and to take part as a participant. Hopefully the border will reopen in time for DSC 17 and all will be better. Cheers Misha PS Is the Show & Shine still happening at Indian Bend? It has always been a neat event held every Saturday with huge turnouts.
misterNNL Posted November 11, 2020 Posted November 11, 2020 Sounds like the forums will help you connect with like minded modelers in your area. Hope it proves to be very positive for you.
